Superb seafood and excellent service.
Great fish—fries crispy and delicious! It’s been 20+ years since I ate here—will do it again
We have gone to the restaurant for years. Always great fish, perfectly prepared. Simple but very good.
The Hayes Street Grill is a warm, comfortable ambience, the service is efficient, and the food is of good quality. I return regularly and would definitely recommend it, especially for people wanting to dine before concerts, opera, ballet and other Civic Center events.
A classic San Francisco restaurant with delicious fish!
Third time in a row Ive been let down by Hayes Street Grill. I will not be returning, after having gone there for decades. Last visit, my reservation stipulated a table for four, one in a wheelchair. All was good until I appeared in advance of my party, only to be treated to loud sighing by the maitre d when I reminded him of the wheelchair and the need to be in the first room. He said it would be a problem to push two small tables together for our party of four, despite there being no one else in the place at 5:00. A rude, sarcastic response by the maitre d when I called to cancel a reservation happened this week. A few weeks ago, eating at the counter in the bar, my friend and I were served our food, then abandoned for close to an hour. When our plates finally were being cleared, a large amount of food dropped onto the floor and was deliberately left there. Hard to believe, but true, The reputation that Hayes Street Grill used to have is. alas, no more.
Everything was positive: food, service, ambience. A full house before symphony crowd, so noise level was up.
The usual excellent service! Our orders came very quickly, which was a surprise. As a result, the food was piping hot and just off the grill. The sea bass and salmon were both perfectly prepared. Just wish the portions were slightly larger for the price. I’d eat there much more often if it wasn’t on the high end - Almost $200 for a shared salad and dessert, plus two entrees, a cocktail and two glasses of wine.
A San Francisco classic! It hasn't changed all that much in 35 years -- and that's a good thing. Simple, classic dishes prepared flawlessly and served in a simple, friendly fashion. Great for lunch or dinner.
Helpful to know seating policy for early evening reservation.
always superb seafood in a perfect presentation; we go there several times yearly especially when shad roe and soft shelled crabs are in season
Consistently the best seafood in San Francisco, and always sustainably caught. Great place for dinner before concerts at Symph, Opera, Jazz Center, Herbst and Conservatory of Music. Or Hamilton, if you can walk a few blocks!
Disappointed that there were no appetizers to share but food was enjoyed by all.
We got here after an event just as the 60+ theatre crowd was clearing out. Food was fine, service was great, wine list left a lot to be desired. Not celiac-safe.
Good service & food was good although oysters were not available & Prosecco wasn’t available either
A preconcert favorite; but, it is great anytime for seafood, it’s specialty.
The service was marginal. The waiter brought a glass is wine with bright lipstick marks. He should have seen it. Service took forever. And very few people were in the restaurant. The waiter just didn’t pay attention. He was distracted
Hayes St Grill has been around for 40 years, and most of the clientele a LOT longer than that. It's clearly a favorite of the pre-opera/symphony/ballet crowd due to it's proximity to those venues. Service was quick and efficient, with a nod to our request to be in time for the 7:30 curtain. We ordered an old fashioned and a dirty martini - both very well executed, though I was not asked what kind of gin I preferred. I had the opah with buerre blanc and my husband had the steelhead salmon with the same sauce. Both were excellent. Each was served with house french fries which were nice and crispy. Dessert was a berry cobbler and that, too was quite delicious. If you want that old SF feel, great food and service and a short walk to cultural enrichment, you will do well to dine at Hayes St Grill.
Salmon and scallop served cold. Octopus and deserts were good.
Always a pleasant meal. The place is relatively old school - nothing trendy, nothing hip. Service is better than capable, food is prepared well, the room is comfortable. The prices are a little high, but the food is fresh and not overly complicated. In these days of SF restaurants trying too hard, Hayes Street Grill is a nice respite for a good dinner that satisfies but doesn't overwhelm - in a good way! Bartenders know what they're doing too. Where's the rosé by the glass though?
We enjoyed all that we ordered from appetizer to the dessert.
Still a good one after all these years. Business lunch for SF folks who know their way around SF dining. Everyone commented on how they had not been to Hayes Street Grill in years. We had a nice lunch, with friendly attentive service in a relaxed atmosphere. Parking is the only challenge to enjoying time at Hayes Street Grill.
Hayes Street Grill is and has been for as many years as it’s been here an absolute favorite of ours for reliably prepared fish (never dry as in most places) ; gorgeous creative salads; every morsel superbly delicious!
Waitstaff consistently efficient, quality, knowledgeable.
Perrrrrfection!
Excellent as usual for a post-symphony meal. Sherman did a great job!
I lived in San Francisco in the 70's and 80's. Hays Street Grill was a favorite. I have been telling our daughter about it and invited her last Saturday. Sadly, it was not the experience I expected. We both thought the meal was good (Petrali, mushroom soup and a smoked trout appetizer) but were both feeling "off" when we left. We were both dizzy and I had intestinal problems all of the next day. Additionally, the cost for two of us (~$240 with tip) seemed excessive given that we only had three glasses of wine between us. I am very uncertain I would come again or recommend Hayes Street Grill, which is very sad given my impression from years ago.
The restaurant is an icon for S.F. It has sustained throughout the years because of its aromatic flavors, consistent good food, and sizable portions. They have an excellent wine list. The service is impeccable and the location perfect if you are going to the symphony. The real hot fudge was a culinary dream. The soup, and the scallops left a taste for wanting more, with the memory lingering in my mouth. Cannot say enough good things. Hopefully Hayes Street Grill will be here for the next 20 years. Always a consistent dining experience, good fish dishes. Not cutting edge but good.
The Petrale sole special, with mushrooms, was outstanding.
The food and service were excellent.
Great service but a little slow.. Food was ok, overpriced. First time to try this restaurant and not planning on returning.
Hayes Street Grill is perfectly located for an evening at SF Jazz. The ambience and the service were
outstanding. However, we were disappointed with the food...the calamari appetizer was more white beans
than calamari...the petrale entree as well as the black cod with clams were okay but not outstanding. Generally, it was not the dining experience that we remembered from earlier visits.
A solid choice if you are in the area - SF Symphony Hall, Opera House, etc.
Outstanding goat cheese salad! Prompt service and well located.
Noise level was high but due to no fault of the restaurant since it was a pre concert packed crowd on a Sunday night. Part of my fish dish that is normally "under cooked" which I requested be done but not dried out came out still under cooked but the issue was remedied within five minutes. Wine by the glass pours are a bit skimpy. Everything else was five stars.
Great food. Fast service
Always good. Fabulous pet rake dole. Wonder calamari
Best fish restaurant in the city. Have been dining there since it first opened and have never been disappointed in the food and or service
Very professional in all aspects
Hayes Street Grill always can be counted on to prepare fish to perfection. Their specials are always paired well with vegetables that are interesting and well prepared. Appetizers and desserts were excellent as well.
Great experience
As good as always and so glad it’s still here. Service with
