We love this restaurant and have been going here for 20 years. The food is always fantastic and Monday was no exception. The escargot we started with was a delicious garlicy treat. My wife's duck was perfectly prepared and was melt in your mouth tender. My venison was equally well prepared. The Gratinee De Fruits Rouges was rich without being heavy. The perfect end to a wonderful dinner.
Love this place. Original. Great menu and excellent food. Staff is charming and patient. I try to eat here every time I am in Washington.
Spectacular. As always.
Solid French cuisine, although my duck must not have had a good day. Try the souffle...
We love this rustic French cuisine restaurant. The canelles are a must have and don’t skip the chocolate soufflé dessert. I’ve never been disappointed in the many visits I’ve had over the years. Great place for a date or group dinner. Even if you’re afraid of some French menu items like sweetbreads, calf brains, etc. they still have plenty of less exotic entrees to choose from.
A very solid restaurant representing a warm remembrance of finer French dining. The ambiance evokes a French country inn without the kitch posters or tin plaques that pass for "antiques" these days; this place is much more refined and casually elegant. The wait staff is genuinely pleasant and seeks to make the patron feel both comfortable and welcome. The food is lovely, well-prepared and presented; the menu offers a fine selection of first and second courses that any diner will enjoy perusing and you can't go wrong with any of the choices. Our deserts, the Grand Marnier souffle, was superb.
Nice country French decor. The Venison paired with the house St. Emilion was excellent. The apple tart for dessert is well worth the :20 wait. Service was good. I will return.
It’s so wonderful to have excellent service and food! The service was exemplary as was the food. The desert soufflé was “perfect”. The veal chop, outstanding. The ambiance is a little dated and if full, could be very loud. But we really loved it. It’s obvious they cater to their regulars. I would say to the wait staff, “smile”.
Excellent food and service. Hope to return soon!
I would recommend La Chaumiere to a friend but to go when it is not restaurant week. The offerings were good and the place is lovely but because we were there Restaurant Week the service seemed very rushed and the waiter seemed unhappy that we were ordering from the special menu. To be fair it is probably more work and lower tips for this week, but maybe the place would have been less full without this incentive. I noted the reservation that it was our anniversary but no notice by anyone seemed to have been taken. No congratulations or glass of champagne was offered. Maybe they are better with this at less crowded times.
Busy but great service and food during restaurant week. Will happily visit again.
This felt very European and the food was phenomenal. Definitely sitting in very close proximity to other diners but it was surprisingly not very loud in there
Outstanding traditional French food, in a warm, non-fussy atmosphere.
Good atmosphere. Service was outstanding and professional. Caesar salad dressing non discript. Liver good but overcooked. Very thin. Sauce and vegetables good. Bread pudding good. Creme anglaise fantastic. Wife said salmon was excellent and profiteroles likewise. Wine was very good. Disappointed that wife's birthday was not acknowledged with at the least a candle
Never have had a bad experience here. Food is always delicious and service is great.
It was tasty
I had a lovely lunch with a lovely friend. It is a very welcoming establishment, comfortable to all. With children, for business, a date, or with friends, you will enjoy!
The food is still good. We visited La Chaumiere during restaurant week-has been 20 years since our last dinner there. My only complaint is that during restaurant week all lunches on the limited menu are advertised to be $22. However, La Chaumiere felt the need to nickel and dime us by adding $2-$3 extra next to most of their Restaurant week listed items - because they plate the food with garnishes that you are charged for. No indication you can opt out of the additional plating cost. So the cost of the meal was more than advertised.
Great restaurant! wonderful food and service!! could not ask for more!
perfect restaurant experience. excellent food, value, service. i would highly recommend.
This was during restaurant week. The food was mediocre at best. The waiter never once asked how we enjoyed our dishes and was very inattentive. Plus they had surcharges for many of their limited restaurant week options. I would never go back.
Superb! You shouldn’t miss this 3 course meal deal during DC restaurant week. The mussels were excellent; even my italian friend was convinced that it was beyond the level. The calf liver was amazingly good w/ red wine sauce. The dessert was good, felt plain compared to the previous 2 courses. Overall, I highly recommend La Chaumiere for you!
Excellent food and service yet again. A favorite restaurant to visit when we are in DC.
Excellent service and food
I showed up 10 minutes before my reservation time . The maitre insisted on seating after my party arrived . They were 5 minutes late . I have never been in a restaurant of this reputation where a lady does not get seated and offered something to drink while waiting for her guests. Terrible attitude too !!!
La Chaumiere for many years was a wonderful restaurant --excellent food, charming environment and excellent service. This past week, we decided to celebrate Adrian's mother's birthday at La Chaumiere. Her appetite is light, so she enjoyed the Lobster Bisque and French bread. Adrian had Bouillabaisse; he said it was good, but nothing to rave about. I ordered St. Jacques Provencale. It was completely bland. I don't think that the chef brought the garlic and herbs within 2 feet of the scallops while preparing the dish. So very disappointing. The House recommended red wine was ordinary. A truly disappointing experience.
Excellent food and service.
Outstanding anniversary dinner. Enjoyed the Tuesday special- Crabmeat enchemise!
We will be back
Although it was very noisy, my friend’s and I loved this experience. The food was classic French prepared exquisitely from the appetizer to the dessert.
Stll my favorite restaurant after 30 years ! First rate food, wine, service, ambiance. Best French restaurant in DC!
Always a great experience. A must dine whenever we are in DC
After they realized I'd pay their prices they appeared more friendly. The kids loved the trout. The wife's scallops tasted good but were undercooked, only seared on a single side. My salmon pastry was mainly pastry, the salmon loin was maybe 3oz total. I'd try it again if I'm willing to deal the quality versus price.
Everything was delicious today for our anniversary lunch. We had French onion soup; green salad with warm goat cheese on bruschetta, raspberries, and raspberry vinaigrette; Alaskan halibut; veal scalopini Normandy; apple tart; and chocolate souffle. We particularly enjoyed the wine with our meal.
Very good wait staff. Great food!
Food was good - not great
Pate appetizer not good
Fish entree was very good
Service was good
We never had a bad meal. The service is professional, and friendly. It is our go to restaurant before the theater.
A consistently great dining experience - for decades!
Some may find this review unfair. Everyone loves this restaurant. This was my first visit. While I agree service and hospitality are wonderful and ambiance nice, the food for me was not memorable. I lived in France for 5 years, my meal wasn't remotely comparable. It was expensive for the quality as well as my entree being lukewarm and pretty bland. I only send food back when it is unbearable so I ate it. I can only speak with regard to my experience. My dining companion was happy with their entree.
Walk through the doors of La Chaumiere and you step into a cultural icon of DC. The ambiance is warm and inviting with just the right amount of energy buzzing around you from enthusiastic eaters to the waiters carrying delicious hot soufflés. I started my meal with a fresh green salad garnished with fresh peaches followed by the mouth watering Tuesday evening special: crepes with lump crabmeat. This dish goes beyond the feeling of outstanding comfort food and I will order it every Tuesday I’m there. We ended the evening by sharing a chocolate soufflé among three of us; however, we decided next time that each of us has to order our own because it was too delicious to share. Bon appetit!
