Downtown Grill - Macon
We went for the first time and were excited about the experience. We were placed in their back room which is closed off from the rest of the restaurant. It was very quiet and awkward around the other tables. I would go again but request not to be sat in that room. It ruined our experience.
Really great food, staff, and atmosphere.
We were put in a back room that didn’t match the rest of the restaurant. It was disappointing
We had one of our favorite servers, which always gets the evening off to a great start. She paced everything perfectly and the food, as always, was perfectly prepared and delicious. We had a great evening. What’s also great about Downtown Grill is the fact it’s popular with folks on expense accounts and large parties, but it’s laid out in such a way that it never interferes with our ability to enjoy a night out. Highly recommended for a fun night out.
Our server was just as amazing as the food! Sarah's explanations of the items on the menu made each one sound incredible. I wanted to eat everything on the menu. Our meal was a birthday celebration and it was beyond delicious. We will be back again to try more dishes. Thanks for a great night!
Great service!!!! We added a lot of people at the very last minute and the staff did an amazing job at accommodating us! They were extremely gracious and, as always, the food was wonderful!
We tried this restaurant for the first time Friday night before a concert at the nearby Macon Auditorium. It's a little hard to find using GPS, but definitely persist. It's worth it. Turns out the do have valet parking, which we did not realize.
The setting is old-school, but kind of cozy. The service was outstanding. Our server timed everything perfectly to get us to show on time and did a great job guiding us to some really tasty choices. The menu is extensive and full of a great variety of meat and seafood dishes. The craft cocktail menu and wine list are also quite good. Will definitely find an excuse to go back here when next in Macon.
The food was wonderful, just like it usually is! The service was good. We were celebrating my birthday, and they offered a complimentary desert, but we were too full!
We were a table of 6. Made reservations through open table. The valet was a little slow. Only one attendant. We were seated timely. We ordered appetizers and drinks. The crab cakes were more breading than crab, and the sushi grade ahi Tuna was overcooked. The cheese board with the bread and honey was great. We all had steaks and 4 were cooked perfectly and 1 a little overcooked but delicious. The salad and spinach were excellent but the broccoli was overpriced. 1 small portion over 5.00. The green beans were very salty.
The service was good but not very attentive. This was a birthday as noted on the reservation. No special attention for the occasion. The Dessert we had was creme’ brûlée’. Good dessert but I prefer more of a custard versus pudding texture. The coffee tasted burnt. One person was taking leftovers. The waiter offered to box it but never retired with it and we eventually left.
My only complaint of the ambiance was you have to walk through the smoke filled (cigar) bar to get to your table.
Our bill was over $500 which was a little more than expected expected but wasn’t necessarily a negative. The tip was included. I would over tip If not, but since it was included that’s all that was left.
I would probably try at least one more time.
Excellent fish and steaks, great service. Smoking allowed at the bar and you have to walk through the bar to the restaurant.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. We will be back.
Very enjoyable meal, great selection of wine too. Shannon was our server, very personable and offered great recommendations for our meal. This is a definite when in Macon.
This is a unique venue, down an alley in an old building with lots of character. To get to the dining area you walk past a smokey bourbon bar into a leather accented restaurant area. The menu has good american fare variety, heavy on the daily specials.
I have eaten here 4 or 5 times in 2019; it varies from good to extraordinary. 2020 started off really good.
Second time coming. I had the Elk, which was very tasty( and pricy) wish there was more of it though. Sides were cheese grits soufflé, asparagus and a Caesar salad, which were excellent. Appetizers- crab cakes and grit fritters- delicious. Service was on point, (great job Erin!)The only thing was this obnoxiously loud talking table right next to ours, everyone else seemed annoyed as well. But except for that, it was awesome. I’ll be back ASAP. Definitely top 5 restaurants in Macon/Bibb.
Downtown Grill is our favorite place for special occasions. This visit did not disappoint!
It's a very nice place we go to for special occasions. It is pricey but food is delicious.
Worst New York strip ever served to me. Tough and flavorless.
Excellent if I had to sum it up in one word. My wife and I arrived a little early (before opening), and were invited to wait at the bar. We were greeted by a bartender that knew about every aspect of the restaurant. We found out he also spends time in the kitchen helping with cooking, so he had incredible knowledge of the menu.
Our waiter also explained the menu in great detail. Rarely have I had such an informed decision in what I ordered.
This is a place everyone should try. The history...the building (hidden gem)...everything.
There were a couple of things that kept the experience from being perfect, but wouldn't keep us from dining there again.
1) We were seated in a small dining room. It filled up quickly, and became very loud. My research made me believe the setting would be a little more intimate. I felt like we were dining with everybody in the room. The problem was with me, and my expectations . It wouldn't keep me from easily choosing to return.
2) The booths were incredibly small. This is what kept me from making my rating 5 star.
I hold comfort at a high premium, and I'm difficult to make comfortable.
Ask for a table over a booth if available .
The food was fabulous! The service was superb and the atmosphere was intimate! Overall it was a wonderful dining experience.
I am a repeat patron of Downtown Grill in Macon, GA. My associate & myself dine there on almost every trip to Macon, and usually have parties ranging from 4 to 6 persons. Until our most recent visit on December 3, 2019, we have always held Downtown Grill above all others in food quality, service, and ambiance. On this night, our service was slower than normal, but that could be a staffing issue, and our server was as nice as I have come to expect.
Unfortunately, the cook COMPLETELY FAILED on 2 of 3 steak orders. My wife ordered the bone-in filet cooked Medium, and I ordered the Heart of Ribeye cooked Medium-Well. Both steaks were served RAW! - not rare, raw. We intended on asking for them to be cooked more, but the waitress did not return until we were pressed for time just to make our next engagement, therefore we could not wait any longer. We had been seated for 1 hr 45 minutes before served, only leaving 15 minutes to eat before our next event.
In addition to the lack of cooking temperature, Linda's filet was horrendous. It must have been the end of the tenderloin because it was completely full of gristle, which is not found in most filets. She was unable to cut a clean slice and most of the steak was completely torn, yet remained fully attached by gristle and such... My Heart of Ribeye appeared to be a good cut of meat, but it was completely raw and the 2 bites I was able to eat took forever to chew.
We finally caught the attention our waitress when it was time to pay our checks, and too late for additional cooking. We showed her our complaints and she agreed they were raw and especially that Linda's filet cut was bad. She reported to manager and removed the filet from our bill due to the bad cut of beef, but there was nothing that could be done regarding the raw meat at that point... I informed everyone that I was not asking for a discount, but appreciated their attempt to reconcile.
Great food, great wine, great service!
Good as usual. Menu doesn’t change much, but it may not have to change. The trout was excellent.
This is our second time there, and each time is just as good as before. The food was great, and Blake, our server was great. We were celebrating our 2nd anniversary and we would definitely recommend downtown grill for any special occasion.
Great customer service and outstanding food! We will be back!
Downtown Grill does not disappoint. Every time I dine here, the service, the coacktas, the selection of wine, the meals - always exceed my expectations.
Wife’s birthday! The food is always great and the atmosphere is quiet.
Outstanding meal, one of the best I’ve had in the Macon area for awhile.
I come to Macon on business every three month .since discovering this place three months ago I have been 4 times. Wonderful food friendly service. In a hideaway on an alley downtown. Highly recommended
Food and wine are always consistently good. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful especially one of the wait staff -I believe his name is Adam. Ask for him and count on a great experience.
I would absolutely recommend Downtown Grill! My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary and Erin took such good care of us! Every bite of food we had from our appetizer to dessert was delicious! They didn't even charge us for the dessert since it was our anniversary! Best food, service, and restaurant in Macon!
I was very surprised that mainstream domestic beer was not served (aka, Miller Lite). On top of that, the alternative (Michelob Ultra) had not been near the cooler prior to our arrival, plus they only had 6 total in the building. Otherwise, the service was great and the food was outstanding. I was a little embarrassed after bragging so much to my friends about how great Downtown Grill is.... The plan was Great Steaks and ice Cold Beer before a terrific show at the Capital Theatre. We got the first part right.
Staff, service, and food were exceptional as always! Looking forward to our next visit.
Was hard to find . Food was good , very nice atmosphere and not noisy. Very nice menu and great for both special occasion or nice regular dinner evening with friends.
Great waiter! Very patient with all our questions. Good wine list. Excellent food choices.
We were celebrating our 50 yr. wedding anniversary. Our waitress was a young woman named Shelby. She was most courteous, and attended to our every need, without being intrusive. She was a blessing.
Our server was the best we have ever had. I cannot remember her name. We had reservation for 645 Friday, September 27. Under Nichols. She was spectacular.
I had some out of town guests from Baltimore, who are steak enthusiasts. They thought the food was outstanding. And it was. The service was great! The waiter was knowledgeable about the food and wines. I felt good that my guests were awed by this restaurant!
My wife and I celebrated her recent birthday at Downtown Grill this past Saturday. We did not let the restaurant know because we do not like to draw attention. We had a wonderful, quite meal. The service was equally impressive! Good on you Downtown Grill! Perhaps I will try the Elk if available on the next visit!
It’s great for a date night; however, it is expensive. The drinks were smooth and the food was delicious. They made me the best scallops I’ve ever had, and the service was impeccable. I didn’t feel rushed, and the waiter (Blake) made me feel like he genuinely enjoyed being there.
We enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly staff, great waitress (Shannon), delicious steak and dessert.
