Anthony's Fish Grotto - La Mesa
So definitely old world kitsch which is kind of interesting and a throwback to bygone years. A refresh could help. The water is unique and a nice addition. Lauren's service e was excellent! The food and drinks not so much. The Snapper and Salmon were ok. Not a lot of flavor in either dish. The asparagus was overcooked, mashed potatoes were bland, and the coleslaw was odd. Interestingly, the mixed drinks may have been the worst part of the meal. The bartender added soda water to the Old Fashioned! Just wrong.
My fish was greasy and it was not fresh (tasted fishy). We had to wait approximately 10 minutes for our waiter to bring water. We won’t be going back
The service and food were both very good. My Catfish was perfect.
After a rushed service from Anthony's on a resent visit, we decided to try again and the good service was back! I am glad to know that whatever was going on a few months ago is not gong to be a permanent change. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner with the same waiter even and were very pleased. We selected a booth and when seated, were told that the table had been just sanitized to ease our minds from the current health concerns. I am happy to once again give Anthony's 5 stars.
Always outstanding food with great service. Our waiter had worked for Anthony's for 42 years and the service showed. Best place for seafood.
Everything was excellent, our server Kathleen exceptional! We will return!
I have been going to Anthony's since Oct 1946 when i was just 4 months old. Of course i don't have any recollection. However I do know the food. I get the steamed clams, fish and chips with house salad. My wife gets the fried shrimp house salad and clam chowder. We go several times each year.
My reservation time was met and the food an service were outstanding
Fabulous food and ambiance. Love the pond and fountain. After a fabulous lunch we fed the ducks.
We started with the shrimp cocktail which was superb. The sculpin is a favorite fish so we were thrilled to see it on the menu. Plus the fish and chips are better than anywhere. Our waiter Salleh's service was excellent. He was attentive to our drink refills and the requests for more lemons etc. He even brought us a small dessert to cheer us after we had shared what a rough week it had been. That kindness went a long way!!! We love going to Anthony's!!
The last time we ate at Anthony’s was when it was located on the pier and it was excellent. We figured the other location would be just as good, but the fish was awful. Totally over done, but the salad and baked potato was good.
Food was great as usual. When making reservation, was asked if this was special occasion. Replied yes, birthday. When arriving, hostess did not review reservation special notes in reservation. Our waiter (Austin) was friendly but young and very inexperienced. One of our sides dishes ( salad) that comes with the entree was charged as a chicken salad appetizer ( $15.00). Waiter asked if we needed refills on our drinks and then never returned with them. Worst service ever in 15+ years of birthday celebrations at Anthony’s. Place is also looking dated. I’m thinking it’s time to find a new place for my wife’s go to restaurant for her birthday.
Such an adorable place, unfortunately the food was really bad. Mushy rice, shrimp trio-some under cooked some over cooked. Very disappointing meal
The wine and beer selection was great. The service was outstanding! We were not very pleased with the appetizer (shrimp & crab cocktail). My husband did not like his salmon. My squid steak was great. The salad was just so-so. Great view!
Our first visit. The setting outside near the lake was perfect. The outside seating area is not overcrowded and the water feature in the lake created a white noise that help block surrounding conversations. The service was attentive but not intrusive and the food was delicious. We will be back.
It was a mistake to go here on Valentine's Day. What is normally a very pleasant experience was spoiled by the management failure to plan for the crowd and the rush. We booked a dinner at 8:00 but arrived at 7:00 to enjoy a cocktail aperitif, but that was a failure. After sitting for 20 minutes with no service, and seeing five couples arrive after us get their drinks, I went to the manager to ask for help. 10 minutes later, an angry looking bartender showed up, and literally asked, "Wadda want?". As rude and unpleasant as possible. This person should consider other options for employment. The drinks arrive, at $11.00 each, and were undrinkable. My wife's was gooey over sweet, and mind tasted of chemicals, my guess is some type of dish soap. We left them behind as we were called to our table for supper. Our waiter, Robert, was beyond helpful and friendly, my compliments. However, something went wrong. Again, tables were seated after us, ordered, and got there meals. Our order did not show. Robert finally told us our order was placed, but then was "lost" but I do not know what that means. Their chairs are not comfortable, and after an hour my wife was cramping, and had to walk around.
After an hour and twenty minutes, the second order of our meal arrived, and while typically over salted, was delicious. So good, we ate every bit. The manager did apologize, and did comp us the appetizers. Final comments would be to just not go here on any busy day. Recommend Monday or Tuesday, with no holidays, and avoid any other day. The management just cannot organize for a busy evening.
The food was absolutely delicious as usual. The crab stuffed mushroom appetizer was amazing. Our server, Sal, could not have been any more helpful and friendly. A great dining experience!
I arrived at 7:40 for a 7:45 reservation I finally got my table at 8:45 now granted this was Valentine's Day but still I arrived with 20 people waiting at the counter by the time I got my table I was the last guy there. They were severely short-staffed and quite frankly the food was rather bland. I've been to this restaurant many times with varying results, think I might have to skip this one for awhile.
My wife and I have been taking our family to Anthony's for many years. My only complaint was about the bread It was like an English Muffin I remembered the bread being better.
It was Valentines Day, and I made a special request for a window seat. When we checked in, they asked if we minded sitting outside. I said that it would be fine, provided there was a heater and a waiter/waitress that would no ignore us. We had to ask 4 times for the heater (they were willing to provide my wife a blanket, but it’s hard to wrap yourself in a blanket and eat dinner), and our waitress was not very attentive. I know, it was Valentines Day, and they were crowded, but we saw other wait staff that seemed to pay attention to the other tables around us. The food was outstanding, I had the Ono, and my wife the salmon. We usually find that one or the other of us get the better meal, but tonight they were both great. We are fairly regular, at least once a month customers, so we are familiar with the routine. Tonight did not meet our expectations, except for the food.
Start out with a reservation at 6pm. Not seated until 6:45pm. We were seated then moved to a perfect Valentine's booth. Our server was a exceptional young man with a great personality!
We had a Valentine’s Day reservation. We waiting 20 min past our reservation time to be seated, not the worst. We were seated at a table and soon noticed there were two whole tangerines under our table on the floor. Apparently clean up was pretty minimal between diners. I ordered a blackberry mojito , it was ok... mostly ice. We ordered the crab cake, it was ok tasting, but very very small for the cost. We both ordered a fish dinner, me the swordfish and him the mahi mahi. My fish was very undercooked, inedible. By the time our server made it back to check on us, he was done eating. I let her know that the fish was under... she asked if I wanted her to TAKE IT BACK AND COOK IT MORE...I’m sorry... what?! I told her that I did NOT want it cooked more that I would not be eating anything. Then she brought our bill... with the inedible fish still on it. I asked for it to be removed and she said she would ask again. She came back with the dish removed from the bill and explained that the manager told her no the first time. I invited the manager to come and eat the dish that was served to me... he never joined us.
I understand that occasions like Valentine’s Day are busy. I never expect perfection, but I do expect a certain level of service. This restaurant did not even come close to meeting any realistic expectation.
We had the perfect lake side window table to watch the ducks and enjoy a beautiful evening.
Great Valentines Dinner
They charge you for rolls now. Used to give unlimited free sliced bread
Portions smaller and higher prices
Seats are to close to each other
Service was slow need more parking
They don’t have bay shrimp anymore even though it says so in menu.
Excellent service and food! Beautiful view! Great place for a special occasion or just for a casual lunch, brunch, or dinner.
Great place. Outdoor dining is a must. Been going here for years
Great location on the lake and excellent food. We celebrate Anniversary's, Valentine's and Birthday's there.
Beuatifull place. A litlle far. We used To go To the one that was downtown 35 years ago. this is different than that
We Had an open table reservation for 7 o’clock. We were told there were no tables available. They seated for parties ahead of us, and we were seated around 715. I feel like they seated first come first served, regardless of whether we had a reservation.
Came back after almost 10 years to celebrate our vacation in San Diego. Lived in area years ago and wanted to rekindle some good memories. many good friends still live in the area.
Everything was good except they sat us with my view directly into the waste baskets and the in and out entrance for the waiters. So the ambiance really was awful. A screen or something to block the area would have been nice-l should have complained but it’s against my nature.
So to benefit others perhaps you could improve the area. Many like me won’t complain but you should care to make it a good experience. Thank You
It was my husband‘s 80th birthday and they had a table reserved by the window with a view of the pond and fountain with a “Reserved” sign on the table. We felt like we were treated as a very special occasion. The food was excellent, as always. The service was outstanding. We always go there for my husband‘s birthday.
Great fish and chips, best in town as always we will be back
We had a party of 12 for my husband's 60th birthday. The food was excellent! Our server was friendly and efficient. We were impressed that she made sure to bring out the food for those sitting against the booths so that they would not have to reach over people who were eating and had their food.
I was extremely pleased with the entire experience.
Food and service are both consistently good here. Our fish dishes were excellent and nicely prepared. Service was spot on and attentive. Wonderful experience.
This was our first visit to Anthony’s in La Mesa. For years we dined at the Anthony’s on the water in downtown San Diego and the food was always very good!! We miss that location. Anyway, we flew out to San Diego for my wife’s birthday celebration and to dine at Anthony’s and we did know about the downtown Anthony’s closing a few years ago. The food at the La Mesa location was just ok as it was not near as good as their downtown location. My wife had the Ono which was bland and had no flavor. I had the Mahi Mahi which was suppose to have an Asian flavor and the flavor was fair at best. We have always enjoyed Anthony’s cole slaw with the creamy pineapple dressing. The cole slaw was such a disappointment as we tasted no pineapple at all in the dressing. Our best food was the New England Clam Chowder and the Coconut Shrimp for an appetizer which we enjoyed and lastly we enjoyed their Raspberry Sweet Tea. The service was good but overall the food was just ok and I doubt we will return.
We sat outside by the water. Heads up it’s also a dog friendly area. Our server Beckie was great.
Great Place and People. Went on a slow night and was still wow by the food and service. Will definitely be back.
Quality seafood at reasonable prices. No nonsense frills. Basic good food. Dog patio is a nice feature -- we boarded our dog that day. Wish they had more locations like in the good old days. We will keep coming back as long as this one is open.
