We had a great time at The Baker House. It’s like stepping back in time. My husband and I both had the Prime Rib which was very good. Our waiter was super nice!
Sunday brunch was fabulous experience! But very short of staff, who tried so hard to handle but long waits for service and empty food trays, delays getting replaced led to disappointment. Quite generous with the Mimosas! Overall I would still highly recommend, just pick early time for reservation. Staffing problems are just typical of the times.
Have been many times and usually LOVE Baker House!
This past Sunday, however it was evident that most likely due to Covid, everything was under par. The lovely bar was closed (Sunday 11:30 champagne brunch reservation, so maybe that is normal)… The Sunday brunch buffet was under stocked, the poor (though lovely) waitress was under available - no doubt the only one (we saw) serving! We waited too long for everything and heard other’s complaints as well. Presume Kitchen was under staffed as well… BUT again, we understand that these are difficult times to get staff to work!
SO, nonetheless we enjoyed our time and hope the next time will go better!
Great ambience with not par food and service. You can find a better breakfast option for the value in Lake Geneva.
Horrible we had to walk out it was so bad
This is an amazing place to have dinner! The service was 5 star!
Wonderful ambience, great service. I had the duck and I was still hungry afterwards. Rather small portion of meat and also potatoes. Otherwise I love the place.
Unfortunately they don’t have enough staff and they run out of food
Food was cold; menu was very limited; bathroom smell in the eating rooms
Worst time ever spent at the Baker House … never have we had such a bad time and couldn’t wait to finish our food and leave. I noted that we were celebrating my fiancé’s 60th birthday. The seating wasn’t too cozy especially after the hostess seated a couple with their kids in the game room by us. It was annoying to say the least. And not even a complimentary dessert for my love. Since the hostess had to be our server also, I feel that they must have been short staffed. The food wasn’t as good as we had in the past - his steak was very fatty and not worth the price.
This was such a disappointment especially since we come here often and have never been let down especially for a celebration. Not sure we will come back
Ribeye had zero seasoning. No sides came with a $48 steak. Sad. Chicken was ok. Potatoes were very good
They were clearly just keeping it together. The house is beautiful, but the meal was random, tasteless, and awful. Desserts looked like they were slapped on the serving trays by a 2 year-old.
Average. Not bad and not great. We went for Sunday brunch. The wait staff was short people but they did a good job considering. The food was OK but nothing special and the buffet line was in a cramped space without a lot of variety. Most of the selection outside of the mimosas and the desserts, which were both very good, could be had at any free hotel breakfast. The experience was fine but I expected more for $35.
Neat place to visit. We got a history from the manager and had great service and food for dinner.
Ambiance was nice in old victorian house. The service was friendly and fun. Under staffed though. Server brought out a dessert for birthday celebration and was appreciated. The food ordered was not good. One order was sent back before we took a bite. Don’t order the ribs. Not worth it. Way over priced for the quality of food.
food was so bad we left paying only for appitizers - salad was wilted - duck was not edible - small table and no clearing
Beautiful, charming, older home on the lake. Our table overlooked the water and was a beautiful setting for our 25th anniversary dinner. We had a seafood parfait and a pork belly appetizer which were excellent. For dinner we enjoyed the duck breast, and stuffed chicken with crab. Too full for dessert. Service was attentive.
We would go back.
We have always loved Baker House for Sunday Brunch but had an awful experience for our first Dinner there. The list of issues is so long….hostess forgot we were there waiting in the bar….we were taken past beautifully decorated rooms and empty tables with comfortable chairs to be seated in the porch at a little glass table and stiff bamboo chairs. We had to hunch over our little table to eat and we’re surrounded by tables still full of dirty dishes. As we looked through the large window at the other guests seated at comfortable tables in beautiful settings, we noticed they had luxuries not provided to us like candles and salt & petter. Lol we were definitely the forgotten people tossed in the corner vs treated like values guests. We ordered an appetizer, soups and entrees which ALL were brought to our tiny table at the EXACT SAME TIME. Therefore, our entrees were cold by the time we got to them. They staff didn’t even seem to be too concerned as they played Tetris with the dishes to cram it all on the table and then disappear. I ordered a bottle of wi e with dinner which I later had to hunt our server down to cancel when we were more than halfway through our cold meal and no signs of wine. We just ate quickly and asked for our check. I’m so disappointed as it was always one of our favorites. On a positive note, the bar and bartenders were amazing as always. It was very sad to think a place we always looked forward to dining at seems to be going downhill. :(
Not enough food for the prices! Steak was not cooked right and potato’s were hard
I ordered the lobster tail and it came covered with cayenne pepper. The sides were overcooked and not very tasty. I sent the lobster back and about 20 minutes later it came out undercooked. the service was terrific but there are definitely issues in the kitchen. Great ambience and a beautiful place.
The Sunday brunch was beyond disappointing, and at $35 a terrible value. Small selection, and a few of the entrees were just bizarre mixtures of overcooked meat mixed with pasta, like something concocted from last week’s leftovers. An undressed cabbage slaw salad mixed with macaroni and an unidentifiable spongy substance was particularly strange. Dishes remained empty for long periods. The only standout was the bacon, and the small selection of desserts was decent. Service was good however, our server was attentive and friendly. Definitely not recommended, at least not for Sunday brunch.
Second time going to their Sunday Champagne Brunch and it was wonderful!
Love the ambiance of this historic home, and they have plenty of good options for breakfast/lunch without being overwhelming.
Will definitely be back
Love the Victorian house and the amazing ambience of the place and staff.
Well I don’t even know where to start as this was a horrific experience and believe anyone would be shocked at how we were treated! If I were the owner I would make sure to address and possibly change my staff ASAP. Initially a good experience but extremely quiet. Nothing could be said without everyone hearing what you are saying. Great salad and a good cocktail but then after eating half my steak I noticed a hair in my food. No big deal as it does happen so instead of making a scene I walked to the check in station and told the employee of the situation so no one else would be aware. I thought it would be the polite thing to do and didn’t want to ruin anyone elses. The girl became extremely uncomfortable and told the waitress and she came out right away. Her first comment was “how much of the steak did you eat” making us feel like we were the ones that did something wrong. She said she would come to the table to see what we were talking about. No apology no understanding at all. She came back to out table 10 minutes later and mind you everyone could hear…”ok where is it” again making us feel like we planted the hair. It was not my wife’s or my hair color or length. The waitress then proceeded to say “ I have been authorized to take half of the steak off the bill”. I then told her that I would pay for everything but the steak as my appetite was lost completely as most people’s would be. She then said she would be back but never showed up after over 10 minutes of waiting. So my wife and I walked up to the check in stand and we LITERALLY COULD HEAR THEM TALKING ABOUT US!!!! Saying things that would make any guest cringe. Our waitress walked out and seen us over hear the conversation and was shocked to see us standing there listening. After seeing us she told us she was not the one saying anything and said “I guess we will forget about the bill”. I have travelled the country and been to many restaurants but this was the worst experience of my life.
I had been to the baker house three years ago off-season for an organized tea and while I found the surroundings lovely, they were less than neat, clean and organized. I assumed that was because it was off-season but found the same this visit at the height of tourist season.
It was absolutely the worst dining experience of my life! After one hour we had to hunt down the server who told us our food would be out shortly and then brought it to the table and it was totally wrong, and totally cold. I sent mine back but the others only ate theirs because they were hungry. We asked to see a manager and our server left and came back 15 minutes later and told us that she was a Manager on duty which was hysterical. Another family left and to say least were complaining very loudly. There was another family impatiently waiting for their food. The sad part of this is there were only people at four tables at any given time. We brought some friends who live in the area and if word-of-mouth holds true, Baker house will not be in business very long. It was an absolute disaster from start to finish!
Was very sad that Baker House was out of a lot food. No Bread. Never heard of that. Our waitress was good and funny. We were visiting Wisconsin to celebrate our Mother 80th Birthday
We made a reservation for our family of eleven for a special anniversary celebration and we’re told they could accommodate us all at one table, and then we were placed at two separate tables! Plus there was another group in our room. Our waitress was pleasant, but never refilled our water glasses. She never returned except when bringing our orders and the check. They do not have a lot of options on their menu to begin with and then our waitress began by telling us all they didn’t have. We ordered the large charcuterie board which came with barely enough for two! Not everyone could even have a taste. There was a very long delay between being seated and even having our order taken and then we waited over an hour for our food! The best thing I can say is that the steaks were good, other options, not so much. For dessert, only one option, key lime pie, which did not taste homemade, more like a frozen Mrs.Smiths. After spending over $800.00 for dinner and a drink, I do not think we will be returning… was hoping for a more memorable event!
Over all-excellent. GREAT AMBIENCE!
Take you back to the late 1800's.
Will go again.
We came here several years ago and the waitresses would wear flapper outfits and hats that made things feel like that old style and gave it a lot of character!
The buffet was also alot better then too! This buffet was lacking with little choices and we were there for over an hour and the fruit bowl had only a few blueberries and strawberries on top of the large amount of watermelon and was never refilled...
The eggs, biscuits and gravy bacon and sausage were not much better than what you could find at IHOP or Denny's... The 3 options for lunch food were limited and not anything unique. If you have kids good luck, not really a lot of options other than dessert and even that was lacking...
This seems very disappointing for us to pay $35 per person for mediocre food...
I hope that this information will be used to better serve those patrons in the future!
Beautiful setting in a historic home that feels like you’re stepping back in time. Every detail is adorable and the champagne brunch is a perfect treat! They had classic lunch and breakfast options on the buffet and our whole family loved it!
The vegetable and potatoes undercooked, the stuffed chicken white not a really nice color to the breast at all. Chocolate on my chair which I sat on with my beautiful black dress, red drippings of something down the arm of the chair and a large piece of cake under my chair which I stepped in. Waitress did not follow directions on how we wanted to pay. Also, there wasn't an option for soup as they had none. Celebrating a 50th birthday and zero recognition to that. No attempts to offer change or something to replace the undercooked food. Beautiful scenery but not worth the price.
They were short of staff so we got off to a slow start but our waitress was very nice even though a little bit frazzled. The food was delicious!
We had a lovely birthday dinner. The food was delicious. They were short of staff, and our server worked tirelessly to provide for our needs. The atmosphere was incredible, with a sunset that completed the evening perfectly!
No Bread offered or available with two Salmon/Pasta meal. We were told they were out as they were getting new vendors. (Bakery and Food Stores down the street). Unpleasant smell in dining area where we were seated.
Management does not appear to know what they are doing, and could have helped the servers clear tables, pour water glasses, etc.
Servers were few and trying their best……however, they could have checked on us periodically.
Two other tables waited 2 hours for food. Never did get what they ordered before meal. Heard many people complaining.
We had a beautiful table with a great view of the lake. The food was excellent! I would definitely recommend the salmon. Our server was excellent. We will definitely go back again.
So severely short staffed that the three servers in the whole restaurant were bussing the tables and washing the dishes (meaning they were absent for most of the meal). Drink orders took 20 minutes. So many people were just walking out. Wait staff was not trained and couldn’t answer menu questions. A woman was loudly complaining about not having toilet paper in the bathroom and the poor girl just threw her arms up and said, “I don’t know where they keep it, it’s my first day here”. Food was lackluster, cold. Fillet was cooked perfectly, vegetable looked like coke slaw from the trash. Potato wedges were cold and rubbery. This place should NOT be open if they cannot staff it. Waste of $170 for dinner for two.
I took my wife here for our anniversary. The ambiance of the hotel/restaurant was wonderful. We were looking to a quiet and romantic dinner overlooking Lake Geneva. Alas, the service was abysmal.
It took a while for our server to show up to our table after we were seated. In fact, we had time to go out and take some pictures before she made an appearance. She introduced herself and explained that it was her first day on the job. We were prepared to cut her some slack. She took our drink (Robert Baker) and appetizer order (Seafood Parfait, Bacon Wrapped Scallop). The pitcher of water she had with her was left on our table. However, we never received any water glasses. A couple of other servers checked on us, and we finally asked one of them to get us water.
We watched our server be attentive to two other tables while we patiently waited for our appetizers. One of the tables was on the other side of the window from where we were seated which made it easy for her to check on our table without even approaching our table. There was no excuse for the level of service she gave us.
Finally, my wife went to the host station to complain. Jordan, the person who was "front of house" for the day saw my wife and asked her what was going on. My wife explained the situation and threatened to leave. Jordan offered to comp our appetizers which was appreciated. A while later Jordan came to tell us that the appetizers had not been ordered, that the scallops were no longer available, and we were getting a new server, Amos. I had to switch to a Caesar Salad. When she brought the salad, she told us that our orders had not been placed. She promised to rush it. We order (Salmon and Fettuccine, Breast of Duck). The food was very good which was the only saving grace of the experience.
It was unfortunate that it took two servers to try to make things right. By the way, our table was never cleared any of our dirty dishes and our menus sat there throughout the meal.
