My favorite breakfast spot in Frederick. Delicious food! Love that they rotate menu based on season.
we are big fans of Family Meal but lately have gotten so so service and overcooked food. there's always a reason...change in shift, sitting outside vs. inside. not sure we will return
We often have breakfast at Family Meal (always outstanding!) but treated ourselves to lunch. The burger made my husband quite happy and I loved the roasted beet salad. We shared the onion rings— I think the best we have ever tasted (even as I was skeptical about a corn flake coating but am now a convert.). The bacon horseradish dip that accompanies the onion rings should be a “carry home” item. It would shine on crudités, baked potatoes, grilled meats, you name it!
It used to be a treat to dine at this restaurant. The drink menus were creative, the food exciting. So we returned for our anniversary dinner to find a different sort of dining experience. First off, the menu is getting stale. No new choices, and the only seafood available (other than shrimp and grits) was catfish? The drink menu was ok, but my cider drink was nothing to crow about for $11, and my wife’s Long Island Ice Tea was average at best. The frittata was badly over cooked, nearly burned, and had no accompaniment other than two tiny grape tomatoes. However, the onion rings were delicious!
Worst of all, the noise level. With only an average crowd, we could barely hear ourselves talk. I will, however, give high marks to our server, whose name I believe was Jackson. An excellent job done under the circumstances.
Worst meal out that I have had for quite some time. The food quality and execution was absolutely NOT worth the cost. The proteins were over cooked, the fries were burnt, the pimento, mac-n-cheese was tasteless with almost no cheese and maybe 2 pimentos throughout..and the list goes on. Also, they were either out of, or "running short" on quite a few things.
I have been to this restaurant many times before and while the last time was not as good as the first couple times, I thought that I would try again; sadly, it has gone down hill even more. I really hope they get it together or lower the prices for the quality they are putting out.
Third time eating at Family Meal. I wish this place was closer to our house because we’d go often. Two double stack burgers, one regular burger, and I had the Nashville Chicken sandwich. All of us enjoyed the meal immensely.
Fries were excellent and I love the dipping sauce options. Pimento mac ‘n cheese was the one disappointing item we ordered. Nothing special and had no sign of pimento.
Excellent local beer options on tap.
Service was a bit choppy but probably because we arrived at a shift change time.
My husband and I had two friends to join us for breakfast. Except for my husbands meal we were pleased with our food. My husband ordered 2 eggs and got 3, plus the sausage was not edible. My hotcakes were delicious. I asked for more maple syrup and received it. We generally love Family Meal any time of day and frequent the restaurant. The noise level was high on Saturday morning and we were seated next to a table of happy men...noisy men, and even talking across our table and being heard was difficult. What can be done about the noise level?
Good food and great service !
I ordered Biscuits and Gravy, there were no biscuits. My wife's order of French Toast was very sparse.
Overall it is a nice place. Went during breakfast hours. The french toast was very different. Not sure what kind of bread that was. Reminded me of tofu. The thickness was like a harder sponge. The taste was not your traditional french toast taste either which made me sad. Certain parts you got some flavor, but, majority it was super bland and a lot of texture. For that reason, it was 4 star. It turned me off a smidge. Pancakes tasted great. No issues there. Coffee was on point and so was the cider. Server forgot about us but when we flagged him down he was nice. Server should also wait and see if anyone else needs refill before running away. It wasn't busy and the 2 times we had to go get him...my drink never got refilled and table was never asked/checked in on his end. Attentiveness needs a little help there
great food always and milkshakes/adult milkshakes are absolutely the must. Not a healthy meal but well worse it.
I had higher expectations for this restaurant especially since it's part of the Voltaggio brothers' restaurants. We had the deviled eggs, old bay wings and the fried chicken as appetizers. The wings were tasty but the fried chicken had no flavor, the meat was moist, but I was expecting to be wowed by what they are supposed to be known for...I ordered the pastrami sandwich since the waiter said they made it in house and put in a lot of effort to make it taste great, however, the meat was also very bland. I tried the classic burger that someone else in our table ordered and the meat itself was flavorless, even the bacon was lackluster. Perhaps my expectations were set too high, but I was certainly disappointed by the food...
Food was pretty good, not great. Server not having her best day, forgetting to bring food/drink items a few times. Not sure we’ll go back with so many other options in the vicinity.
It's upscale comfort food. Prices are a bit high for 'comfort food' but justified.
Always great food, but could be a little noisy and waters are changing way too fast. New waiters could be somewhere annoying. Adult milkshakes are so much fun ))
The overall experience is great every time. I was Disappointed in the catfish poboy though. As a native of Louisiana, it was mediocre.
Great food, wonderful service. A lovely time with friends.
Awesome first time experience. The blueberry pancakes were perfect. The omlett and crispy potatoes were freshly prepared and perfectly cooked. The fresh donuts, lemon meringue and cinnamon were a great take home treat. The service is what made it great all around. Our server Josh was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and really made it a memorable first experience. We will be back.
Family Meal is ALWAYS Outstanding. From the pot pie fritters to the catfish po boy. Lest I forget the duck fat fries. One of the easiest recommendations by far. The only easier Recommendation is Volt.
We really enjoyed our time at Family Dining. The food is simple American food prepared and presented perfectly. The ambiance is casual, the service spotless, and the prices reasonable. Our server (Jake S) was helpful, friendly, and attentive without hovering. We certainly intend to add this spot to our list of regulars.
Cute place! Breakfast foods seem to be their strength. My date was unimpressed with the Mac and cheese but overall, food was great, though definitely overpriced for certain items.
Great Saturday breakfast - what a pleasure to find a place to get a breakfast that’s not just ho-hum diner food or overpriced pastry and caffeine.
Good menu choices, nicely portioned, lots of flavor. Inventive takes on standards. Well designed clean space, brightly lit with natural light. Standout waffle/fried chicken, grits, egg burger and egg sandwich. Good cup of coffee and brunch cocktail options. We’ll return for sure.
While the food and service are very good, I did not perceive value. Based on the cost which, taking into consideration the location, ambience and lack of included sides, is about twice as much as is merited. While I would probably recommend this restaurant to a friend, I would first explain the inordinate prices.
Very good meal and service. Liked the half price wine and apps for happy hour!
We usually eat at Family Meal about once a month. Normally my review would be mostly positive. On this occasion however, one item of food was not up to Family Meal standards. I ordered pancakes with a side of sausage. The pancakes were excellent, though a little short on quantity of topping (minor shortcoming). The sausage however was not edible, being very dry, tough, and containing what I assume was a high percentage of gristle. I should have sent it beck but I decided not to.
Went on a busy Sunday and (fortunately) had made reservations. Got seated immediately. Service was great. Our server recited our orders (including brunch cocktails) and made sure to underscore our meals that were prepared with dietary restrictions (celiac). Great food. Will visit again.
Not thrilled with the lack of breakfast options. Nothing I couldn’t make at home. I’ll try again for lunch or dinner.
We go to Family Meal about once a week, and it's (almost) always great! We had the onion rings (legit the best you'll ever have), beet gazpacho, fried catfish, strawberry salad, and the smores dessert. That dessert was the best thing I've had at a restaurant in a long time. Family Meal chefs: please keep this one on the menu! Place is great for taking children too, and you can't beat the outdoor patio seating on a nice summer day.
Food was excellent as always. Staff was polite and attentive.
This was my second time eating at Family Meal. The food was good and the table service was good, however, the host seated our party at a table that was directly in the sun. It is difficult for me to believe that the restaurant has not figured out that late afternoon sun makes some of the tables uninhabitable even with the blinds down. The host had given us a mini-lecture on showing up with 1 more person than our reservation had been for despite the fact that there was plenty of seating. I wonder whether the host sat us at the "bad" table in response to breaking a reservation rule. They did move us after I asked to be switched. The staff just seemed oblivious to the obvious problem of the sunlight.
Booth seats are just wood with no cushions. Awfully uncomfortable. Limited menu for entrees. Service was great!
The food overall was not seasoned well - very bland. Half priced apps were a great deal! Made a reservation but not sure it was needed on a Friday night at 6pm. Tried the deviled eggs which had a tad too much vinegar, the pot pie balls were unimpressive in flavor, the onion rings were good, the fries were great!! Hoecakes themselves were good but the dip on side was to vinegary. The mac n cheese was not flavorful, the greens were bland although they had pieces of bacon in them. The catfish was okay but I did not like the cabbage and leeks - made the crust of the fish mushy too. Had the brownie sundae and felt the fruit sorbet on too of the ice cream was gross and too many sprinkles for my preference.
We met relatives for lunch. Great food, excellent service. Although we lingered for an hour after eating, we were not rushed and had a chance to catch up in a pleasant setting. The fried chicken was yummy as usual!
Felt very disappointed about the food. Ordered catfish, fried chicken, chicken and waffles, and shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were good but a small portion. The catfish and fried chicken dishes were not very flavorful and wouldn’t order any of them again. Good concept but poor execution of the food
Loved the place, and food. But, the service is alittle slow sometimes and my sister had to wait close to 30 mins after ordering for her omelet..when we all got our food on time.
Good service but horrible overpriced food and a very limited menu
We had a girls night dinner and sat outside. Nice covered patio area. We had the Pot Pie Fritters and the Deviled Eggs. Both were very good. I had the Double Stack burger which was exceptional.
It was Happy Hour so the appetizers and drinks were discounted. We all had cocktails which were very tasty. My only complaint was that when we ordered second drinks we realized it was just past the Happy Hour time. It would have been nice if the waiter would have prompted us just before happy hour ended so we could have ordered sooner.
Excellent as always
This is the 2nd time I've been to Family Meal and I just love it! I do wish you didn't have to purchase sides to go with your meal but it still is a very good meal.
