Everything was great
What an absolutely delightful experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting and you could imagine yourself in a timeless place. The aromas wafting from the kitchen were heavenly. Our server was attentive in a perfect way. Every suggestion he made was delicious. I will go back as soon as I can!
Food was great but very expensive. Waitress was rude and condescending.
Amazing location with great vegan options! Highly recommend
We enjoy fine dining experiences and when we travel we always go to the area’s top restaurants. Check with tip was $300, which is on par for this type of meal with wine. We did the six course meal and let the chef curate it. That was definitely a mistake. Very little creativity and the choices didn’t match. Plating was certainly not a care. Portion sizes were all over the road leaving me so stuffed I couldn’t enjoy the dessert. I prefer smaller portions of higher quality food. That’s the essence of fine dining.
My first course was old roast beef deli meat in a sauce. Sauce was dry and chalky. A stumble out of the gate but with chef curated meals that can happen. No worries. Second was a baked bell pepper with butter and cheese… not exactly a culinary masterpiece. Third was two types of pasta that were pretty good. Wife has different opinions on this but I think it was fine. I thought maybe we were on the upswing, boy was I wrong.
The fourth was a freshwater prawn and halibut. The fish and shrimp were over cooked and dry, but the sauce with it was good. Ate about half. Plating was the best out of all the courses.
The main course was a 2 oz fillet and this is where the wheels came completely off. The filet was about 2 oz and seasoned for about 8 oz. The salt and pepper burned my mouth to the point my wife and I stopped eating it. It was plated with a sea of green peppercorns that looked like a pile of tick eggs. We actually had a good laugh about that one; however, probably part of the flavor problem. Dessert was good. Tiramisu was soggy but had good flavor. Wife got the chocolate bowl with fruit, which she loved.
When it was at the old location it was outstanding, but since they moved to a hotel it fits the hotel restaurant model. Fine dining made by a line chef. The waiter did a fantastic job trying to cover for the chef. He even brought me a plate of carpaccio to make up for the chef’s missed opportunities. He was very good.
We dined after attending the RSO Summer Concert
We sat at table 202. By the window. We really enjoyed our meal. The Dessert was exceptional.
Everything about our La Grotta experience was excellent. Some of our party arrived early at the bar, and the bartender did a superb job making what our party called a “perfect Manhattan”. Onto our meal, we had a large group of 8 people and our waiter did an excellent job keeping up with our drinking and with our orders for food as well as proactively asking us for things such as pepper with our food. Various people on the restaurant staff checked with our group to make sure our experience was excellent and they all were light humored and engaged with our table banter. All of our meals were amazing, especially the tuna steak special, and the tiramisu was heavenly. Really grateful that La Grotta accommodated our group and made us feel like part of their Italian family over the course of our meal.
Our server, Enzo, was excellent. He made sure to offer recommendations as well as provide feedback on menu items we were curious about. The portions were just right; I didn't leave stuffed and needing to loosen my belt, but I also didn't leave feeling slightly hungry. The food was so delicious. Most places just offer menu items that have an overall taste, but we could taste distinct items from our order, which added a very nice, natural, homemade flair. We will definitely be back.
Our server was incredible! Enzo is the best!
The atmosphere is awesome. Wine list extensive but pricey. Food quality was excellent. Great place. Highly recommend for high-end dining.
We waited 45 minutes despite having a reservation. The wait staff was excellent. Got the 5 course meal, which was an immense amount of food. Some courses were better than others. The on menu carpaccio appetizer was strange, but we were brought an off menu prosciutto appetizer that was absolutely fantastic. Pasta was delicious. Salad was ok, had far too many shallots in it. The stuffed quail was very flavorful, but the fillet was disappointing. Sour cherry Panna Cotta was the best part of the night. The strawberry cake had too much white chocolate in it. It’s good food, but overall disappointing given the amount of money we spent and the wait time.
I can't review the food because we never were seated. The small entrance was packed with people (and others gathered in the doorway and outside). After waiting 30 minutes past our reservation time and watching the hostess seat 3 other parties with a later reservation we left. Too bad - when this was located on Cary Street it was great. I won't try La Grotta again.
Had an excellent experience at La Grotto Saturday night! Excellence service: our waiter was very knowledgeable and had thoughtful recommendations for our group celebration. All the dishes were well presented and delicious. We ordered sour cherry panna cotta for dessert and it was better than we had in Italy! One tip: valet park at the hotel next door.
It was my birthday dinner. Very quaint and classy. Food was great and so was the service !
great food and service, has to be among best choices in the city for special evening out..
It was an absolutely amazing experience. My wife and I enjoyed the food, the energy and staff was awesome
Everything we ordered was simply delicious. Our server was helpful, professional, and full of personality. The meal was more than what we would consider a ‘casual dinining’ experience; it was priced accordingly, but we ended up paying less than what we would have anticipated. Highly recommend La Grotta. We’ve added it to our Richmond list. :)
Best italian in Richmond!
Absolutely delicious. The special seafood ravioli we shared as an appetizer was on point. I had the filet which had a bit of pepperish kick to it which was very good. My wife’s salmon and shrimp was really something special. We had three deserts, the coconut cake, strawberry cake , and chocolate covered creampuffs. All was great but the coconut was amazing. The service was excellent. Definitely will be repeating.
This evening, I and my family dined at La Grotta. We were celebrating Fathers Day and my parents 35th wedding anniversary. After walking in, stating my name and reservation time, and my party was met with confusion — seemingly because a table (for 5) hadn’t been prepared. Two more staff members, including the owner Andrea, came over and asked for my name (again). After some minutes we were seated — albeit within arms reach of another table.
I proceeded to ask Andrea if we could sit at a different table (because of the short distance between the adjacent table). She then said “We are really busy. You’re lucky you got a reservation.”
I’m lucky I got a reservation? Andrea you are lucky I decided to stay and eat it your establishment. You are lucky you received a tip at the end of the meal. While the food was prepared well, the unprofessionalism, and micro aggressions exuded by Andrea and the staff that served us made the entire evening unpalatable.
This reservation that you said I’m “lucky” to have was made over a week ago. You all had more than enough time to ensure you had a table (properly socially distanced) to accommodate 5 people. The level of service was suboptimal.
Needless to say, this is my first and last time dining at this establishment.
Fantastic meal. Chef will make dishes that are not on menu. Derrick, our waiter was exceptional. We had a wonderful experience. Will be returning soon.
First rate, great service and nice wine!
One of Richmond's best restaurants. If you are in the downtown area, go to La Grotta.
Tony Capese has a very solid Italian menu. Well worth the visit.
food was wonderful, server was very helpful, our first visit, very quiet, only table seated 1st 15 minutes, house chianti was very good same for dessert. we will be back
I think our server was having a bad night. The food was excellent and we observed the level of service we would expect being given at other tables.
Excellent dinner and service as always!
Dinner was delicious, our waitress was amazing. After I told her that I was GF- she was SO helpful in picking out delicious options from the menu- everything I had was delicious. Mixed Green salad and filet- was so good. We will definitely be going back.
RICHMOND'S BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT. TONY AND ANDREA CAPESE ARE REAL PROFESSIONALS. THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING STARTING WITH OCTOPUS AND CONTINUING ON TO THE BEST FISH IN RICHMOND.
Birthday celebration; party of 11 in ages ranging from 5-95
By far the best service we’ve had at a restaurant bringing our children. The food was out of this world, the server went above and beyond taking care of our table, and the atmosphere was perfect. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
Unbelievable food and service! What a treat.
The veal special was a burst of flavor and tenderness. Perfect!
Always gracious service and fabulous food!
Lovely decor, pleasant atmosphere. Our waiter Zach was informative and gracious! The food was amazing! We all had the wine pairing meals and they w rate exellant!
We had an incredible experience as always. Mark was great.
The BEST restaurant in Richmond. Food is exquisite and service superb.
The drinks were mediocre, the food was mediocre, the service was rushed and flippant. We won’t be back.
Went there last minute right before closing, the food was excellent. Our waiter was very nice and informative. Definitely will go back the next time in town.
Our waitress wasn't up to making our dinner experience the best ot could be. She was stressed and nervous to the point she spilled a refill of water all over missing both my glass and my wife's. We waited too long to receive our drink order and there was no apology for making us wait. Food was very good.
