Terrible, I placed a reservation and was confirmed via email the day before and a couple hours before until we got to the restaurant and it was closed.
Making the reservation was easy. The hostess was very welcoming. We had a service dog & were not questioned about it & was sat at a very nice table by the window. The porter was polite & personable as was our server. One of my guests ordered the lamb chop medium rare & it came out well done. The other guest ordered the lobster risotto & the lobster was way over cooked. My tortellini was delicious, even though I had it boxed to-go & ate it later. I didn’t want be rude to my guests who chose not to order a different entree or have their orders remade. The manager was genuinely apologetic & even brought a piece of tiramisu for us to share because she felt so badly about the poor food. It could have used more Kahlúa. We paid for & enjoyed our cocktails, wine, & bruschetta. Those ended up costing almost $200, for which I tipped our server $40 & assured him we understood he didn’t cook the food & it wasn’t his fault even though he apologized several times. Having been a captain in a fine dining Italian restaurant for several years & a business owner myself, I am accustomed to paying top dollar for quality food in a fine dining atmosphere. Had we enjoyed our food, I would say it was worth the cost. However, given the poor quality of the food, I don’t feel good about paying nearly $200 for drinks & appetizers & one pasta dish. We chose this restaurant based on the reviews as it being the best Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter. I want to believe this was an anomaly due to the current COVID-19 crisis & that they can hire a professional chef once businesses are allowed to return to normal operation. In the meantime, they may want to consider lowering their prices or limiting their menu options. Observation: No other tables complained about their food while we were there. Maybe it was a fluke or maybe our standards are different. This was our experience, nonetheless.
My wife and I have been here several time. Great food always very consistent. Fantastic and professional service. It was nice having dinner and a quiet restaurant. Again, terrific meal.
Authentic Italian restaurant .... good service ... good food
Our dinner at de'Medici completely met expectations. We chose to sit inside because it was so romantic and beautiful. The service was top notch all around and the food authentic and delicious. We couldn't have asked for a better evening! They made us feel safe, comfortable and welcomed. Great evening!
We enjoyed our dinner at DeMedici very much and they were adhearing to all
Covid regulations. They have a happy hour now and we also took advantage
of it. The food was very good and they also have outside dining now.
The food at de Medici was excellent. They had the best Tiramisu I have ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot.
great place great food
Service wasn’t great, but we like the food and location. We have come here several times over the last 10-15 years.
One our favorite SD restaurants. We host an annual event there and Sal always treats us as old friends.
We always enjoy dining at de Medici. It is one of our favorite Italian restaurants, with it's old-school vibe and great ambience.
Excellent food, ambiance, and service! I love this restaurant!
I had a really good experience overall! The service was great and the workers were all very kind and attentive. My only advice would be not to order pasta. I paid $26 for tortellini and the portion was extremely small. I would strongly recommend a pizza or another dish! Definitely check this place out if you’re in the gas lamp.
Returned for our wedding anniversary, ordered same meal as always: signature sole dish, crispy calamari, and lobster bisque - all very good. Missed the cloth tablecloths and elegant service of the past, but was still good.
The service was fairly good, the ambience very good, how ever the food was not that good. Overall I give the experience only One star. After all you go to a restruant for the food!
The food was absolutely fabulous and our waiter was outstanding. We definitely look forward to going back there in the future
Family get together food was excellent & we eat outside it was pleasant. Service was very good but took awhile to get main meal but once they came it was excellent!
Great food and great service. I have coming here for many years. Love the food and the people.
Awesome food so delicious! Our server was so nice And had great energy! Can’t wait to come back next time I’m in town!
The veal Parm was fantastic! Broiled Steak and lobster tail, perfectly cooked. Ou Martini's were spot on. The Veggies we had were also very good and seasoned individually ( spinach, carrots, mushrooms and asparagus ). Also had the Carpaccio...very nice. Had the Cannoli and berries with gelato for dessert. Delicious filling with a perfectly crisp shell. I don't think we had the best waiter, not super attentive, but some of the more seasoned staff jumped in when they saw we may be lacking. For two it was about $240.00 with 2 martini's each, but we had the most expensive items , appetizers, sides and desserts.
Will I go back ? Cant wait.....Oso Buco . And, if it matters, my name ends in a vowel. :)
Our 37th anniversary dinner! Steak and lobster excellent! Pasta very good! Chicken parm, superb!
This is an awesome experience. My family and I go there each time we are in San Diego.
Food was excellent. Service impeccable. Followed COVID safety standards very well.
Food & service were fabulous! We were blown away by the veal parmigiana. The lobster ravioli were flavorful and the marinara divine. The owner was there checking on the guests and ensuring all was right with the meal. Unfortunately we were sitting in the street because of CV19, but it was very well put together.
Highly recommend this place.
First time there and we will be back. The service was great and food was excellent. Not to mention the martinis
The best veal parmigiana ever! Also wine presentation was very impressive
From the minute we walked in the door we were treated like royalty for our anniversary! Food was outstanding!! Highly recommend!!!
The service was excellent. The food was delicious. We ordered pasta dishes and all the pasta was suberb.
If you order a cocktail you don’t want it delivered with your appetizer. When you still eating your appetizer you don’t want your main meal brought to the table.
This place is no better than a fast food chain restaurant. The food was basic. The Wedge salad was brown on the centre. The Lasagna was nothing to write home about. The Chicken Masala was sweet, very sweet. How strange. The food was barely warm and the vegetables were over cooked.
We had to tell the waiter several times that we would finish our wine and order coffee and dessert after the wine. We didn’t want it jammed in front of us like the rest of our meal.
The interior was tidy but tired.
Would we go again? Nope.
The BEST veal parmigiana in the city!! Been here a dozen times and it never disappoints.
Veal chop Parmesan was amazing!
Amazing service. Food was excellent. Lobster Thermador was out of this world.
Juan was an awesome waiter.
Great location for a business dinner! Excellent food, too!
Had six people and bought six different meals and everybody loved what they had. A great meal.
Food was delicious, particularly enjoyed the bread service. The lobster thermadore was amazing.
Outstanding! Steaks were great! Lobster tail was a bit dry but huge and very tasty. Service impeccable! We’ll be back!
Amazing food, owner Sal walks the floor greeting guests, reminded me of an old Italian restaurant in NYC!
Perfect service for a customer dinner. Quiet restaurant & the food was very authentic. Will go again.
The owner and servers were so welcoming -- wonderful ambiance and service. The Caesar salad was very good, but pricey. The Pomodoro was very good, but two other (Vongolle and Meatball marinara were just fine.
Went there for a pre-show meal based on the ratings and I was not disappointed. Very nice service and took the recommendation of the waiter. We had cioppino and shrimp pasta. Excellent!
