Anthony's Fish Grotto - La Mesa
Everything was lovely for our anniversary lunch! Our waitress was very nice, but she didn’t come around to check on us much. We had to ask waiters walking by to bring us things. That part could use improvement!
I am so sorry I don't have our servers name but he was so good. He was friendly, efficient and very personable. There were three of us and we each really loved what we had ordered. Our granddaughter had filet mignon and said it was excellent, I had swordfish Mediterranean and it was fantastic and my husband had the scampi and thought it was delicious. WE will definitely go back and can't wait for warmer weather to sit at one of the outdoor table along the water.
Very pleasant sitting on the patio - our dog enjoyed it too!
The fish from the "Fresh Catch of the Day" was nothing but. The food was served on the cold side with the fish being a bit greasy or oily. An old venerable reastaurant going down hill.
I was great!
Love this place, lunch menu lots of options but a bit pricey
We had fish and chips (chips were ok but need to be really crisp and hot), the salmon reuben, yes reuben: it was very good. The cobb salad: good portion and clam chowder, not a lot of clams and tuna sandwich (ok)
it was celebration of birthday so I think they did comp dessert. we love it for the lunch specials and the pond view. very relaxing and no rushing to reset the table.
After 24 years away, it was a real treat to visit old haunts like Anthony’s! Still one of San Diego’s classic restaurants along with the Kaiserhof and the Brigantine. So glad we went back. We’ll be back again!
It was over priced from what we have gotten there before. We have been Loyal Anthony's fans for years and years. However, we won't be going back as the quality has really gone down hill and the prices have gone up. What a shame, it was one of our favorite places to go to.
We love this place! Great staff, great food, great setting!
Had reservations for 6:30
They said it would take about 10 minutes
Waited 35 mins they forgot to call us
I know they were busy but really
This is an atmospheric place, with tables overlooking the lake which at night is lit beautifully, making it quite romantic.
Ordered drinks...after 15 minutes, salad served. I asked waitress why cocktail was taking so long. I wanted it before my meal. She said she could not control the bartender and he must be busy. The martini I ordered finally came and did not have barely any alcohol in it. I felt ripped off. After food served I asked the waitress for salt and pepper because the food was bland. She never brought it. We were out on the patio and I could not find any salt and pepper. At the end of meal I told what I thought about drink and she said she'd tell the bartender... as if I wanted to pay for another. The time was 4:30pm on a Friday. It was not terribly busy. We won't be going back.
First time at the La Mesa location - was a former San Diego location customer, but haven't been there in a number of years. All the food was exactly the same as before - outstanding! Thank you for an incredible meal. I will visit again when in town.
Great family spot
This Anthony's has a great bar as well as indoor and outdoor seating. It overlooks a large pond surrounded by trees and pets are allowed in one section. It's all very pleasant. Our swordfish and haddock were ok but not great. Our server may have had too many tables to keep in touch with us in a timely fashion. We had plenty of time, so no harm, no foul. We'd recommend it but maybe different entrees.
Loooved it! I think we even created a new dish when my guest asked for the scallops to be served over pasta instead of getting a side dish—they accommodated her request, and it was delish. It was a lovely dinner—I’ve been there several times, though I live in Chicago.
When you come from out of town you hope for the service to be great, and because of your past experience you hope for a great food eating experience. Our waitress was great and the food was very tasty.
The food was ok. It took a very long time to receive the food. The server was ok. It was a birthday celebration and there was no happy birthday or anything.
The meal was delicious as always! A fabulous server named Sal met and exceeded all of our needs!
Everything was perfect!
Great food and atmosphere.
Great place for a family dinner. The food is always delicious and the service is outstanding. The view of the pond with the ducks playing in it is also a great view
Very average. I have enjoyed Anthony’s for decades. Please take better care of the restaurant in terms of cleanliness, having an attentive and friendly staff and keeping the food fresh and attractive. My last several visits have been disappointing. You are losing your way. Never thought this would happen.
We had the Sand Dabs. They are excellent. We are from the East Coast so we dont get these. Great restaurant.
Excellent food and service! We’ll be back!👍
Great place for a romantic dinner.
Better fish restaurants exist. Service was slow. Location is hard to find. Cost was OK
Find a way to keep customer sounds from crossing the entire room...sound deadening needs improvements.
I had a dirty dish person take my plate before I was finished with it. Felt like I had to hover over my food to keep it. Also, someone better dressed should take plates. The person who took mine looked like he had a dishwashers apron on - seemed unclean. Reached in on me and I felt repulsed by what felt like a lack of manners - excuse me may I take your plate would be appropriate but I heard a grunt and my plate was lifted off the table - with salad and bread still on it. They need to clean dishes that fast?
When water is delivered the server should not put fingers around the rim of the glass. Hold the stem. I did not drink the water because of server fingerprints near the drinking areas of the glass...yuck.
Do not ask me to take food from the server and give it to someone sitting at the table. That is not
my job. If your server is too short to reach the table find someone taller...or less lazy?
When I sat down I noticed lettuce from a prior customer on the floor...yuck.
Good food, good service but expensive for what you get. Nice local and ambiance on the lake
96th birthday for our friend. Reservations made and preferred window booth was ready on time as we arrived. Service was outstanding. Our waitress was attentive, stopped by frequently, polite and friendly. Food was excellent as usual. Our quest enjoyed his meal and complimentary chocolate mousse.
Food was very good, but the service was very slow and we had to ask for refills on Coffee and Soda. I have been there before, and not had this problem I will give them another chance.
Very good lunch,as always. Anthony's never disappoints. Lots of options for any palate. Service was cordial and prompt. We will return when in the area.
I reallybdislike when Hostess bascially lie about them setting up your table when really they are waiting for a party to finish. I make reservations when we are a large part and have young kids. We arrived early and we didnt expect to be seated early, but the hostess checked me in and aaid they were "just setting up our table." 30 minutes later, with the hostess doing everything she could to not look in our direction they seat 7 other parties with our reservations, ignoring another party with a 7pm reservation. When my husband got annoyed and went to check, the hostess apologized foe the wait and blamed the delay on a party that hadn't finished and they were finally clearing the table and would be seating us shortly. They completely forgot about the highchair I requested and the waitress was sweet, but kinda ignored us for long periods of time.
I want to go back with a smaller group, but if you want to be seated at a certain time, make a reservation 30 minutes before you want and be prepared to wait anyways as if you didn't make a reservation.
We always have a wonderful meal at Anthonys. The staff are always tentative and friendly.
We loved the inception of brunch at Anthony's. The special menu additions are perfect. The filet benedict and avocado toast were delicious. Portions were generous. The fruit cup was quite special with toasted slivers of almonds and coconut over the top of blueberries, pineapple and raspberries.
We were seated inside by the window...view of the water..however, there were dead flies on the window sill...not very appetizing..then my husband and I asked to substitute steamed spinach for a starch side ...the waitress came back and said..that will be 5 dollars more..crazy...when a side salad is less...that has never happened...a bit disappointed since we frequent this restaurant often...
Food was good just expensive for what you got. Lunch fish and chips was two tiny pieces of fish.
Anthony’s is a throwback to the 50s dining experience in which the inside is a grotto feel with stone everywhere and a kitschy cool vibe outdoor patio by a lake, bocchi ball court, lights and patio furniture. The service began rather poorly as I believe the server assigned to our table had her hands full with another large group. We waited 20 minutes after being sat before being noticed by another server (Kiley) stationed at the complete other end of the restaurant who jumped into action and saved the evening as far as service goes. Thanks Kiley! You are commended for going the extra mile. We started off with cucumber martini’s which were a bit sweet and had some light evervescence to it. Not what you expect from your martini, but decent enough. Probably should have gone with the mai tai’s. The crab stuffed portobello mushroom appetizer was delicious. We both had the Alaskan halibut and this is where Anthony’s shined. It is prepared with a very light breading, grilled to keep it moist. It was really terrific. Along with it I had the rice pilaf (basically a rice-a-roni type dish) and I had the slaw (which came topped with a pineapple cream sauce that was tasty, but a little too much cream). My wife had the salad with their house dressing which was just fine. The wine list was sparse but we settled on a Grigio which was very sweet. But I think you are likely paying for the notion of heading back to a Mad Men tiki/grotto atmosphere. Highlights: The crab stuffed portobello mushroom, the halibut and the throwback vibe and also the server who rescued us from oblivion. We’d still come back and would likely take my mom and dad back for a meal here, as they might get a kick out of this place. I’ll recommend it as an alternative to the La Mesa Brigantine for local seafood fare.
We’ve been here twice in the last three weeks. Both times we’ve sat outside- which is beautiful. Both occasions the service wasn’t great; we were served incorrect beverages and our food and beverage orders were forgotten and never received during our meal. The seafood was good, but our steak and happy hour flatbread were not great. I DID appreciate the fact they don’t give out straws (to protect the turtles, ducks and birds)- which I heard the staff were not happy about since most customers do prefer them.
