Rok Sushi Kitchen

Hermosa Beach

With its lovely spot close to the pier in Hermosa Beach, Rok Sushi Kitchen always draws a crowd. But it’s the top-notch Japanese cuisine as re-imagined by four sushi-chef brothers from Mexico that keeps them coming back for more. The chefs present traditional nigiri and maki along with fusion and California-inspired rolls, plus takitori, teriyaki and small plates such as Kobe sliders. Also on the menu is a top-notch bowl of ramen in pork and shoyu versions. A bonus to the restaurant’s setting is the option to stroll along the boardwalk or head to the beach after feasting on noodles and sushi.

At Sushi Roku in Pasadena, the décor is chic and modern and the cuisine innovative, globally influenced versions of Japanese favorites. Along with top-quality classic and creative sushi, the menu offers robata skewers, hot and cold appetizers, charcoal-grilled entrees and a singular ramen among various soups, noodles and rice dishes. The hakata ramen features a spicy miso pork broth, and it’s available at both lunch and dinner. Sushi Roku offers a nice selection of Japanese and local craft beers, along with an extensive collection of sakes and wines.

The popular chain of Japanese restaurants Gyu-Kaku brings its signature dishes to Westside diners at its Pico Boulevard venue, open seven days for lunch and dinner. It also hosts a brunch on weekends, and an all-you-can-eat option with miso butter ramen and goma negi shio ramen among its unlimited offerings. The a la carte menu adds a third ramen – spicy kalbi. A number of Gyu-Kaku’s appetizers are especially good accompaniments to a bowl of ramen, among them yuzu shishito peppers, fried pork dumplings and spicy addicting cucumber.

Diners at Manpuku Tokyo BBQ enjoy a choice of a la carte or four-course set menus, which are mostly a showcase for yakiniku, Japanese-style grilled meat, seafood and vegetables. The restaurant started more than 60 years ago in Tokyo and now has four locations in Southern California, including West Hollywood. Two top-notch ramens feature on its menu: the spicy ramen black with roast garlic and spicy ramen red with seaweed. Both have a rich and spicy beef broth base and include shredded beef, vegetables and boiled egg along with perfectly prepared noodles.
