May St. Cafe
It was a great experience. The staff was personable. The food and device was excellent. The ambiance was magnificent. I will definitely go back again.
The mac and cheese with shrimp was delicious!!!!
Delicious drinks and creative menu options! Really loved the outside patio.
One of my favorites. Worth the trip to the out of the way location. Excellent steaks and really creative options.
The food was exceptional and dining on the patio was very nice.
Great pork chop and quest fundido! Also loved the complimentary flan cake :)
Sorry to say this place has lost its luster. I hope we caught them on a bad night, because this used to be a Chicago favorite of mine. First, the waiter forgot to place our app order so it came out 45 minutes later with our mains. Thank God the truffle lobster mac and cheese was still amazing because the chicken molé was so so and the burger was overdone an dry. The waiter did make up for things with a butter cake desert, which was appreciated. However, the experience was disappointing Step it up May Street. you used to be a 5 star raver!
We had a great experience here. Andres took great care of us, the homemade sangria was great! Guadalupe made amazing food, the fajitas and Tostones were out of this world.
Cozy restaurant off the beaten path on May St. and Cermak. Nice covered outdoor area eating space plus a new outdoor area is available for drinks and appetizers. Loved the flavors of the guacamole, Puerto Rican Paella and Chicken Mole. Will definitely go back.
Chose May St Cafe for its proximity to Thalia Hall. It is a tiny restaurant that you need to look for. Food was great. I would call it Latin Fusion. Much of the menu is shellfish. Also some meat. Limited wines by the glass but reasonably priced. I had a shrimp and scallop dish over coconut rice inside a grilled pineapple. Delicious, although I was disappointed that the scallops were either the tiniest on earth or else they were actually scallop bits. Only other issue was service. The food came quickly but the servers were unaware of certain needs, like water and getting the check. I would go again.
We enjoyed everything! Hate we waited six years to finally stop in. Will definitely dine in again.
How does this place stay in business? Everything is so slow - slow to get a drink, slow to get the appetizer, slow to get the salad, really slow to get the main course. Most of the time my wife and I sat there with no food and no drinks and everyone around us was complaining. One table couldn't take it and left when no server approached after 15 minutes, another couple got one main course but the other never came and they had to leave for a concert so the server gave them their $30 entree to go. The chef/owner(?) came out to apologize but seemed completely oblivious about what was going on, which makes sense now. Everyone that came in after me I felt sorry for - they were going to be disappointed and frustrated. I felt sorry for my server, who must have to apologize over and over again, day after day. The problems here are systemic, this was not an aberration. And this is not one of those places where the food is so fantastic people tolerate the bad things. Food was mediocre. Nice people work here, I want it to succeed, and obviously it must be doing okay because it's been around for a while, but for the life of me I don't know how.
The jalapeño cilantro margarita makes the trip to May St worthwhile and the food and service ate an added bonus. The Sunday brunch is so so and lacks a distinct Mexican flavor. The outdoor patio is wonderful in the summer. The service was very attentive and not overbearing.
This place is a hidden gem. From the outside it doesn't look like much and from the inside for that matter, but what does offset those small but significant disappointments is the FOOD! It was simply fab and delicious. Mario and his crew really knows how to make something so standard taste so yummy. The servers were not too attentive and whenever I had a question, they had to ask someone else. The interior was a bit odd, perhaps outdated? There isn't much room inside but there is an outdoor are that was enclosed. Overall, to me the FOOD outweighed the minuses. Try it out!!!!
This was our first time at May St. We REALLY wanted to like it as we have only heard good things. May St. is very small, the main area holding maybe 60 people, including the bar stools. There was no one seated at the bar that night (as its tight seating so being at the bar did not look comfortable). We waited 20 minutes or more before someone took the drink order. To be fair they also have another seating area of which we thought maybe they were short staffed and the other area was full but after checking that out we discovered there weren't many people over there. Our dinners took quite a long time..... our original drinks were empty and it was hard to get someone over to refill until they brought dinner. Dinner was not worth the wait....steaks were extremely salty. We left without ordering dessert.
Service is hit or miss here but the food and margaritas are worth it. Love their cinnamon chipotle fajitas. I would not recommend this place if you are in a hurry as service is typically slow.
I went for my graduation dinner. The food was great but the service could have been better, it seemed understaffed. One of my drinks wasn't prepared correctly but it was removed from my bill. Also the inside dinner area is a little crapped the table configuration isn't ideal. I wish the server would have been more clear that the outside seating was enclosed. It was a little chilly but I would have preferred the outside deck seating. I plan to return and would recommend.
Food and service was overall good. Easter brunch was advertised with a "slow roasted herb leg of lamb". I was very disappointed when the lamb was a no show. That was really the only reason I chose their restaurant. Ended up having a steak (which was very good), and paying more. For the normal breakfast items, I could have went to any restaurant and saved $100.
My sisters and daughter and I had get together and had a wonderful dinner. Relaxed atmosphere but very tasty food. We were pleasantly surprised by dessert on the house! Also tasty and well presented.
I wanted to love this place but i just cant. Good food. Nice service too.
The food here is very good and a great selection. The lobster quesadilla was wonder also, as was the shrimp diablo pasta and the La Piña de la Playa de Puerto Rico. But it was the flan that really stole the show.
Loveee their food and their service. Coconut rice and paellas are delicious. Actually everything is delicious
Just love this place it's so warm aND cozy and the wair staff are very good and friendly. Will also visit May st.
Food was stellar. Service was strong. We arrived early and we're the only people there until 6:30. Great margaritas.
The menu had an interesting range of dishes, most with Puerto Rican or other Latin influences, and more steaks than I expected. Because of the chef's background, we opted for two Puerto Rican entrées: the mole chicken and a slow roasted pork dish. Unfortunately, the mole overwhelmed the chicken, and, oddly, the pork dish had relatively little flavor except for garlic. Overall, we judged the food good, but not exceptional. On the other hand, the margaritas were excellent. If you go on a cold night, bundle up if you are seated near the windows.
May street is terrific. Awesome steak. Best queso fundido i ever had. Great margaritas. Combines Mexican restaurant and prime beef steakhouse. Does both superbly. Steak is great value. Comes with potato and vegetable unlike other steak places that are ala carte. This was a real find and I will be back.
one of the city's hidden gems...the food & cocktails were outstanding...
As always the food at May Street was outstanding. Incredible flavors.
While looking for a "steak" restaurant, I found the May St. Cafe. What a fine. The food was excellent, steak, vegetables and the appetizer, quesadillas with pear and brie were delicious. We look forward to returning.
I hate to say it was bad. But it was bad. Overly salted food. Crowded table in an empty restaurant. Slow service. Probably the worst meal I ate out in 2016. They did try to make up for it with complimentary dessert but by that time we just wanted to leave.
May St Café is definitely worth the trip. Great food, ability to speak with your friends with Latin jazz playing in the background and very reasonable food. The steaks were delicious with the chef's special spice rub were delicious. The chicken mole was one of the best I have eaten. The menu has a Latin accent which is subtle and elevate simple garlic mashed potatoes to a new height. I would recommend dining here if you are looking for good food at reasonable prices and a relaxing atmosphere .
Drinks are amazingly tasty and the steak is mouthwatering. Reasonbly priced.
One word, "OUTSTANDING"!!! The chef even came out to our table out of the blue to chat and make sure everything was to our liking.
EXCELLENT FOOD - I was surprised except for one large party on patio, we were the only ones in the place!
Wonderful restaurant. When not in summer, food is served in two cozy rooms, with nice soft background music (NOT Muzak) and the place is quiet enough to have a conversation among friends. Food is basically Puerto Rican, with some Mexican staples, excellently prepared and presented elegantly, with reasonable prices. Outstanding and friendly service, good wine list. Has also a long list of superb steak options with Allen Brothers meat. In spite of the superb cuisine, it feels more like someone's home than a restaurant. Very highly recommended (I wil give 5 stars to only a handful of places in Chicago: Spiaggia, Topolobambo....)
One of my favorite spots in Chicago. The food is outstanding. The flavoring they put on their steaks reminiscent of what you would find in an authentic Baja restaurant. As we sat outside, but for the surroundings, we could have been enjoying a dinner adjacent to the Sea of Cortez.
When we walked up, we almost walked right on by.. the place is pretty sketchy looking. No for the entrance, the outside patio was empty (even of staff) and the door into the main building was practically falling off its hinges. After we found that door, we noticed a distinct smell of old carpet, which covered all the floors inside. Most of the decor had a modern look, but up close looked sort of beat up. We were the only ones in the restaurant to start, which freaked us out a bit - its a very odd location - Pilsen is a nice place, but Im not sure the location of the cafe could be in a much more 'industrial looking' part of town.. We were seated promptly, then asked if we wanted Guacamole (which of course costs money, but was really good).
The drinks menu had several interesting concoctions, but there wasnt much description on variations available. The 'extensive wine list' was conspicuous in its absence, at least from our table. Regardless, the drinks we chose were both very good. The menu was pretty red-meat heavy, but at least its obvious what their specialty is. Our orders arrived in a very reasonable amount of time (by now we were one of two couples). The skill of the chef became clear. Our steaks were presented on snazzy rectangular plates. Sides were imaginative with well balanced flavors. The cuts of meat were exceptional and perfectly cooked, and the cranberry butter that topped them worked perfectly with the dry seasoning. The quantity and presentation food was great, the flan we had for desert, also fantastic.
Pricing is a bit high, but not overly so given the obvious quality of the ingredients and preparation.
Overall, The food is the definite upside with this place, with marginal service, marginal pricing, in a less than marginal location. The location and atmosphere are manageable - just be prepared.. and your meal will probably make up for it - Its certainly better than going to a 3-star Michelin restaurant and getting a frozen dinner..
This restaurant is a hidden gem. They have a knack for mixing different foods together that you wouldn't expect. Pineapple, mole, steak, salmon, rice and beans...all so good! They also make really good homemade drinks. I highly recommend trying this place.
Anniversary dinner. Ate outside. Service very good; owner/chef visited our table. Food wonderful. Have been there before; will visit again.
