   The food and service were fine, with the exception of the dessert apple tart which was amateurish, at best. But the noise level, consistently over 85 decibels, drove us out of the restaurant. I’ve been to Matisse at other times and was looking forward to dinner, but am not likely to go back unless management makes some sound abatement changes. We chose to eat inside to avoid the Wisconsin Avenue traffic noise, but it was a relief to get out of the door. I hope it can be fixed.

   We love dining at Matisse. We just wish they have a more varied and comprehensive menu. The quality of the food is good, but can be improved. The list of good but affordable wines should be expanded, especially during these hard economic times.

   This turned out to be a great Mothers day celebration. I took my wife and daughter to Matisse for the first time. I didn't know what to expect but reading the reviews gave me expectations that were exceeded. The wine selection was great, the mussels were greats. Our entrees came out on time and we sat there for a while stating that we are definitely come back

   Food was spectacular. Each course and every desert (we tried them all) was delicious. Mother's day was special. It was $75 pp without drinks, which was more expensive than most places. Gripes: It took almost an hour between the appetizers and the main course. I think the kitchen was slow, which I understand, but it went without an acknowledgement or an apology. My mother honestly got upset. We went with our 3 year old son and he got the under 10 brunch version, which was $39 for waffles and a desert. Seemed a bit steep. My biggest gripe is that while the $75 dollar version came with an appetizer, the kid's did not. Instead of giving the child something to eat, they left him without any food for a good hour and a half. Yes, we gave him some of ours, but they should have brought out his waffles at the same time as our appetizers. You can't just leave someone at the table without food while everyone else eats, no matter who they are. In the end, my 3 year old said, "Mmm! That was a good lunch!". As good a recommendation as any.

    We need to go here more often. On a Sunday night, particularly, it's not as noisy, and it's easy to park in the neighborhood. The food is terrific - the chef applies whimsical aspects of fusion without detracting from the classic qualities of the dishes. For example: fried green tomatoes - is this Southern standby French? How did this happen? The chef had it in New York and now presents it with with pico de gallo. Or Asian gazpacho with a touch of soy, ginger, wasabi, and a garnish of seaweed salad. Entrees (halibut, soft-shells) and desserts (apple tarte, creme brulee) were elegant and delicious. Drinks and wine list are interesting but run to pricey. Our server was busy but nonetheless delightful.

    A disappointment. Panzanella salad had no croutons or basil (as described in the menu), steak medallions were tasteless. Chicken was quite good. Service was superb. Perhaps the kitchen has had turnover.

    My wife, Deany, and I have been to Matisse many times over the years and have always been extremely pleased with the service, ambience, and the exceptionally fine food. The owner, Fritz, is often there when we dine and he is most pleasant and helpful. We thank Fritz, his entire service staff, and especially the fine chefs for these most memorable dining experiences.

    Really good food, and good service. If I am honest the only thing I found off-putting was that when I paid the tip on the iPad screen they use, the prompt started on the left at 20.00% and increased from there, with the server watching, and it was evident that our server was disappointed that I had selected 20%. In New York it was always "double the tax", which meant about 17%, and some people omit wine when they tip. I have always tipped 20% on the total, and for good service. Assuming a tip, and assuming the minimum is 20%, is presumptuous, and looking disappointed when a customer DOES select 20% leaves a sour taste at the end of the meal. It's a shame, because the food was good, and the service during the meal was good. I am sorry that for Matisse 20% represents poor tipping.

    They managed to ruin a 50th birthday celebrated with his 90 year old father and mother with little concern. We had recommended to so many people previously. Not sure what happened but won’t return and will continue to share our experience. Don’t waste your money. So many fabulous choices around here.

    Our brunch was wonderful as usual. The only glitch was that bread service was not offered until we were almost finished. I'm pretty sure the issue was with the kitchen and not our server. As we came in we noticed the bread baskets were not out on the waiting station as usual.

    Easter brunch at Matisse was really lovely. My only complaint would be with the first course: the tomatoes in the appetizer watermelon salad were as hard as nails. However, the rest of the meal was delicious. Thank you!

    The food was perfectly plated and delicious. Two in our party enjoyed the fabulous tuna tartare, and my tasty beet salad felt both light and substantial. My elderly parents had trouble hearing even with hearing aids; perhaps earlier in the evening would have been better for them.

    Delightful as always. The soft shell crab on a bed of succotash was excellent, as always. The shrimp salad was a generous offering. The wine special was interesting (a Swiss selection from Neuchatel we never would have thought to try). Our server (Hannah) was particularly pleasant. Thinks took a touch longer to get to our table than they might have, but the ambience is so pleasant that was not a problem.

    Consistently excellent. The kitchen knows how to select and prepare seafood. The specials (including the wine specials) really are special. Our scallops and rockfish on an early March evening were some of the best we've had. Portions are generous. The staff are friendly even if spread a little thin. The ambience is delightful. We always remark on leaving that we need to visit more often.
