1799 at The Clifton
Although they were very busy at the tail end of restaurant week, we enjoyed a drink at the bar before our dinner. The food was delicious and the drinks were perfect! We enjoyed the atmosphere and would recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys a fancy night out.
We have been to numerous 5 star restaurants in New York City and Philadelphia. Our recent experience at 1799 is worthy of 5 stars. Food was the best meal we have had here in Charlottesville. Service was impeccable. All of this for $39 because of restaurant week. We will be back.
Our reservation was for 8 PM We never saw ANY food till 9:30 PM, and that was only flatbread and roll. Rest of the food never came till almost 10 PM.
Bar Service was great. Dinner Service was poor. All dishes were delivered from the kitchen by runners with us asking them for items like our silverware. Our server only came around to clear the plates. She never asked if everything was ok. My first course was good but I think ingredients were missing from the finished product that were listed on the menu. My main entree was served over an hour after being seated and it lacked the key ingredients that were listed on the menu. In addition, the kitchen substituted cashew nuts for pine nuts without asking about allergies. Having served so late into our reservation and our server never coming around, I had a very disappointed experience.
TLDR: Perhaps the pandemic took a toll on their organization, servicing, etc, but our experience was just ok.
We had high expectations for this restaurant, so perhaps that is where we started off on the wrong foot. Everything felt far more informal and slapped together than I’d expected. No one in particular greeted us or set the tone for the evening, providing an overview of their service (which was a prix fixe menu). They had 2 sets of staff trying to figure out who was servicing our table, and it took a few attempts to settle on someone. The staff was friendly and helpful but generally disorganized. Two of the items on the menu were not available, but no one informed us ahead of time. Our plates were not cleared in a timely manner so our main course came out before our appetizer was removed and caused an unsmooth transition. The food itself was good, but the shuffle of the environment and lack of menu items really threw us off.
Overall, perhaps they were going through a transition period or resetting after the pandemic. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but I’d like to see improvement before considering going back.
Started off great with a fantastic wine recommendation from their somm and good starts (encrusted scallop). But it went downhill from there. We waited an hour for our entrees (NY strip and salmon) as we watched all other guests that had arrived after us receive their dinners (including the same orders). When entrees arrived - they were very overcooked. The salmon was charred and the steak was well done (ordered Medium). Desserts (rhum baba and torte) were really disappointing too. Woof. For this price, what gives?? Made for a very sad birthday dinner for my husband. With so many options in the area, we will likely never return.
All friends in our group wholeheartedly agreed one of best dining experiences we’ve ever had in all aspects!
We went to the Clifton Inn for our anniversary. The host was very welcoming and quickly brought us the champagne we ordered. The service was downhill every since. Our wine came after our appetizer and we had to go to the bar to try to get it. The bartender was more concerned with talking to his girlfriend or hope to be date later in the evening. The food was excellent but pricey for how much we received. We enjoyed our meal but won’t go back. Too expensive for the quality of service.
If you want to try something new to add to your food palette, the Clifton Inn is the place to go. I have always found their menus creative and appetizing. On this trip I tried the bone marrow and escargot appetizer (I never thought I would do this) and it was delicious (the fried mussels were also tasty). I had the Homemade Toulouse Crepenette and my husband had the Shallow Poached Local Flounder. Both were fresh tasting well balanced and beautifully plated. For dessert we had the Honey Lavender Creme Brûlée and Chocolate Tart. While the pre-fixe menu is fun, You may want to balance your menu choices so that you don’t feel over full. We highly recommend the Clifton Inn for a wonderful dining experience.
The Clifton is our favorite dining place in the Charlottesville area. It's a visit to a grand old estate. They offer several seating options--the library, dining room, and outside covered deck. It''s quiet. The food is creative and delicious. The staff is personable and efficient. The addition of Michael as the sommelier has definitely taken the Clifton experience to a higher level of quality and enjoyment. It's an all around great place to dine.
Wonderful evening with great friends. Loved the prix fix menu, cocktails were INCREDIBLE. Food was good, chicken was dry and the creme brulee was thin but would absolutely go back. Sommelier and server did a great job choosing wines for our table.
Wonderful atmosphere and great service. Food wonderful. Enclosed porch area was hot as a/c could not cool down the area we were seated. Otherwise memorable.
We loved our 1799 experience. All appetizers, entrees and desserts were just delicious. The specialty drinks are amazing. The staff is friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back.
Wonderful three course meal plus cocktail, wine, and complimentary anniversary champagne. Bartender was also our server and was fabulous. We love the cozy indoor atmosphere. Perfect place for a special occasion.
Beautiful back porch, well spaced tables, creative menu.
1799 is in a beautiful setting, and the food was good. however, given we were forced to a $69 pre-fixe menu, the service was not very good. At least 20 minutes after we completed our food until the server checked on our table, all the while still waiting on our third course. I will try it again, but one more chance.
Exquisite! The food and the cocktails were phenomenal!
I was disappointed, the restaurant was beautiful. Unfortunately there was a piece of hair in my appetizer, that messed up everything. I still paid $100 and I didn’t enjoy anything. I will not go back there again.
Charming house and lots of attention to detail. Good wines
Overall: Good but server was was not trained well and brought wrong orders to the wrong guests. Chairs on the "back porch" were uncomfortable and music (recorded) was intrusive.
Very nice setting. Excellent food. Food delivery a little slow. Would go again.
Hard to find something to like on menu. Ended up with chicken. Hard to mess up a chicken dish- & it was fine. Excited to try “fried mussels”... there were three on the appetizer dish.
Stepping out into the pitch dark when leaving- I noticed outside lanterns- so went back in to turn them on myself so could more safely make it to our car...
Sat outside under the tent. Great setting. Service by Jeb was exceptional. Food was delicious. Try the tequila old fashion.
We had a wonderful dinner. The food was delicious, the service was great. The Inn is a beautiful place!
Our server Jeb was above abs beyond! Absolutely fantastic evening!
Excellent food... presentation, flavor combinations, and portions served. Great service (thanks, Jeb). Beautiful location.
Had our anniversary dinner here. Food was wonderful and felt very private and intimate.
Excellent food, the highlight was the rum babka so yummy
Great service and atmosphere
We were asked to wait at an unclean table near the bar. No one asked us about a cocktail while waiting. We had 7:15 reservations and were served our food around 9:15. Fortunately we all enjoyed one another during the long wait
A top 10 dinning experience, if you are within 200 miles take the drive! Everything was prefect! If I could rate with more stars I would!
Excellent attention from Sommelier.
Food very well prepared although portions could be larger.
Dined there to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary. Very enjoyable. Impeccable service and delicious food. Pleasant atmosphere on the back porch with beautiful surroundings. A bit pricey at $190 for two (including the tip) with no alcoholic beverages. Worth noting that the road and parking areas are unpaved, which made walking to and from the car a bit difficult for my wife since she was wearing heels. Wear flat, casual-style shoes. The chairs at the tables on the porch were uncomfortable. Very stiff, straight-backed wooden chairs with vinyl seats that were hot and sticky. Recommend chairs with a wider, rounded back and cloth seats which be more relaxing over the hour or so you are seated. Overall, a winner and we would go back.
The food was mundane, at best. Slivered asparagus was wonderful but the main courses for my wife and myself were almost without flavor. Her strip steak had major pieces of gristle in it and my vegetarian dish was dull by almost any standards. The desserts (strawberry shortcake and an ice cream sandwich) were unremarkable. I've had better shortcake at home and calling something a "sandwich" which included a dollop of ice cream the size of a nickel is a joke. Additionally, we told the waiter we wanted to order glasses of wine when the first course arrived and he said he would do that when they cleared from that course. He didn't return until we were almost through with dessert so we did not have any wine with dinner. Any attention we got was from food servers and that was only serving and clearing. Finally, with only 8 or 9 tables occupied, we expected a little speedier service. The wait between courses was probably twice as long as would be necessary to keep a dinner moving smoothly.
Not the best way to spend an anniversary dinner. $69 per person was double the actual value of the experience.
This is one of the nicest places in terms of service, atmosphere, and food quality I've been in a long time. We sat outside, it was quaint, lovely and extremely romantic. Definitely a good romantic idea or grown family night. I highly recommend the bass as well as the crab appetizer.
Have waited years to try this restaurant but it was a major disappointment. The food was so mediocre I wish I had stayed home. It's a nice setting and the waiter was very polite. But I did not enjoy any of the 6 dishes we ordered. They were all sub-par. And entirely not worth the considerable price of the dinner.
Mothers Day. Thank you!!
Amazing meal!!! Highly recommend!
Extremely friendly staff, on point with their service. Will be back!
Sercice and setting were very good. Rib steak as entree in prix fixe dinner was fair
Truly abysmal. Service was ridiculously bad. Empty restaurant with hour-long wait for main course. Server slamming silverware, gossiping with coworker directly next to our table, never checked on us, didn’t clear dishes, etc. Food was mediocre at best. Pasta dish tasted like boxed noodles with watery Prego. Dessert was cheesecake that was over baked (scrambled eggs inside). Coffee was Maxwell. $200 meal in a beautiful setting, value of the food to me was maybe $40-50. Couldn’t have been more disappointed. The service was so noticeable that it was laughable.
