Kona Grill - Arlingtonの評価
I want to like Kona Grill more, but they just put their prices up for happy hour - used to be $3.50 for happy hour small sushi rolls, now $5 - good deal still, but not the best sushi I've ever had. In the past when I've eaten inside - have had some good servers, but on the patio - the past 3 times I've eaten there the waiter we've had on the patio has been the least friendly and helpful waiter I've had. I guess if you sit in the happy hour area you don't get as good service as if you eat inside in the other area.
The name, "Kona Grill," brings-up visions of Hawaiian cuisine and decor, however, it doesn't deliver on either expectation. They occasionally add Macadamia nuts as a garnish to a dish. Disappointingly there was no any evidence of mahimahi, the signature fish in Hawai'i from drive-ins to haute cuisine. They did have a strong sushi section with original offerings (voodoo) and large servings. I'm afraid it is not destined for a return visit.
This is a large and varied menu. Appetizers were excellent. The fish special was also very good. The nut crusted chicken did not come out as well as expected. Sampled wines were good and we're reasonably priced. This was a Friday night and it was very loud.. Overall we had a very good experience that are likely to return when we come back to this area.
We had a great experience here.... very good atmosphere; great waiter; good drinks but the kitchen had a bit of a hiccup. Two of us ordered the fish special-- steelhead trout and it came out Luke warm at best. (Had clearly been sitting around on a counter waiting for the other meals to be prepared) . The manager and waiter were great-- comped one dinner that got recooked but I muddled through mine and I was enjoyable-- but would have been way better hot.
Recommend it still though.
For my group of eight people, we were seated at a good table where everyone could see each other, which was great and does not always happen. Unfortunately, our party had some problems with orders. One, we were asked about what our soy sauce preferences were and there were people who wanted low sodium and some who wanted regular. We were only delivered low sodium and at one point in the middle of our meal, a server asked to take one of the bottles. For a sushi place that was rather empty when we were dining at lunchtime, I expect the establishment to have enough soy sauce bottles to go around. We also had an incident where bacon was not left out of a dish and when the dish was re-prepped, it was obvious that the bacon had only been picked out by sight because there was still a considerable amount of it attached to the bottom of the protein choice in the dish. The remainder of the dishes were good and fairly priced, and the entire party thought the presentation of the meals was very attractive.
This was my first visit to Kona Grill, and it was delicious! The service was prompt and courteous, and there were a wide variety of mid-priced menu items from which to choose. I ordered chicken/shrimp lettuce wraps, and the server even gave me some extra lettuce leafs without me having to ask for them. Definitely one of the better restaurants in the Rosslyn area.
Great sushi and flat breads, everything else was just okay (fondue with pretzels and avocado egg rolls) or not even worth eating (dumplings were so bland, calamari was bland and very rubbery). It's obvious most food isn't made on site, comes in frozen and is microwaved - too expensive for tgat to be the case. They were out of a lot of drinks too.
We come to Kona grill fairly often and usually love the food and service. Our waitress was having a bad day and clearly made it known to the guests. They may have changed up recipes because some of the regular items we order seemed different. The cocktails were so-so. Perhaps it was just an off night.
My husband and I met another couple for dinner one weeknight. I had eaten lunch there and recommended we try it for dinner. We all loved the broad menu selection (warning: allow time to peruse - there's a lot to "digest" on both sides of the large menu!) which includes great sushi options as well as some uniquely prepared American fare. Definitely recommend the triple taco slider option in appetizers - it was a meal in itself, paired with one order of anagi (eel).
The only (slight) downsides to our delightful evening here were the ambient noise and the service. The noise was from the very large bar area, which was a "happening" place. If the main doors had not been opened to the dining patio it would have been almost unbearable; still we had to lean across the booth table to hear each other! The servers were uniformly friendly and generally attentive. However, our server was training someone which appeared to slow her down. We had to wait a long time for our cocktail delivery, and then again for her to take our order. We hope this was just an aberration for that evening; we will definitely return!
