The food was very good, presentation very nice. Service excellent. This is from the Phelps Barn menu though we were in the 1801 Tavern. There was a mix up with the reservations--they were actually closed in the dinning room for 1801 Tavern but apparently forgot to close the "open table" reservation option. They did honor our reservation, along with another group of 4. We did appreciate this since we wanted the old historic dinning room. The menu did have a nice selection.
It was a wonderful experience enjoying our meals in the 1801 Tavern. The food was cooked as requested and if there were any problems, the wait staff were willing to see to any changes. None were needed. As usual, our food was wonderful. I had sword fish and it was excellently grilled. The atmosphere was quiet and the music was not too loud.
Limited menu. Asked for Gorgonzola to be left off mussels appetizer....arrived with it. Filet mignon was cooked with thick crusty black char on one side & pretty blah tasting inside, though it was actually cooked to medium as ordered. Smoky dried tomato in risotto with rock shrimp was overwhelmingly smoky making entire dish taste more like hot dogs than anything else. Could only eat small amount and waitress never even asked if all was ok. Creme brûlée dessert was loose & somewhat grainy rather than having custard consistency. Food overall, both in 1801 Tavern and in the more casual Phelps Barn, has been our least favorite part of a stay at the Grafton Inn, which we have visited numerous times going back to 1973. In early years, restaurant was quite good. On occasions we have dined here in recent years, have not enjoyed it very much. The exception is breakfast which has always been and remains quite good!
