Mago Grill & Cantina - South Barrington
Amazing food, excellent service, Margaritas are delicious !!
Homemade from scratch margaritas are a must here.
This was my first time at Mago. I joined a friend for a luncheon and we were both delighted with all aspects of the service, food, and atmosphere. I had a taco salad but it was not just your typical taco salad… It was fantastic. I have never had one that was as good as this one. My friend who is watching calories, had a Caesar salad and was also very impressed. We will be back!
We have dined here many many times and we love the food and service. When we went this time we felt extremely rushed by our waitress and staff they were busy but we like to take our time and enjoy our meal. I hope next time the experience is back to normal.
The server and wait staff work SO hard there. It was a great experience and great food. Get the guac!!!
Good food and service.
Our favorite place to eat! We eat here at least every other week! Love the moles!!
You have to try to tableside guacamole prep. Great flavor!
I enjoy Mago, but we had reservations for 7p and did not get seated until almost 730p. We had to stand near the busy front and were constantly bumped. It was a little frustrating. Overall the food is great.
Great food & service!
I think everything is great but they give you very little guacamole for the price
Food was amazing as always!
Have been to this location twice and I love it. Staff is friendly and not over worked they pay close attention and make you feel welcome
Great place for valentines day
Delicious food and drinks. We love the atmosphere and the staff is very friendly!
The service was excellent. The food was good, not as good as we remembered it the previous times. I'm certain we will dine there again in the future.
Food was delicious and flavorful! Service was fast and friendly. Would definitely recommend!
Outstanding as usual - good attention to detail in the presentation, unique and bold flavors in the food. Chef Juan presented us with samples of the featured moles for the night - White chocolate and rose petal, and offered excellent pairing suggestions. All four of us were extremely happy with our food!
The food was outstanding! ….both what I ordered and what my friend ordered. Not your run-of-the-mill Mexican food! Tasty and a good value.
I have dined at both locations and have never had anything but a perfect experience in the past. I ordered enchiladas or fajitas. This was different. The waitperson wasn’t able to understand what we were asking.Although he was attentive we thought we were ordering a dinner for two and it was only available for 6 or more. They also did not acknowledge our special occasion. The guacamole was excellent. The food delivery was very slow even compared to other tables. We didn’t care for our entrees - a chicken pot pie type dish and a chicken mole. The churros were ok. The staff had some compulsion to dust the chair seats off by whipping them with a towel which was annoying. The lights were turned down but there wasn’t any table top lighting. When the bill came the waitperson didn’t understand the discrepancy at first but after reviewing the bill and menu he apologized. Then it took even more time to settle the bill. Bad luck I guess.
Marie offered great service and explaining drinks and food. We have been here before. Seems to get better each time.
A very disappointing experience after Mago's came recommended by a friend. Chips and guacamole both over-salted. Table salsa was good. Margaritas were only passable but definitely shorted on the alcohol. Was not asked if I preferred sugar or salt on the rim, sugar was served which is not my preference. Both main dishes served were below average. My mahi mahi with mole peanut sauce was not finished with peanuts, chopped tomatoes and crema... just buried in mole with the mahi being overcooked. This dish came with poblano mashed potatoes that were fine but also covered in mole with waffle-cut french fries sticking out of them to attempt to give the plate height. Ridiculous. Something a 5 year old would do to show mommy how to present a plate. The vegetables (red pepper and squash) were grossly overcooked and not seasoned at all. My date had bacon-wrapped shrimp which were also over-cooked and served with the same overcooked vegetable combination. We refused to stay for dessert opting to leave as quickly as possible. There are many other Mexican restaurants in the Elgin-Schaumburg corridor at which you will enjoy a much better experience. Sorry to say, but the chef at Mago Grill is hereby demoted to line cook. Clueless. We won't be back. PS: To top off our first experience, the bill was incorrect.
Great service! Highly attentive staff! Great food! I’ll be back soon!
Live music too loud in the restaurant.
Food had excellent staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was great
I have been to Mago many times . The food and service is always great . Drinks are good also. This visit was the same, great food and service , good drinks . I came with four friends and everyone said good things. There was a live mariachi band there this time as well . This definately raised the noise level above normal . I like this sort of thing , but the noise level might not be for everyone . The music is not always there though.
The food was delicious and very fresh tasting. First time visit for my sisters from out of town and they thought the food was great and the atmosphere fun. Will definitely go back again.
Was disappointed as our party of 4 was ready to order the multiple Carne Asada choices on menu as we heard they were outstanding. However, when ordering was told they are out. How can a Mexican restaurant be out of that? Our other food choices were good, but it was New Years Eve and it felt like who cared they were out of your first choice and just order something else. Should of at least gave us a free drink 😜
There were six of us and all but me were very happy.
I had a burrito pastor and it was not very good. It was a lot of food but it was very dry inside and not enough sauce on to or bottom. The guacamole was delicious as were the salsas. The drinks were OK
Nice food and good ambience
Total confusion at check in! Did eventually get our table service extremely slow started of with one waitstaff which then transpired into some one else .
Appeared that they were short of waitstaff. Took forever to get our first drink. Food was mediocre at best not a great experience !!
Monday evening holiday dinner with family. Staff is welcoming. Menu is varied and pricing is good. Tableside guacamole is excellent.
Excellent experience, Carne Asada was perfect as was everything!
Very good menu with great Mexican fare. Excellent salsa and mole! The service was also very good.
My only complaint was the chicken fajitas were very salty.
This was not our first visit; however, this was the first time that we had a less than wonderful experience. We had a reservation for 6:30 pm and we didn't get seated until 6:55 pm. We were told when we arrived (@ 6:30) that the others with 6:30 reservations would be seated first, so we would wait about 10 mins. I was able to see the hostess computer screen as they sat others and where my name was in the list. Others who didn't have reservations were being seated before us (I understand there is a process and that is fine); however, when we still are waiting for almost half an hour and had a reservation, there should be something done about that. My name was at the top for 10-15 mins before we finally were seated (after asking the hostess 3 times about our table). Once we were seated, though, the food was amazing and the service was friendly. This might have just been an evening where things just got too crazy, but if there is anything that can be changed to run things more efficiently, that would be appreciated! Also, there isn't a great place to wait, you have to stand in the middle of the aisles and be in everyone's way. I still enjoy this restaurant, but if I have another experience like this, I may just be turned away.
A good meal frequently disprupted by loud crowd sitting next to ours. Theye were so loud that we can hardly hold an uninterrupted conversation. Since this is not the restaurant's fault, we will definitely come back with the hope that the place will be quieter.
Rough night for the Mago Grill.
1.) Seating walk-ins OVER reservations.
2.) Pop (Soda) has to be returned 3X as it was essentially tonic water. The mix/machine was off for sure.
