Osteria da Nino
The service took a little while to get us seated and to give us drinks. Our waitress did apologize, bit the restaurant was not that busy, so it was kinda strange. I always tip 20%, so if you give me horrible service, I will tip you, but I won't come back.
The food was very salty and it did not seem to reflect any specific part of Italy. We had the mussels and the tomato sauce was good, but the acidity did not pair well with the mussels. I also had the squid ink pasta, and felt it could have been done a bit better. Overall, it was decent, but not enough to return sadly. I wish it was cause there needs to be better Italian places.
Great place for a business, friends, or a date lunch / dinner spot. Nice wine list and variety on the menu. Food is very fresh, staff is great, and you'll usually find the wonderful owner on site greeting the customers.
One thing, it was easy to book, and the restaurant owner called me the morning of to confirm everything. Nice conversation. However, the owner FAILED to mention that with a party as large as mine that we would have to do a max 4 CHECKS?!?! ...Despicable. He only mentioned the time of the event, the table set up, and parking. During dinner, my boyfriend spoke with the waitress who mentioned the billing policy....and she was nice enough to let us split it the way we could.... worked it out for our group. She was willing to help, and was nice and professional. However, the owner went back to my boyfriend and caused a fuss of it all. He was very unprofessional, and at this point I don’t think we will be coming back here in a large group if the restaurant OWNER...who claims to be in the business for over 30 years.....is not gonna be considerate enough to accommodate different group needs. Next time, mention in your policies about the billing policy......
The service was good thanks to our waitress, and the food was good.
We hadn't been to Osteria da Nino before, though we do eat out often in Shirlington. We very much enjoyed the food and the ambiance.
Nino is a great host. Good and creative Italian cuisine Wonderful oysters and superb pork and fish. Very good and simple wine list
It was a very relaxing lunch and the food was wonderful.
Nino’s is simply the best Italian food in NOVA!!! Nino is a wonderful host who will make you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door!
Absolutely incredible. Was in town for a visit and made a reservation. Hands-down, best food I’ve gotten in Arlington. 10/10 would recommend.
One element I always appreciate about Osteria da Nino is the service. Whenever I visit, I feel like I get a nice relaxed meal, with courses served with appropriate timing, which I think is a lost art in so many popular restaurants. Nino walks around and chats with guests. He genuinely wants to share his passion for food and wine with others, and it shows. Being just around the corner from the "main strip" of Shirlington, I always feel like Osteria da Nino gets overlooked by many people. I encourage you to give it a try. I tend to go for their seafood specials, and they're delish -- pan seared scallops on the recent visit were cooked to perfection!
Lunch is a treat as not crowded and quiet. Owner meets and greets with real desire for you to enjoy your time. Had not been for a while, but will now as fine menu reasonably priced. Did not have wine, but nice list, and owner has frequent wine dinners.
Everything about this restaurant is top notch. Always a pleasure to dine here. Nino is a charming and friendly host.
Great food, great service...will be back!
Family dinner following a funeral service. The staff was so kind and courteous to a big group that it was an enjoyable evening. The food was delicious and the recommended wine was delightful! Thank you!
Hidden gem in Shirlington. Our server, Holt, was top notch. Gave me samples of different wines to help me choose my glass. Octopus appetizer was perfectly tender and smoky, with yummy grilled tomatoes & peppers. Mediterranean Branzino crispy and cooked just right. Pot de chocolat dessert was chocolatey and rich. Will recommend to others and be back!
Always a fantastic meal with excellent service! One of my absolute favorite places!
The food is outstanding, and never disappoints. Great gluten-free selections, as well. One of our favorite places to dine and hang out. :)
Excellent meal. We went there during restaurant week not intentionally. The grilled octopus was excellent. I had the Osso Bucco which was outstanding. My son had the Fruiti de Mare and it was excellent as well. Also very nice wine list.
Osteria da Nino promotes its food as an innovative take on classic Italian dishes. Well, the dishes I sampled were basically a disappointing take on the those dishes. Too little sauce was served for a Brussel sprouts dish, and a Caesar salad lacked dressing and inspiration.
This is a nice restaurant with a comfortable atmosphere and a welcoming host who makes you feel at home. The food is always very good as the owner is Sicilian and the food is genuine Italian cuisine. The waiters are friendly and knowledgeable, but the restaurant appears to be understaffed and the turnover of personnel seems to be high.
I went to Osteria da Nino for restaurant week and it was delicious. It was worth the price but without restaurant week, it is very expensive. The food was exquisite and would have been worth the price.
Had the grilled octopus as appetizer and the Branzino as the main. Outstanding! Service was very good-not hovering over us but there when we needed. I’ll be back!
A nice little find out of sight from the main street in Shirlington. Glad we found it. Food was not fabulous but it was good and we will be back.
Reliably good food, but menu needs a refresh. The wine list is terrific. As a host, Nino is gregarious and takes joy in greeting diners. Wait staff need more training.
Fantastic find and a very warm and welcoming staff! The owner is also very charming and a treat to meet. Food was delicious. We will go again.
I have been here several times and each time was delicious. Our friends and we picked Restaurant Week as a special time to get together, not far from home, and wonderful food. We shared appetizers of arancini (full of meat, not rice), meatballs, burrata salad and paid extra for the grilled octopus...which we all loved. Entree-wise we had the branzino over braised fennel, cavatappi with lamb ragu and linguini with clams. We shared tastes and loved every bite. For dessert we had chocolate mousse, tiramisu and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. The entire meal was filling for all of us, though servings did not allow any take homes (which is just fine). Excellent value but I have to say their regular prices are very fair. We will return.
There are about 5-6 free parking spaces across the street in the lot by the metro station. You have to look hard to see them.
Great restaurant if you like old-school Italian menu and hospitality.
Great Italian food in Shirlington. Pasta always a good choice
My wife, two daughters and I were looking for a place to eat before watching a show at the Kennedy Center. The owner greeted us at the front door which always starts the experience out right! Seeing our dress attire, he asked if we were going to a show. We told him we were and so he asked us when we needed to leave by and he had his staff accommodate our needs. The food was excellent, the atmosphere nice, and overall we had a great time. We tried two of the specials: the scallops and the veal... Yum!
Good drinks and brunch.
My wife & I had dinner at Osteria da Nino last Saturday evening. We had reservations and were seated right away, at our request outside. Our server was exceptional, checking back frequently with us but was in no way intrusive. We each started with a limoncello martini that was extremely tasty. Bread came promptly with a delicious olive oil & pesto dipping sauce, we were brought a second basket without our asking. We each had a salad and entrée sharing a bottle of wine. Our entrees were delivered shortly after finishing the salads, allowing just the right amount of time to pass between courses. We finished the evening with olive oil cake, trio of wonderful gelatos and a decaf expresso & cappuccino. The food we had was delicious and the owner stopped by to chat a few times. We will certainly return.
We went here because of the high rating but we’re extremely disappointed. First we had a reservation, arrived on time at 8:45 pm and went to the host stand. We stood there for 5 minutes before the host even came over to acknowledge us. He appears to be the owner/manager. He apologized. We sat at table and it took 5 minutes for anybody to come to our table. Finally we were poured water and had to ask for menus! They brought the menus and then the tiniest 4 pieces of bread with pesto for our party of 4. Our order was taken. We ordered a Fritto Misto consisting of fried fennel, calamari, and shrimp. There was one shrimp, the fennel was like eating bamboo shoots and the fried coating was greasy and would fall off when u picked it up. Not even flavorful. Then we waited 45 minutes with nobody even giving us the status of our entrees. The restaurant was now 2/3 empty. I had to go after the manager to ask if our food was even coming. He said he was going to check on it. After another 5 minutes he told us a story that a grill in the kitchen was pushed off a table and some of the meal went on the floor. It was bizarre. He offered a glass of wine. It was now pushing 9:50 when our food arrived. My veal chop was bland. Our waitress told me it was a special and cost $25 when I ordered it. The bill charged $35. The branzino, meatballs and spaghetti, and eggplant were decent although the amount of eggplant was pathetic. We didn’t order dessert as it was pretty late at this point. The manager sent us a tiramisu. He apologized again and took 50% off the food portion of our meal, not the drinks. We eat out a lot and all kinds of places. This ranked near the bottom. What a disappointment. There are so many places to eat in Shirlington right next to this place. No reason to go to Osteria da nino! Mal !
I met a friend for lunch on a Thursday at Noon... so that explains why it was so quiet I guess, but the food was excellent and we had a wonderful 4 course meal in a relaxed and quiet environment. Highly recommend.
Had a business meeting at this restaurant last night. The owner was very welcome and staff very attentive. The selection of wine incredible, the food selection is what you would expect from a traditional Italian restaurant. The had the feature of the day - risotto shrimp with asparagus why delicious. The homemade warm bread was mouthwatering. My co-workers had a fish special and they loved this selection. I also had a tiramisu and enjoyed it very much. The owner would come back to the table and make light conversation he made you feel at home. I wish this restaurant had a better store front setting because it's off of a Main Street in Shirlington and doesn't get the proper exposure it should. The Resturant for a Tuesday night was almost full and the bar was as well. I know they're going to have a special wine tasting event in August and we may sign up for.
If your in for a traditional Italian meal give this restaurant a try!
The best Italian food in the DMV!
This place is always good. Both the food and the service are excellent. One of the servers even remembered my friend even though she hadn’t been there recently.
Our waiter was very helpful. He suggested a bottle of wine that went well with our food and the hot weather. We had scallops and salmon, and both were excellent. For appetizers we had tried oysters and brussels sprouts - both winners. The charming host stoped by to chat. It was a lovely meal.
Overall a great experience and value. Would have appreciated a more attentive waiter.
Main course was overcooked and portion was pretty small for an entree. It consisted of three overcooked, dried out shrimp on a miniscule bed of a grain and a few sprigs of greens. Bread was cold and not appealing.
Great authentic dishes from Compania, Italy. Service was great and the wine pairing along with the four course dinner was perfect! Trult a hidden gem just around the corner from Carlyle Restaurant in Shirlington!!!
