   Love the food and the venue but not so much the over-use of American-isms by the waiting staff (who were otherwise very good). Being constantly referred to as 'guys' and being told that our choice of food was 'perfect' is a bit annoying, especially in a quintessentially English restaurant. Not that it spoilt our evening, but 3 out of 4 of us did comment on it.

   Called in for lunch during restaurant week, been numerous times before. Beautifully cooked food, a decent wine list, excellent, friendly service and an ambience in the old Friary that cannot be matched. The set menu was a bargain and no lowering of standards for the cheap deal. Every bit as good as most and better than some of the Michelin recommended restaurants in Newcastle, all of which I have visited.

    Had 3 course lunch off the Restaurant Week menu and it was excellent. Busy and very warm, the latter due in part to 30 degree temperature outside. Service was very good and overall very good lunch.

    In all my years of restaurant eating I'd never come across a bread and onion terrine, but it was splendid and showcased what an inventive chef was working in the kitchen. The rump steak, and the cheeseboard showed the same abilities, and allied to the knowledgeable and attentive staff, it made for a wonderful evening

    My partner always tells me that this is her favourite restaurant so when I saw it was available on the Restaurant Week, I surprised her with the table booking. My partner loves fish and for the starters, the only option she liked was the sharing platter. I’m not so keen on fish but said that I would try it out. Honestly, I’ve never had fish that good! The staff were amazing, really friendly and happy to help, even though it was the hottest of days. The whole meal was amazing, I realised after I ordered the rump steak that I hadn’t been asked how I wanted it. When it arrived, it was perfectly pink through the middle, succulent and exactly how I like it. If I had to say anything that wasn’t perfect, I would suggest that the water had ice in. We got a bottle at the beginning of the meal and it was already room temperature but that is literally the only thing I could say I wasn’t really happy with. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes good food and I’d suggest that they try the Eton Mess. It’s one of my favourites anyway but it was divine!

    Restaurant week so we chose from a set menu of three courses at lunchtime. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food was tasty and beautifully presented. It was a warm day but with the windows open Blackfriars felt quite airy. There is an extensive wine list, cocktails, soft drinks & spirits. The menu contained a couple of draft beers and bottles as well. A very pleasant experience all round.

    Food was good, wife’s cod a little over cooked - they also brought out mains before starters - busy so no problem about confusion. Staff very polite and it is a beautiful place to eat.

    Good food, but fairly small portions. Need to buy additional sides with main to make a meal. They add 10% for service on to the bill automatically which comes across as pushy. I always tip anyway, unless service is terrible. Lovely restaurant in a lovely setting. Drinks are expensive, not a great range of beers on draught.

    We started with cauliflower, cured sea bass and crab tartlet. The first two were fine, the crab tartlet wasn’t. A bought in little pastry case filled with a little white crab and top up with a custard like substance. The pea purée with it was OK but needed more seasoning. Main courses were lamb, pork and haddock (subbed for halibut), greens as a side. The greens were topped up with peas for no reason. The haddock portion was small and a bit over cooked. The lamb and pork were OK. Wine pricing was ambitious: £35 for a pretty ordinary bottle of Argentinian malbec. We agreed that the place wasn’t what it was and we wouldn’t be returning.

    Lovely visit today, food was beautiful as usual. The weather was good so we decided to pay our bill and take our drinks outside. We had an e voucher that we had as an email and printed which was a gift from my sister for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. This took 3 staff 15 minutes to sort out which spoilt the end of our meal when they asked many times to see the email. By this time our drinks were finished and the sun had gone in so we left.

    Sadly the afternoon tea has gone down hill a little. The wild hog sausage roll & chocolate cake are heavenly but the rest is very average. Some of the sandwiches were a dried out. The battenburg slices were the size of a postage stamp. I really didn’t enjoy the server trying hard to push the sale of additional drinks. It was an uncomfortable experience. I’ve been before but I won’t be returning.

    I have visited this restaurant a number of times over the last 10 years and it has always been our favourite. However it just missed the mark in everway yesterday (maybe it was an off day but the food and service was not the usual standard). We took friends and had built this as one of the best restaurants they will ever experience and it just wasn't the same. I will be back and hope it's just a blip.
