The two female hostesses were smug, inattentive and even rude. There was no interest in greeting us (or clearly any others) or even thanking us (in this environment, two days before all LA restaurants were shut down) for dining out and patronizing. Yet they had ample time to gossip with each other and we overheard them bemoan other customers (who apparently annoyed them). Believe it or not there are people in Los Angeles (even in hipster places) who do this thing called SMILE ...God forbid they try this. Maybe they were hoarding facial muscular energy for coronavirus reserves. The food was consistently good (this time the cappuccinos were hot instead of cold) and there was one lovely male host (kind of Anderson Cooper type) seemed to be the day's manager--but even his skill and appreciated maturity couldn't gloss over the adolescent and smugness of those hostesses ...and we also overheard two other staff, presumably waiters, putting down their customers. Really...how hard is it to just be kind and realize at the end of the day your in a service profession--if it's not your skill set, don't work with people.
As always, an exquisite dining experience! I had never eaten brunch there and the coffee was spectacular.
Menus changes always make for interesting dining. Wonderful selection of wines by the glass. Thanks nay downside is the 20% imposed service fee, which is subject to tax. Why not increase the menu prices?
Good food, super noisy, wine list is mediocre, Venice overpriced place
Gjelina is one of the best restaurants on the Westside, and my favorite on Abbot Kinney!
Everything about the experience was fantastic! The staff was warm, attentive and knowledgeable and the food was extraordinary. Incredibly inventive and beautifully presented. What a delicious experience!
Good food in the nice heated backyard :) Recommended to friends and family!
Brought our food without any plates. It just sat there for 10 minutes. Asked for menus to order MORE food and they never even brought them.
The food is amazing. The service is fabulous. We love it here.
Delicious pizza (the side of dried oregano is amazing). Ambiance is also a big reason why I love this place. Great place to go on a date or catch up with friends after a long day or week!
Had lunch...Not a lot of Gluten Free options and chef is not flexible at making modifications
Great in every way-as always!
Very good food! But the ambiance and server was very “snooty”. A very well known place in LA was glad to check it out
The food was extremely salty and disappointing. I will not be going back.
(I sent my wife and best friend here for a celebratory lunch. Things did not well. Below is their review)
We so enjoy the fresh fare, attention to detail in each dish & combination of unexpected flavors at Gjelina’s. Very fresh & unexpected wine selection, too. Happily, partook of both at lunch on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, we had a surprisingly rude and unpleasant (almost deliberately so) server jerked us up short about just how much power your server has to ruin a lovely meal. Our server had none of the essential server requisites such as a smile, an introduction, recommendations. She also never asked if my girlfriend & I were familiar with Gjelina’s or had any questions. We were both surprised by how rudely (and monosyllabically) she answered our questions. She was almost insulting, & most undoubtedly snide, with her wine comments to us both.
When we inquired about your fries, she said their fries were skinny fries. We ordered them “well done, and no salt.” When they arrived, we let her know they were over-salted and not crispy or skinny. She argued with us, then swiped them off the table without a word, and we never saw her at our table again.
Everything else was delicious as always, but no inquiring if we liked anything or wanted to order more. We were served by an assortment of random, helpful, unknown staff. When the check came I asked the name of our original server & he said he didn’t know. On the way out, I asked someone else who seemed like a manager of some sort, and he told me her name was Rachel.
Paying 20% gratuity for three glasses of wine (worth $60) on top of Rachel’s very unpleasant, unfriendly service cast a lingering & disappointing pall over our celebratory day off.
NOTE: We truly enjoy Gjelina, and come as often as we can. This was a bad showing on your part.
too noisy! pizza was find but nothing special. wine not interesting
Overall the restaurant is okay. I had a problem from the getgo. I had a reservation for 2 but he refused to put us outside, even though we had a reservation. He wouldn't put us at a 4 top, for only 2 people. We had a reservation. We should have been seated first in our first choice. The host was rude and will prevent me from recommending or going back, which is a shame because our waitress was good and the food was really good. We were celebrating my daughter's recent promotion, which he never asked, and just said its either in this dark back room, in the corner or we would need to wait 45 mintues... what? the restauarant was not busy yet when we got there... most tables were empty.
Really nice restaurant. The food is amazing, but small portions for a lot of money. The cheese plate was good, but not great. The pizza was really good but again not amazing. Fun atmosphere but sort of crowded. It’s worth going to but it’s expensive and there are probably better restaurants on Abott Kinney.
As always Gjelina is a marvelous place for lunch on the patio. The food never fails and the wine selection is wonderful. Service was a little slow due to the busy day. But as always forgivable.
Best carrots I’ve ever tasted.
Went for brunch with friends. We had a very nice waiter, however, for the prices you pay, this place is just not worth it. They could not accommodate several of our requests and were even out of menu items. How do you run out of breakfast sandwiches??? Super over rated and a little full of themselves to be honest. Won't be back again.
The ambiance and food was delicious. Service was lack
Had a delicious relaxing breakfast with my cousin visiting from Chicago. We had a 9:45 am reservation and arrived early. We got seated right away. In spite of the popularity of the restaurant, we never felt rushed.
Breakfast was amazing! Service was impeccable!
Love Gjelina, ambience is great, food is fantastic, and their service is excellent.
It’s a very nice spot in Abbot Kinney, with music and good vibes (it was a Friday night). I was not expecting food to be so good as menu is very particular, but pizza is awesome and pasta plates as well. The only negative point I’d need to mention is that 20% gratuity is added on default to the bill BEFORE taxes are applied; therefore you pay taxes on a total which is already charged by 20% (which is also high as default tip percentage).
Overrated; the food is ok but expensive and wine isn’t that great
We tried a number of different items since this was our first time. The spring pea and buratta appetizer was great, as was the nettle and duck prosciutto pizza. The Brussels sprouts were only roasted on one side, which made them less appetizing. Also, the mushroom toast (which they’re supposedly known for) looked great, but the bread either wasn’t toasted well or the sauce they covered it with soaked it through, and was the only real flavor present - honestly skip this dish, not worth $18. The bolognese pasta with ricotta foam, however, was absolutely superb and I would recommend it wholeheartedly! Service was good and deserving of the 20% service charge, which is included on your bill. The place is seemingly completely full (and they will call you if you’re even 5 minutes past your reservation, so be on time) and the table we had was small but not overly so. Atmosphere is somewhat louder accordingly but again, not overly so. I won’t have a NEED to go back here, but that’s okay!
Love the food and attentive service
Pizza is amazing. The mushroom truffle was our favorite. Pasta was also delicious. It’s always packed in there but easy to see why.
