Housed in a beautifully restored 1912 firehouse, Engine Co. No. 28 located 3 blocks from the Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention center has been putting out appetite fires since 1989 with classic American dishes inspired by the regional cooking of firehouses across the country.

The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, crispy hand-breaded fried chicken, a burger to remember and a great assortment of handmade cocktails, a consistently updated wine list, and a great draft beer selection.

The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, granite bar, and original brass fire pole with eclectic old filament light bulbs to add to the motif.

    Everything tasted horribly salty!! and I love!! salt but the salt ruined the taste for everything. I have never had Hummus that tasted like you were eating a whole spoon of salt. Could have been the pita bread as well. Caesar salad was horrific one was able to taste every anchovy, again heavy handed an overkill. Everything was overly salty?? Salmon and Risotto was absolutely delicious although the mashed potatoes were again too salty. I felt ill after eating, and throughout that night. Needless to say couldn't sleep after that lunch. Not a good thing.

    The morning of our reservation, the restaurant cancelled. I thought it might be a mistake, so I rebooked. They cancelled again. I called and got a recording that the number had been changed and no new number was available. Not sure why Open Table still has them in the system.

    I as allowed to make a reservation and when we went to restaurant it was closed. Looked like it happened been open in days. Still said open on goggle.

    The cobb salad with dijon mustard dressing was a little bland. Thr meat loaf had an off taste, like chili con carne. Caesar salad was really mediocre, should take it off the menu. The restaurant does not have any bread yo serve with the meal. Service was very attentive, water glasses were kept filled and all requests were promptly addressed.

    It was my first time there and during lunch it was not too busy. I was there with a small party from work, a total of 6. Our server was nice and did her best to come around. It did feel like they were a little short-staffed though. We arrived about 15 minutes late for our reservation but still had to wait a few minutes for them to find us a table. I did call ahead to let them know we were running behind. They have a nice menu with a variety of options. Our group had the Cobb salad, Turkey burger, Korean chicken sandwich, Philly Cheesesteak and Ahi tuna salad and they tasted great.

    My first post covid visit. I had the Cobb Salad and my colleague had the chicken piccata. Portions were very small given the price. My salad was OK but rather unimaginative. Not sure I'll be back.

    Excellent food and service. We were all members of the “clean plate club”. Great lunch and good conversation over the classics: Caesar salad with salmon, meat loaf, fish n chips and the artisanal grain salad.

    Our server was great. The food was good. But they got rid of the valet parking which was a turn off for me. We had to park down the street and walk. It was pretty much empty considering it was on a Saturday evening. Not sure if I'll be back.

    Read the negative reviews, then double that! I really love historic architecture, so I went for the ambience despite the terrible reviews. I made a reservation for an event that included bottomless mimosas, brunch, and live music. I got there and was told the event had ended long ago, but was packed. Brunch was not even available any longer. I ordered the drink special. It was nasty. Then I ordered my food and was told one of the sides was unavailable. After waiting for my food, I was told the main I had ordered was unavailable. There were only two other customers in the whole place, and they were drunk and loud. Horrible experience!

    The DineLA menu is terrific. They even split the soup order for the two of us. Above and beyond attentive service. The food is exceptional as always and the atmosphere cannot be beat.

    The restaurant only had ONE waiter/bartender who had to do everything for at least 20 full tables during DineLA. He did the best he could with 1 busboy helping and he apologized a few times. We waited about 45 mins for our appetizer, then at least another 30 mins for our entrée after we were finished with apps. Ridiculous, but again, not the waiters fault

    Uneventful lunch. Food overall was sub par. Our party of 5 ordered a variety of dishes. We ordered appetizers. Nothing tasted delicious except for the Brussel Spouts. I ordered the burger- bun was over toasted ( hard ) meat under seasoned no flavor. Other plates were equally disappointing. Service was great and attentive. Prime lunch hour and place was practically empty.

    The food was good but a bit pricey for the amount of food. Quality was good. Our booth had ripped seats (there were may other available booths) and the server practically dumped my food off the plate when the food was served. The dessert special was not as advertised-it was supposed to be chocolate lava cake. it was not hot, actually felt like a defrosted Costco brownie.

    Server/hostess/bartendress Justice did a great job. We love the food. It's comfort food, yes, but the portions are reasonable. Environs are interesting and spacious. Booths are nice & quiet. We had the braised short ribs & tuna tartare salad. We were both very pleased with the entrees. It's unusual for me to rave about the vegetables, but the root vegetable side was fantastic.
