Anthony's Fish Grotto - La Mesa
Great service. Food for lunch was a little pricey.
We’ve been to Anthony’s many many times - quick lunch, weekday dinner, sometimes to pick up fish from the market.....and it’s a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. This time we were a party of 8 for a family gathering. They graciously observed our seating preference request. There was something for everyone on the menu, everything was prepared well, and the service exemplary. Anthonys does not pretend to be anything it’s not - and in that context a totally enjoyable meal and experience.
Fish was undercooked. Server was very miserly with extra condiment requests. Seemed irritated at requests for more. Adequate amounts should have come with the meal.
We are new to East County and kept seeing this seafood place from the 8. Friday we decided to try it. It exceeded expectation. It was busy and buzzy, service very good and although the food was excellent, it is of a style. That style is a touch traditional dinner house. But excellent none the less.
The setting is stylised and we liked it. Being an evening in January we did not get to enjoy the lakeside position as much as we would have liked, so we will return to do so. And that is the bottom line. In a place full of excellent dining options, we will be back.
The air conditioning was blowing on us through the entire dinner and the food quality vs. cost was not what I expected. I have had great experiences in the past so maybe it was an off night.
The fish is not as good as it used to be. The breading is too heavy. There is no option to just have your fish grilled. The fillets are small. Restaurants like Fish House Veracruz is what I would like Anthony’s too aspire to.
The fillets are grilled and are healthier than the options at Anthony’s.
I really want Anthony’s to succeed. My family moved to SD in 1949 and Anthony’s at the waterfront had always been a notable restaurant. I sincerely wish for healthier grilled options. And I wish you success.
Outstanding food as usual. Great service even on a crowded Sunday afternoon.
Such a beautiful restaurant. Weirdly, it’s very busy between 5-6pm and not busy towards 7. I think it’s because it’s mainly older people that eat there. Anyways, service and food were excellent!
The food and service were great; however, the prices for some items are a bit high for how little you get. The squid steak dish was delicious, as well as the coconut shrimp!
I made reservations but they sat us in the very back through the kitchen where everybody was speaking loudly back-and-forth making noise etc. In the back there is no view other than a wall so we were very disappointed with where we sat. The food is very good as usual - however the fish and shrimp dinner ready and was very soggy don't understand why… The last time I ordered it it had a nice dry crunch to it. Could've been sitting on the side? Not sure. Overall, everything else was spectacular
We have dined at Anthonys on many occasions, in fact it is one of our favorite go-to for date night. However, this past experience was rushed from the time we sat down. The server was rushed, there were no silverware on the table, and we got our salad about 10 minutes before the food was served. Anytime we put a fork down, someone cleared our table. It was like they just wanted us to eat fast and leave. Granted there was no wait, and parking available on a Friday at 6:15. If they have changed management, they need to rethink this “rushed” idea. We would prefer a dining experience, as it has been in the past.
A great place to eat. Outstanding food. The best service you could ever want on a busy Sunday afternoon.
We dine at Anthony’s frequently. The food and service are reliably good and the ambience is calming. Another great meal out!
I have dined at Anthony's Fish Grotto's for decades.
In fact my Dad went to school with Anthony Ghio at San Diego High School. With the La Mesa location the only location left standing we dined there often up until 9 months ago. We try new restaurants and visit other favorites weekly then last night I went back to AFG and it was the most disappointing service and the food was so inferior that I vow to never go back!
It took 12 minutes to get our simply made cocktails! Then our server forgot cocktail sauce we requested for our Calamari, took 5 minutes to finally get it!
The red clam chowder was pathetic, Ahi stack was not what it should have been, the tuna pieces were way to big and the color was washed out as older fish gets, my wife was absolutely disgusted with it and ate the garnish and the fill used to make the stack.
My 89 year old Mother want a bay shrimp cocktail and was told they have been out for several weeks, really!
My chard Octopus was so salty I could barely eat some of it, Oh I asked for a steak knife and that took 5 or so minutes for my server to bring it to me.
It does not please me to write this review but it should be known how bad this visit was.
Great local spot
Wonderful New Years Eve dinner with my wife. We had Sal as our waiter. He very much helped make the evening special. Thank you to all! Happy New Year
Considering that it was New Year's Eve, not too bad. Half hour late for reservation but very good service once seated. Again because of the day, some of the food was slow coming out and all a bit dried out.
Made a reservation online using OpenTable. Once we arrived they disregarded our reservation for 4, and we waited for 43minutes to be seated. What’s the point of taking reservations if your not going to honor them?? Spent over $200 on drinks, appetizers and dinner. Food was over priced and had no flavor.
We had a 6:15 reservation, however, we were not seated until nearly 7. The previous time we went to Anthony's, we had a reservation, and an email confirmation, yet they did not have us in their system and we had to wait nearly an hour. They treated us as though we had no reservation, even after I showed them my email. The food was acceptable. Our table was under a bright light and a vent blowing cold air. All in all, not a great experience.
The service, food and ambience are very good. I would highly recommend Anthony's Fish Grotto to anyone. There is also a beautiful outside area to eat and enjoy the view of the lake.....
I had a really good shrimp scampi and my husband enjoyed the shore combo - both were delicious! The service was amazing and the beautiful pond and the dog friendly patio are awesome.
This has always been my family’s favorite restaurant in San Diego. We used to visit the one downtown but happily visit the one in La Mesa every time we are in town. The food is always amazing and the service is great!
We were originally suppose to be there at 5:30 but driving from Utah we ran late and called to change to 6PM, presantly and much to my surprise we were seated IMMEDIATELY at 6PM and I really appreciate that. Also the lady server was very excellent and the food was fantastic. Thank you for helping us make this a pleasant experience for our San Diego friends.
The Anthony's experience is always stellar. If you havent been, GO. Im a 50 year customer.
Very disappointing Xmas Eve experience, especially compared to nice ones from years past.
Food was awful. Ceasar salad dressing was watery, red chowder was salty, and the fish and chips literally was a couple slabs of plain fried fish on a plate with some over-cooked fries, no garnish, no spices, more like something you'd get at a "fish shack." We had a disengaged waitress, who was barely around and once carried a bussing tub with her while checking on table. Departed tables next to us were left askew with crumbs on floor, no effort to prepare for another seating. It felt old, as opposed to a classic Anthony's. We will not be back.
I have been going to this Anthony's for 35-40 years. It's our family favorite. We've been there the past few Christmas Eve's and had great service and food. This year, the service was terrible. While we understand it was a busy night we watched multiple tables seated after us, receive their food and almost finish by the time we received ours - and only after we complained. It was the longest delay I've had at any restaurant for a very long time. Our server never came to us to tell us anything. After finally complaining, our food was then brought out by the manager - still without an apology. Seriously so disappointing for a special occasion.
Place was noisy and totally full. Service was very slow. Drinks were good. Food was good. But for $18.00 I got 1 piece of fish and an order of Coleslaw!!! Yikes. The menu is confusing. Fish, available with Coconut Rice....$17.95 but the rice is not included in price? UGH! Good food but very pricey for what you get.
I am a regular customer because the food, service, and ambience is always outstanding!
Very busy and a little loud. We were in a booth and employees would stand and talk loudly (giving instructions or whatever) and it was annoying. Our server was good but not great.
Love that they have a Brunch menu now- much needed in East County!
Our dinner was excellent The ambiance and atmosphere made for a nice relaxing dinner. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and provided fine service to us throughout our dinner. Overall, I highly recommend Anthony for excellent seafood and a great value for the money spent on our dinner.
Waitress Becky and her helper (did not get his name) made a great dinner outstanding. She is one of the best servers we have ever had. Knowledgeable about menu with a couple great suggestions. We needed something and it was at our table immediately! She is awesome.
Great food, reasonable prices, the kitchen is really fast! Each staff member was very friendly and helpful.
Anthony's is one of our "go to" locations for dining outside. It's peaceful, the view is lovely, the wait staff is attentive, and the food is very good.
Our experience was excellent. Food was great as usual. Love coming to Anthony's, always a treat.
Nicely placed table with good view and quiet. Food was served quickly and very good.
Everything was lovely for our anniversary lunch! Our waitress was very nice, but she didn’t come around to check on us much. We had to ask waiters walking by to bring us things. That part could use improvement!
