39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
Great food, great server - personable and efficient. Thanks for another great meal.
This restaurant never disappoints. Food is very good, staff is excellent. One of our favorite restaurants.
My son always requests this restaurant for his birthday. Great food and always a great staff.
It was delicious! The service was great and my food was fantastic as usual.
Had escargot a bit salty but bread dipping great. Followed by shrimp Provençal, for me, too many cherry tomatoes but the pasta cooked to perfection and great broth. Our server was Maggie and she was a great server and a real nice person. Thoroughly enjoyable evening
I was comfortable eating alone and enjoyed the experience while traveling to Charleston.
Love the venue. Staff are always lovely and accommodating. Love the mussels and usually every single one is super delicious. Just a few (out of the whole bowl) were on the edge. Overall it was a great dinner. I will be back and the mussels will still be on my list as wonderful. Thanks.
As ALWAYS, 39 Rue de Jean was superb! Wonderfully eclectic French menu, food prepared and plated w/ skill and care.... and service was impeccable! No, no shrimp and grits.... but DO try the moules! Sacre Bleu!
Love this place! It is a little loud but the food and service was excellent. We definitely go back.
The escargot and muscles were delicious. We were seated in the bar (with a reservation). We sat for 20 minutes before being greeted and given water. The service was less than expected.
We've had two great dinners at 39 Rue de Jean. I always get the salmon. My husband loves the mussels. The second visit he had a salad with duck. Unfortunately, it was the right salad but still an excellent dinner. The service is great.
We ate here 2 nights in a row and if you have not had the Mussels marniere ...you should. Denver was a great server and the whole staff was working hard and pleasant. highly reccomend
Fantastic food and service! Will be back!
This classic Charleston staple has something for everyone. My go to restaurant for large group gatherings or when you just can’t decide where to eat in a town full a great restaurants.
Food was good service was not so good. Service should have been better for a Thursday night in a restaurant that had several empty tables. Probably will return could just have been an off night.
Love eating here before Charleston Music Hall events. We had the Charcuterie Appetizer and then the Harissa Lamb Stew.... delicious! Our waiter Edward was top shelf! Fun time and great eats in this Charleston restaurant.
An excellent selection of classic French foods. Good wine list at decent prices. Attentive and knowledgeable service. Had both dinner and lunch here. We were thoroughly satisfied.
The chicken coq au vin flavors were great.
However, I didn’t think it was possible but some how they over cooked the chicken and instead of being tender and fall off the bone the meat was mushy with zero texture.
We went for lunch. It was exactly what we were looking for. Our waiter, Stephane, was excellent. Engaging and knowledgable. We had 2 starters which we shared and also a bowl of mussels. Delicious! Salads and sandwiches and dessert. It was all good. Highly recommend it. Looking to take some friends coming into Charleston.
The restaurant was great, food was great, service was great, cost of the bill was a bit high for the meal, the restaurant was kind of loud and a little hard to have a conversation
Fantastic food except if you don't like "hots", the shrimp dish had a bunch of red pepper flakes on top that set my mouth on fire.
Absolutely FANTASTIC French Bistro fare. Outstanding service. French Onion soup was the best we’ve ever had anywhere - Croque Madame and Mesculn salad with goat cheese did not disappoint! Will definitely return the next time we are in Charleston!
We ate here on a busy Saturday night based on recommendations from a local. We arrived and were greeted promptly. The place was hoppng and the noise levels were high. We were given our first choice for a table (some of the 2 tops are TINY!). We were greeted by our server who took our beverage order and returned with the beverage and a basket of warm bread. We ordered a salad to share (they are quite large). After a considerable wait for our entrees, the manager came to our table and apologized for the long wait--they were backed up due to several large parties. He offered to comp us a glass of wine or dessert as an apology for the wait. This was unexpected but appreciated. After several minutes, he brought our entrees to the table. We had the trout and the coq a vin. Both entrees were dry and the flavors were lacking. We were quite disappointed and continue to look for our first good dinner in Charleston!
Awesome meal and Bryson was a great waiter! Love this restaurant!
It was a Friday night and my birthday which no one mentioned. They seated us in the bar area. It was very loud and busy. This is normally our favorite. This this was not a great trip. Service was busy and food was rushed.
Food is consistently good and seating usually available. We love it before heading next door to The Charleston Music Hall, super convenient!
Our sever, Edward, added a lot to the enjoyment of the evening. He knows the items offered as well as the best wine pairings for each. Great food!!
It's my wife's favorite Charleston restaurant. As always 39 Rue de Jean was super. It gets a hit on all criteria - Food/Service/Ambiance/Drinks/Everything. They even arranged for it to stop raining long enough to allow me to retrieve our parked car without getting wet.
Our salad and onion soup was fine. When the entree came my chicken dish was well presented but my wife's cauliflower puree was not hot not warm but cold.
The fact that no one came by after a few minutes to see how things were, plus it took the manager several more minutes to come by made it worse.
Upon entering the restaurant it was approximately 25% full. That said the hostess tried to seat us at a 2x3 foot deuce. I opted for one of the many booths that were open.
Thank you for taking time to send us feedback from your dinner last week. I wanted to reach out and apologize that you all had the experience you had, and that we failed to correct a simple issue with your dinner while you all were dining with us. We hope that you all do take time to enjoy another meal with us in the near future, and would be more than happy to accommodate you all with any reservation needs.
Everything was great. You really get a noisy crowd.
I would for dinner only. Dinner has always been good in the past. Brunch was only so so and our service was slow and terrible. It took an hour for our initial drink order to arrive. We had to rush our server for the rest as we all had an event to attend. We had planned 2 hours to eat and make it to the event. As a server, I feel that our table was not prioritized since we had a party of 10 and gratuity was already added to our bills.
Hi Taylor, I wanted to reach out and personally apologize for your less than stellar brunch experience. As you know from dining with us for dinner in the past that this service is not up to our normal standards. Please feel free to reach out to me directly in the near future for any dining needs, so that I may ensure that you all enjoy your selves as per usual.
It was our anniversary and they took great care of us!
Having eaten at 39 Rue de Jean in the past, I was expecting the same experience. That didn't happen. I was expecting the Coquille St. Jacque, which was exceptional, and it was not on the menu. The steak I ordered was good, but not excellent. My husband, whose birthday we were celebrating, had the trout, which was alright, but not great. The worst part of the meal was the noise. It was like eating in a bowling alley. Then, the waitress brought out a dessert menu and said something about celebrating a birthday and that was that. No "happy birthday" or small dessert with a candle - nothing. I don't think I would recommend this place to family or friends. It just wasn't that good.
We are thrilled to hear you have enjoyed our Coquille St. Jacque in the past. I wanted to reach out to you and personally apologize for you all not enjoying your meals that evening as you typically do. We would love to invite you all in again to celebrate a wonderful evening and enjoy a meal with us the way you intended to. Please feel free to reach out to me directly to handle any future reservations. Shannon Doherty GM
Excellent—our first trip to CHS in over 10 years. Always a favorite—still great.
We dressed up thinking we should, because sounded like an upscale restaurant. Well, we are fine with casual dress especially when we are tourists, but when people were allowed in for evening dinner with shorts and t-shirts with holes in the back, that kind of ruined our experience.
Location near visitors center is excellent. Food is also excellent especially the potato soup, the mussels and the bread. The restaurant can be noisy so I would recommend eating at non peak hours if you want a quiet atmosphere. The wait staff is the best in Charleston. Do not miss a meal here.
Our service was excellent, attentive and non-intrusive. Especially enjoyed the birthday crème brulee for my friend and surprised with one for me! Will definitely be back and gladly recommend to friends.
Our server, Bryson was fabulous! We was very attentive and overall pleasant.
