Modern Barn is the restaurant you book when you want the night to feel as good as the skiing. Set in a restored 1890 barn just minutes from Sunday River, it blends ski-town comfort with cellar-level credibility. Candlelight, high beams, and a room built for lingering, not rushing. The kitchen is run by owner-chef Michael, who still butchers every steak in-house. Ribeyes and filets arrive with the kind of sear and seasoning you expect from a serious steakhouse. Thai chili cauliflower is a fan favorite. Fresh oysters, scallop risotto, and local fish “your way” give depth without feeling fussy. Modern Barn drinks like a wine bar with something to prove. The Wine Spectator award list runs deep, with 175+ bottles and all available by the glass. Martinis have become a local ritual, Service runs on neighborly instinct. If you are looking for one place that captures what Bethel is about, Modern Barn is it. Family owned. Wine Spectator award backing the list.

An interesting place, made to be reminiscent of an old lodge. Food and service were excellent, some of the seating however was an odd choice with what appear to be low tables and deer skin chairs that made it uncomfortable and hot to sit in for the two hour dinner. Fondue was magnificent, calamari was also delicious, the steak burger was also very good, but because of our low table and itchy seats was my second choice as I had been eyeing the steak freets but honestly had no way to comfortably eat it. Deserts were delicious and the overall experience great, would go again. Just would be sure to ask for a normal table and chairs.

LL Bean couldn't have wanted it better. The lodge is sequestered under huge white pines along the edge of the most beautiful lake on the East Coast. Cocktails are on the veranda and randomly outside wherever you wish and the cocktail hour is laid-back, as are the table times. Once you have your reservation, the table is yours for the evening, so you go in to eat when you're good and ready. Men must wear a jacket, But otherwise it's country casual. The food is straightforward American fair and is excellent. It will not compete for exotic with the Old Port in downtown Portland, but this is not why you come here. If you want an excellent straightforward meal in an atmosphere that is almost indescribable, but something out of "On Golden Pond", this is your place.!!!
