Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country cuisine. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. We also deal with local farmers to provide a great source of fresh farm vegetables to enhance your dining experience.

I ordered the meatloaf dinner and it was awful. The meatloaf was as thick as a slice of bread the potatoes were too thin and the collards had way too much vinegar in them. The place is so dark that you can barely see your food. The prices are way too high. I am a local here on Johns Island and I have given this place at least three chances. All of them were disappointing. I won't be going here again.

We were seated 45 minutes after our reservation. Also, our server was not the best. He kept forgetting items and needed to be reminded what we were fairing on.

We enjoyed our dinner so much at the Fat Hen that we ended up having lunch / brunch on the way out of town. We stayed at the Sanctuary and arrived a day before our gang so we went off Island for a little local flavor.

My husband and I are from Connecticut and this was our first time at Fat Hen. Everything was awesome. We got the Farmer's platter and crab soup to start. The Farmer's platter consisted of house cured meats accompanied by pickled veggies and fruit. So many unique and different flavors. Crab soup was buttery heaven. For dinner we had the meatloaf and the lamb shank. My husband thinks my meatloaf is better but I have to say I'd love the receipt for the collards. What did they do to them? So good. I helped my husband with the lamb shank. A very healthy portion! It was accompanied with veggies and cheesy grits. The combo was sooooooo good! Everything was great, but that shank was the best. Melted in our mouth! We couldn't get dessert. Too full. I would come back if we ever make it back to Charleston.

It was the first time I was here. Food was fantastic. They had great wine deals. Service was good. The table we were at was very small and I was pinned in near the door. I'm 6'5. Would have liked a little more room but all in all a great meal. Highly recommend.

This was definitely worth the drive out of downtown Charleston for a great brunch spot, even if we had to wait about 20 minutes for our Uber back to the hotel. The classic southern breakfast items with some of the more modern or inventive twists on the classics went really well together. My husband is still talking about how much he loved the country fried steak and the bacon cheese grits. It really was the perfect breakfast for him on our last day in Charleston. The french toast was also very good - even though I would have loved more strawberries - it was exactly what I was looking for. We started with the fried green tomatoes and they actually were the perfect way to start off brunch - not too big, but enough to tie us over while the kitchen worked on our entrees. If you are looking to go here for brunch, be sure to make a reservation. The wait without one seemed really long as many locals head here on Sunday mornings. So if you're visiting Charleston and staying downtown, be sure to make the 20 minute drive out to Fat Hen - your tummy will thank you when you leave full and very happy.

The food at The Fat Hen is so exceptional that it is actually surprising. The location is a bit out of the way on Johns Island. For visitors on Kiawah (as we were) it is a 30 minute drive. But it is worth driving. Our party had Shrimp and Grits, Coq au Vin, Lamb Shank, Crab Soup, Crab Cakes, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Collard Greens. Delicious!!! Even the Pommes Frites were great. Such a great combination of true low country dishes and French cuisine. Worth the drive and worth the wait (if you show up for dinner after 7:00 on a Friday or Saturday you will probably have to wait because it well deservedly packed.

Amazing food: grilled okra, shrimp and crab dish, fried green tomatoes, pluff mud cake). All was perfect. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly and made for an overall great time.

On a golf trip to Kiawah, we were fortunate to find the Fat Hen and gave it a try. Well worth the visit. Nine of us had dinner and all nine gave this restaurant two thumbs up. Appetizers and entrees were uniformly excellent and their wine list was more than adequate, to say the least. At our table of four, appetizers, entrees and a glass of wine each totaled out to $52 pp on a split check, plus tip. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Kiawah as an alternative to island dining, with the caveat that it's about a 20-25 minute drive.

I've been to the Fat Hen several times and always order their mussels in curry cream sauce. That's exactly what I wanted when we went for Sunday Brunch. Unfortunately, they didn't have mussels on their brunch menu and said they were not able to make them as a special request:-( The brunch menu was ordinary and the brunch food itself was ordinary too. The dinner options we've had there have been much much better. We'll definitely go back, but not for brunch.

Always love eating at the Fat Hen. Excellent menu and atmosphere. They always go the distance to ensure your dining experience is wonderful from beginning to end. They are especially accommodating and knowledgeable with gluten allergies/food sensitivities. Most of the best meals I've had in Charleston have been here.

Great food, if you are willing to try something different, you will enjoy the food at the Fat Hen. Atmosphere is very casual, golf shirt and shorts, or business casual mix well. Good meal for a fair price, service was excellent.

I have been to the Fat Hen for many years and it is a good casual restaurant. Using OT, I did not have to wait for a table which appears to be the modius operendei here so you will get a drink. The waiter was plesant but pushy. This was a date and we needed to talk. He had this habit of kneeling down to the table. This is not necessary since we are adults. The food was good but the mixed drinks a disaster. They really need to learn how how to make a Manhattan. Stick with the wine.
This is a small reataurant but the parking is a disaster all over the place on gravel which is not kept. The sign or Maybank Road needs to be freshened up since you can miss it if you were not a local. Money value good.

Excellent restaurant! Started with crab soup and seafood stew and we enjoyed both. For entrees, I had the pork chops and my wife had the crab cakes and both were delicious. Collard greens with my dinner was probably one of the best I've ever had at any restaurant. Was stuffed but ended up ordering the bread pudding (dessert special) and I'm glad we did as it was awesome!

This is my favorite restaurant in Charleston if not the world. Although a few miles outside of Charleston proper it is well worth the trip. The seared grouper over succotash is incredible. There are also gluten free and low cal options available. All are great!

very slow service not really busy took 15 minutes to get water and talked to.Mussels were way to salty and when food was brought out we were never checked on. I ordered the shrimp and crab and it came out looking like mush and extremely salty had to send back and reorder something else. Plus side manager apologized and corrected the issue. Our server was very slow and it seemed like our table was on the back burner as we watched other tables come and go with their very attentive server.

It was nice to see rabbit offered in two different creative ways. The entree was a little high on the price scale, but it sold out, so I must've been the only one to think so!
