Best RAMEN in DC!
The atmosphere is adorable. Everyone was friendly & helpful. The ramen was very good, but the boozy dumplings stole the show. Extensive cocktail list & good choices of wine and beer. Overall very nice experience.
My wife and I wanted ramen and had a great meal here. The service was wonderful, and they do a good job with the ramen. Would come back!
I think one of the best Ramen in DC area. Good house kneaded noodles.
We really enjoyed Chaplins! The service was excellent from start to finish. Our waitress altered us we still had a few minutes left for Happy Hour, and even pointed out some tastier versions of our first order to us so we could adjust. Timing was perfect, not rushed but didn't take forever. Craft drinks, appetizers, and ramen dishes were superb!
Wonderful dinner and atmosphere!
One of the best places in DC by far. I come every time I’m in town and they have never disappointed.
I made a reservation on open table 45 minutes in advance. When I arrived they said they had no table and I would have to wait 45 more minutes.
Chaplin's continues to impress me with their Ramen. I lived in Japan for 4.5 years, and very few ramen places actually carry Tan Tan Men. a must have.
Phenomenal! Always a great spot to take family members or dates.
Brought my family from out of town here for some Ramen and they were very happy with the experience. Food was decent and portions were large, however the Ramen was a little bland (if you get the veggie shio) and my guests regretted adding chicken to theirs as it was a lot of meat. I had the Chaplin A.S.S. and it was really flavorful and spicy. Wasn't the biggest fan of the pork in it because it was a large portion and difficult to eat (large cuts). Next time will order it meatless as it didn't really add anything special to the dish and I ended up picking it out. The traditional gyoza's (ordered pork and veggie) were delicious and come in orders of 6, which is awesome!
Overall was a really nice dinner but a bit too much of a bar scene and not really a family restaurant since the music was quite loud. Will come back again but perhaps as a date night instead of family gathering.
Chaplin is always a sure bet for ramen and drinks with friends! Service is usually speedy and attentive. It can get loud inside, but other than that it should be your go-to spot!
It was my last night living in DC (after 6 years) and my mom was in town to oversee the move. Chaplin’s has been her fav DC restaurant since she first visited- it was the perfect dinner to end my time in this city. Service was fantastic, wine selection was great, and I’m so happy my last night in DC was at Chaplin’s.
Waiters & waitresses are very friendly. I love the food and drinks. One of my favorite restaurants in DC!
It’s my second time and the Ramen is A-1
Chaplin's is a great place if you're looking for some great comfort food. From their ramen to their fried chicken, this place has a lot to offer.
Ramen was tasty and service was great. Food took longer than anticipated to come out but either way, still delicious! Noise level is kinda loud and very dark atmosphere.
Excellent per usual.
After reading the reviews, I was prepared for a great experience. However, the food wasn't bad but it was nothing special. I will not be returning here as there are tastier restaurants around.
Waitress rushed us the whole time. Not very pleasant
I came here on a Sunday night with a reservation, they are definitely necessary because the place was packed. The staff was very nice and there was a fun ambiance, although the noise was kinda disturbing. They play their music very loud and together with the noise from the other guests, it doesn’t create a relaxed dining experience. The food is delicious though, I had pork dumplings and spicy chicken ramen, both very tasty and unique! Their cocktail list is nice as well but the drinks are expensive, they often cost more than your main dish which is a bit silly.
Super accommodating... we had an excellent time
Ok, so this place looks cool and has an energetic vibe inside. The problem is that it is so loud you can hardly hear the person in front of you. This might be OK if the service and food were good, but both just suck. The food is pretty awful and way too costly for such a bad attempt at Ramen. The "buns" are the worst I have ever had and the Ramen is nothing special yet costs like it should make you see heaven. Lets get to the crappy service. It took 15 minutes just to get a drink order and then our server disappeared. We had to flag someone down and force them to take our order. Maybe this place is so popular because of a mass mindset that it "has to be good".....but its not, its simply not good at all. Save yourself the earache and tasteless food experience and hit a hole in the wall Ramen place that costs half as much with ten times the flavor.
Would have given it a 5 star overall but the service was really slow. Apps, dinner and dessert for four took 2 hrs. It was the typical service pitfall. Service was ok through dinner but after dinner through dessert to getting the check took Forever. Ended up taking dessert to go because we needed to leave. Ramen, dumplings and dessert [albeit in the car!] were awesome though. Will go back.
Always have a great time here - fantastic HH and great patio!
This is the second time that I have been to Chaplin’s and waited almost two hours for my food. I was there for my birthday with friends and the service was AWFUL! Our reservation was at 7:30, we ordered appetizers shortly after. Not one plate of food hit our table until almost 9:30. The manager blamed it on a glitch in the kitchen system. Two hours for appetizers is unacceptable. They did bring us drinks to apologize, but still charged us for the apps. Not right. Like I said, this is the second time this has happened to me. Will not be back.
Meeting with old friends
Fantastic as always!
Aside from a pretty annoying first impression upon arriving (a jarring push into the entrance window from the server with no apology and seemingly never even aware of it) as it had just started raining right at our arrival and she mad-rushed outside to one of her tables, Chaplin is a great little spot.
The food here is outstanding. The few things we had (chicken katsu (!!!!), chaplin ramen, pay day (whiskey injected at the table!!) and the yakibuta platter) were all fantastic.
Our table was awesome - in a corner upstairs and tucked away against the window. Even still (and maybe I'm just becoming an old curmudgeon), I could barely hear my friends across the table. I don't love having to work that hard to have a conversation.
It's worth the food though, so go!
First visit to Chaplin’s after multiple friends recommended and after it took 10-15 minutes to be seated, the service was horrendous. Every member of our party only had 1 drink in 1+ hours because the server never came back around. Food was excellent but will have to consider my next visit based on the service.
Our meal was good and the vibe was great. The service overall was not good. First, they called to confirm the reservation, told me not to be late and hung up. Next they completely rushed us throughout the meal. I would not suggest going there if you want to spend more than an hour and enjoy your meal.
Looking for a place to dine later in the evening after a concert, Chaplin’s was recommended by a friend & there were good reviews on restaurant websites. As many reviews commented, the restaurant is LOUD, dark & crowded. There was a 30 min wait for outdoor seating even if you made a reservation. No problem, we had a reservation & dined inside. Service was a bit slow. It appeared there was just one waitress in our area. The food was OK but I live in an area with an extensive Asian population & I have tasted better & more authentic. I think this place appeals more to a younger, louder, gourmet martini drinking crowd. You certainly can’t carry on a decent conversation. You can barely read the menu in the dark.
Poor service, had to ask for things multiple times. Arrived an hour early and stood at the bar, only to get sat 15 mins after our reservation.
Birthday and pre-show dinner
Good food, good service and excellent quality.
Favorite restaurant in DC. I am there almost every week with a bunch of friends. The drinks are amazing, that staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and the ramen is great. I regularly recommend this restaurant to people and they always fall in love with it after trying it.
I had booked a table via Open Table and specifically ask for a table on the terrace. When we arrived our table wasn’t ready and we were asked to wait which was fine since we arrived 15 mins too early. We had a drink at the bar while waiting. Upon arrival I asked if they had made sure that we’d get a table outside and the person who greeted us said yes. When it was time for us to get seated they wanted to give us a table inside. That was a little confusing but they quickly looked for a table outside for us. We had to wait another 10 mins.
We were seated and received the menus. After 15 mins nobody came to take any orders for us. Apparently there was a miscommunication and the waiters weren’t sure who was going take care of our table. It was packed due to the nice weather and there were only 3 people for the whole terrace. I do not remember how many tables there were but there were several large groups. The waiters worked as fast as possible. Our waiter apologized and was very kind despite the stress.
The food was very good and the pricing reasonable. I picked the Chaplin’s A.S.S. which was spicier than expected but still very good. They also have gluten-free option even though there are not a lot.
Overall, I recommend this restaurant. We had a great evening. :-)
The food at Chaplains is always a hit. We had dinner with our friends here during their weekend visit from NYC. We try to hit up ramen spots wherever we go together since we’re all obsessed. Whilst the food here is great we always find the noise level to be uncomfortable.
Great food, cool outdoor space, meh at best service (I don't care how busy it is - most DC places w great food are busy). Go for the ramen and enjoy some cocktails. Just don't expect prompt service.
