We had a very pleasant evening meal here. The menu was a bit limited, but we did understand that it was past the regular season. We appreciated having a place to eat on campus that was very good indeed. The beverage selections are inspired and many and we found the service to be attentive and professional. With respect to the limited menu, there was only one meal I could order, the Portabella slider, which was tasty, but not what I had in mind. I would’ve preferred fish, but the glaze contains duck, which I thought was a rather odd, and that is not on my menu. My husband really enjoyed the prime rib, and found the sides to be very good. The house salad dressing is wonderful. It is very light and simple but very flavorful, and the greens were fresh and crispy. I wish we had realized that they were open late on Saturday, as we would’ve come by for post -concert drinks and some food. We will know better next time, and bring some friends with us as well.
Overpriced and in need of a chef who understands quality and proper seasoning. Looks like a great bar for late evening but not a dining experience
Beautiful restaurant at Chautauqua with fresh and creative dishes served in a warmly welcoming atmosphere. A lovely experience.
Since you are going into the Institute be sure to stop by the ticket window and get a time stamped Purpose Pass. This allows you in for dinner without a gate charge.
Dinner was amazing and love all of the eclectic seating. Drinks were amazing and dessert provided by Portage Pies! Altogether amazing! We sat upstairs which was great and there was a jazz group playing. That was a little loud once we got downstairs- but created a great ambience! Great job 2 Ames!
We have been twice in two weeks. The menu is limited to only fresh good food. Everything we have had has been delicious. The wine selection is great and it is an adorable spot. Also great value for you dollar
Just what the Chautauqua Institution needed: a modern American restaurant with a youthful vibe. The entree choices are not numerous, but what they do they do well: a terrific burger, a portabello burger, walleye patties, lamb meatballs, and Moroccan chicken were dishes we enjoyed. There is a lovely bar - a full bar, imagine that at Chautauqua - nice wine selection and interesting beers in rotation.
The biggest problem is that because so many of the patrons wish to get out by showtime, the hours from 6-8 are hectic, to say the least. But everyone is civil and does her/his best to stay calm and get through it. Reservations are a must. Or come for lunch, when it's less frantic. The point is the food is very good in a place that can be a restaurant desert.
We sat at a long table with 7 of our buddies and had a great dinner time together. The server was outstanding in her ability to deal with our quirky ways. She was very attentive and responsive to our needs.
Cocktails amazing! Nice visit with bartender and owner. Staff very attentive, food well prepared and nice presentation
Walleye cakes were undercooked and flavorless. Tabouli salad wet and unseasoned. Cheese platter was tasty. A big disappointment since last year, which was excellent.
2 Ames has improved significantly since last year. Much better service and food turn-around greatly improved. Small menu, good wine list.
We had a reservation but arrived 15 min early and they were fine with that. Creative meatball tapas excellent. Wine choice excellent too
We love the fact that 2 Ames is at CHQ! Fun vibe, live music, great bar. We wish the outdoor seating had been allowed to stay! They could add a little more to their menu. I’d suggest a real fish entree every evening, larger salads, and a veggie burger. Their fries are not to be missed!
Oh my... The evening we were there (7:45pm reservation) there was a party of 12 in our room that was so loud it ruined our experience. We could barely hear the conversation at our table because of their loud talking and children yelling. Our waiter was apologetic but it was not a pleasant evening.
Thank you for great food. But your venue seems to be too small for the noise level created by large groups.
Food other than the charcuterie platter (which was lovely), was mostly processed looking and fairly bland. The French fries were pretty good and the drinks were nice as well. If we go back, it won’t be for a full meal. Instead we might go by for a snack and some drinks before going somewhere else for dinner.
The staff at 2Ames is so enthusiastic about the food and the restaurant. Everything we ate was very flavorful!
Waiters are inexperienced. Seating chaotic both times we ate there. Nothing is well organized but food is good.
Excellent food and service. We had a charcuterie board with both cheese & meat which we loved and very much enjoyed an oxtail poutine which was served over triple cooked garlic fries which were to die for. The portions were very good
We rounded that out with an excellent red Italian wine which was smooth and delicious; a server recommendation through the bartender which was an excellent choice with our food. Very busy night with lots of friendly guests anxious to get to the concert and the staff was very attentive and supported our desire to get to the concert as early as possible while enjoying our meal.
Good food and service
The noise overwhelmed all other considerations, even though the food was good.
Enjoyed dinner with friends. Everyone loved their food. Cream Brûlée was a rave!
Our order was lost somewhere between waiter and kitchen, about 10 feet away. Took about 2 hours to get our food, then it was undercooked and didn't include everything we ordered. Bar service was equally as abysmal. Asked hostess to send owner over from behind the bar to discuss our concerns. He did not. No accommodation for this horrible dining experience. Avoid this place.
After having made reservations weeks ahead of time we arrived and were seated promptly. The waiter took our order. While we were drinking our beverages a different waiter showed up and asked us to move to another table and SHARE that table with another party of people already seated there! His excuse was the hostess should not have sat us where she did and he wanted to seat 4 people (for himself to wait upon) at our table. This was a date. We did not expect to share a romantic evening with 6 other people. When I asked "what is in it for us" the waiter seemed taken aback. REALLY? Under pressure, he finally conceded to giving us two drinks (one wine, the other was only club soda) and one dessert. Another "table" opened up and we ended up sitting on a couch and eating our meal off of a coffee table. The worst part? Our own waiter had no idea where we had gone! There was NO communication among the staff. He thought we had left! Needless to say, our first course arrived 45 minutes after ordering (while other tables received their meals before us). In the end, our waiter (the first one) was very apologetic and we received our appetizers plus the drink and dessert for free. So things ended up fine (the food was good) BUT it was quite the rodeo to get there.
Food was great! Service was a bit slow. Upstairs table was extremely uncomfortable. Antiques are kitchy, but if you can’t sit with your legs under the table, it might be time to consider replacing it. A very weird, sideward facing meal. They do make agreat Aperol spritz, which made me forgive them a little for the table!
Restaurant was short-staffed, but service did not suffer. Our food varied from excellent (cocktails, gazpacho, bread pudding) to ok (overdone burgers). The place has a fun vibe.
We had high hopes. On the plus side - good cocktails. BUT Risotto and veggie side way over cooked.
We enjoyed our lunch. The service was fast and friendly. The food was tasty, and the price was good. We will be. Back!
2017 experience was variable but generally good with some outstanding. 2018 not so much - all of our food was overcooked and unimaginatively presented.
Alternative dining location. Chautauqua grounds has very few places to eat out at.
A more sophisticated menu than other on campus places. Tight spaces.
Admittedly we got there towards the end of their day, however they were out of a number of things and didn't tell you up front. They also listed ingredients in things, but then the food showed up with different things that were not listed. Their attitude and way of handling the questions and complaints was to seem annoyed and displeased and didn't make any offers on how to make it up to us. The quality of what I DID get was quite good although disappointing because it was not what I had wanted or expected. With some work on the service end of things, this could be a great spot for breakfast, lunch or brunch with a friend.
We come to Chautauqua every year and were pleased to find this much-needed addition to the bar and restaurant scene. Nice bar, good crowd (especially younger people), open late after the Amp programming. We loved the fact that there was live music on the weekends. Food was pretty good. Decent wine list, too. Only two issues: (1) the Open Table listing does not note that the menu is limited after 9 PM. The limitation is no problem, but you should be more clear about this for people who are making a reservation. (2) our server was very nice but inexperienced about the little things--like opening the bottle of wine but then just setting it down instead of letting us taste it or pouring the first glasses. All in all, however, we were very happy with our experience and will be back.
We had trout, salads, and the portabella mushroom sandwich.
The food was very good. We had two wait 25 minutes to get served.
The service was slow and chaotic.
Lunch at 2 Ames is not nearly as good as dinner. The portobello sandwich was okay but had no sides. The bagel with salmon was hard and had tiny pieces of smoked salmon. My sister did like her burger but kept having to ask for condiments. We found it difficult to get the attention of the wait staff. Not a place we would return to for lunch.
Bad service, bad noise level, food fair, not good value
Salmon was perfect. Chicken and grits was poor. Chicken extremely over cooked and dry and grits not cooked all the way. Burger is $18, fries are extra and didn’t come with any fixings. At least the meat was cooked at temperature requested. Don’t go if you’re in a rush, took an hour to get hour food. Still one of the few options available on the grounds but for the price, you might as well make reservations at the Atheneum.
Quirky but a welcome option for a nice dinner on the grounds of Chautauqua. A small menu that covers vegetarians as well as carnivores. Very nice wine list. Servers are very earnest and do a good job dealing with close quarters; a small kitchen and lots of patrons. Make a reservation!!
2 Ames was extremely noisy. It was difficult to hear my companion across the table from me. I ordered a kale salad and was assured by the waiter before our order was taken that the kale was blanched. Clearly it was not blanched. It was very tough and basically inedible. I returned approximately 2/3 of it uneaten. I ordered a hamburger medium/rare. It was served over done. Also, I later learned was to have a dressing added to the hamburger. None was added. Service was extremely spotty.
Didn’t bring drink till meal was almost over. Asked for a medium burger got it rare. Fries had to be sent back twice cause first batch was heavy salt second batch was raw. Soooo tight, noisy and hot. Not worth it.
Excellent food only advice would be to have ice cream on hand and menu items from last year
Ended up at a community table, not what I understood when making reservation. Waiter got half our order wrong and 2 of the 4 in our party ended up with their entrees after the first two had finished their dinner. Food was very good when finally served. Restaurant service very unorganized.
Service was as poor as I ever had. Could not eat my entree. Don’t waste you effort to try 2Ames until you see FAB reviews (this one isn’t).
