Artisan Restaurant at Four Columns
My partner and I were traveling from Seattle and thought this experience would be a enjoyable. It was not. From start to finish our stay and meal was sub-par at most. We both work in the industry and eat at lovely places with regularity, and this place truly is a waste of money and time you could otherwise spend at one of the amazing other Inn's in Vermont.
We were new to this area, having visited for the Marlboro Music Festival and selected Artisan restaurant based on reviews in Open Table and the fact that it took reservations. We are very happy with our choice. The food, ambiance and service were excellent and the prices very reasonable. Our waiter was helpful, prompt and had a nice sense of humor. We look forward to returning during the next Marlboro season.
The menu looked wonderful! The real thing less so. The smoked trout was chewy and unappetizing, topped with some sweet jam that seemed not appropriate. The bloody Marys were great. The service was really friendly but ineffective (forgot to refill coffee, had to ask a couple of times). It was just ok. Not bad, but not great either. Grounds are very pretty.
Phenomenal meal and wonderful atmsohere. We always have such a great time!
It's always a pleasure dining here. The staff is super friendly and while the food has always been good, Chef Erin has really stepped it up. Highly recommend!
We had an outstanding experience at Artisan this past weekend. The food was inventive, supremely fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. The polenta cakes with wild mushrooms were especially memorable, as was the chilled zucchini soup. The ambiance is sophisticated rustic, and we were pleased that the management honored our request for a banquette table. Service was very friendly and attentive, but not hovering. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are anywhere within the vicinity. It's worth going out of your way, and take the time to stroll the gardens which are beautiful.
We’re very happy the inn and restaurant have reopened after being closed for many years.
It’s the most beautiful inn and best restaurant in the area.
Of the 4 meals ordered, 1 (scallops) was excellent, 1 (pork chop) was tasty but quite tough, the other 2 (veal) were only OK. The service was quite slow and we were there for nearly 3 hours. We were reminded a number of times that the kitchen was "backed up" but for the supposed quality and price of the restaurant and food, it was not very acceptable. The noise level was very high and I could hardly hear the person sitting next to me. Finally, a "doggie bag" was requested but not supplied.
Superb dinner. Fresh salad, excellent special striped bass, delicious pasta. Nicer attentive server. Top quality dinner. Recommend highly.
I was invited to join a group of old and new friends, to listen to an awesome Jazz trio, while having some great food at your beautiful location. However, the waitress was new at her job, unsure of certain things on the menu, unable to run far too many tables in her section. Others tried to pick up the slack, however the wrong food came to our table twice, with food then taking more than 45 minutes to arrive; with an unpresentable cheese plate that sat with us the entire night, instead the waitress bringing it back and fixing it. She claimed two old crusty moldy pieces were blue cheese, but they clearly were not. Another was too hard to eat all of it. On top of that the credit card tip was crossed out and a huge cash one left, but my friend was still charged what turned out to be a 55% tip??
I loved cheeseburger, fish and chips, and the special pasta with shrimp and tarragon was amazing. However, the french fries were in a pool of grease.
The music was great, though a bit too loud at first, but that was our fault choosing a corner table where the sound reverberated.
Overall, the food was good, and the manager finally arrived at the end, comped the cheese plate and desert and coffee, but better eyes on the front line should’ve caught the hardened cheeses and the undrained fries.
My wife and I were visiting the area, Stratton Mtn., from NY and were looking for a special place for our anniversary. Friends in Wilmington, Vermont suggested we try here and although our anniversary was the day before, no restaurants of note appeared to be open until at least the 4th of July.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner- both had Duck Breast. Perfectly prepared and delicious!
Our waitress, Susan, was very friendly and conscientious. They brought out a delicious desert for us with Happy Anniversary inscribed in dark chocolate around the edge. Nice touch.
Will be going back again on our next visit to the area.
We had a wonderful dinner at Artisan Cafe. The food, service, and ambiance were all superb. Their seasonal menu keeps us coming back, since it's always changing, and always delicious!
We always leave the Artisan Restaurant at Four Columns Inn thinking this is the best meal ever. Last Saturday it was the Stinging Nettle Fettuccine....excellent.
Excellent food and service
Quaint and historic setting
Bread should come with eggs overlite and not be an extra charge.
THE FOOD WAS GREAT. RESTAURANT AS WELL AS THE INN IS VERY SHORT STAFFED .THE PEOPLE ARE LOVELY. VERY FRIENDLY. NEEDS ATTENTION IN BATHROOM. THE ROOMS NEED BETER HOUSE CLEANING. THE PLACE IS BEAUTIFUL.
Excellent food creatively prepared. Outstanding service.
We loved the ambiance and the food was very fresh, creatively prepared and beautifully presented. However this restaurant needs major help with service. No one was there to greet us, our table wasn’t ready, the waiter forgot to put in our order, and we waited an unconscionable amount of time for our meal, both the appetizers and main course. The waiter was nowhere to be found, served us and charged us for the wrong wine, and we had to ask for butter with our bread and never received it. The waiter did apologize and comped us on dessert. This was our third time eating at this restaurant and the previous time, we waited more than 45 minutes for our table.
The food was beautiful, delicious and creative. I had the scallops for an entree, the smashed duck fat potatoes as a side and a chocolate mouse for desert. All were superb. The wine was expensive but very good.
My husband and I love going here for our date nights! Absolutely love the fish and chips, the fries that come with it are like no other fry I have ever had! Mind blowing! I highly recommend sitting out on the deck, the landscaping is beautiful along with the pond.
Mother's day brunch, mom said best brunch ever! Great choices on menu, excellent deserts. This was our 2nd time here for brunch. Exceptional food and service both times. We stayed overnight here last year and had dinner and breakfast. All meals were exceptional.
Amazing food and atmosphere. Staff are very welcoming and accomodating
Exceptional eggs, but the brunch corned beef hash lacked beef. The venison sausage was dry and under-spiced. The coffee was on a par with Dunks, and the tea bags were wimpy. Brunch portions were okay but not large. You won't leave hungry, but you will be so by dinner time. Parking lot is mostly unpaved.
I had the duck which was amazing! I usually don’t like duck but my server said I should try it and I am glad I did. All their food comes from local farms which is also a plus in my eyes.
Lovely place, great food, friendly staff, beautiful room, kitchen a little slow getting food out, but overall a good experience
We had a great brunch here - $17.00 includes coffee/tea and a mimosa or bloody mary, which we thought was quite reasonable The food offerings were diverse and really good. I had steak and eggs, my wife had smoked salmon with eggs and a salad. The space is really nice, the service was friendly and attentive. We'll be back!
Great place to enjoy dinner and brunch. Good place to have a conversation while dinning. Very good service made for a great experience.
It was fine. Food is that rustic-NE heavy, which would be good if you were coming in from a day of skiing. Very meat oriented. No problem, just no wow. There are some really great restaurants in Brattleboro, so the next time we are going to drop $140 for two (shared starter, no dessert), I would head for one of those instead.
Traveled an hour and a half to get there from home, but was well worth our drive, overall! Enjoyed the shared “special” Valentine’s evening dinner... food was excellent, served exactly as we ordered it, and our server was very pleasant and personable, although service did bog down when the place got busier, so at times was a bit slower getting food out to diners, than we would have hoped. Terrific value, for such a reasonable cost! ... the shared Chateaubriand 3-course dinner for two (drinks not included) at only $99 would be hard to beat! Would have enjoyed more organic vegetables offered as extra available sides, but we were not disappointed with the menu, otherwise. Everything was delicious!! Great ambiance and warmth provided by a large wood-burning fireplace in the diningroom, much appreciated as parking lot was pretty full even by 6pm, so required a very chilly walk at night, from a far off parking spot, for my husband. There was, however, a convenient circular drop-off area right by the entrance door to both the Tavern/bar and Diningroom, which I so appreciated. Also note that cell-phone service out that way is “ sketchy” at best in places, around and outside of Brattleboro, so our several calls to let them know we would be a few minutes late for our reservation went either “unable to connect”, or into a frustrating and endless loop of voice mails that we later mentioned, and found out that no one checks messages there, timely enough to be helpful. Nonetheless, we hope to be returning for dinner in the spring, and are already looking forward!!
Loved the ambiance, great testing food. Only vine list could use a critical review to improve. Somewhat remote location - but I consider that a plus ! Picture perfect Vermont!
My husband and I stayed at The Four Columns Inn for a weekend stay. This restaurant was great. My husband got the duck and I got the bolganese. His meal was amazing! I found my pasta dish to be very different. It had a smoky flavor (it wasn’t what I was expecting like a tradional bolognese) The second night I got the southern fried chicken and he got the grass fed burger in the tavern. Both were excellent! Overall very good. The service was better in the tavern.
Beautiful restaurant owned by the Four Columns Inn in Newfane, VT. Elegant, well-thought-out cuisine with local ingredients and superb service. I would love to go back!
This is a special place. The chef trained at some great restaurants in Boston and she has taken her skills to this lovely spot in Vermont. The same meal in Boston would cost a lot more! Fireplace and decor make it a cozy spot. Don't miss the scallops!
Through life I have been lucky enough to dine in some very good restaurants in several countries, and without hesitation, rate the Artisan at Four Columns among the very best, the chef is ingenious and each preparation is exquisite.
As someone else said I'll be back
New Year’s Eve dinner was quite good and plentiful. Service was attentive and friendly but not gracious. Wine list was sub-par and over priced (we had a $48 Cote du Rhône that retails for $14).
The restaurant seemed a bit disorganized with the reservations. We had been promised one table but had to settle for a different one.
For breakfast in the cold winter, it would be very nice to have the fire place going, as it is for dinner.
Brunch in the tavern was excellent. Burger was perfectly prepared and fries were nice and crispy.
We went here for dinner with family and were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was. Food was excellent, room was beautiful, and the service was great. We highly recommend.
I think the restaurant was over rated which raised our expectations. The price was pretty much in line with food quality. A pate was disappointing as were some sides like polenta which was inedible and broccoli which had a burned taste. I think the restaurant is best suited to larger groups rather than intimate dinning.
Beautiful setting and dining room. Excellent menu and the food was fabulous! Great service too.
My husband and I went here and had an overall incredible experience. We had a gift certificate to spend so we tried to sample a large amount of items. The ambiance is wonderful, and the way the space is decorated is truly pleasing. Our server was an older gentleman, very professional and kind. He offered excellent service throughout the meal. We started with a cocktail each. They are very decently priced and the options are great. We then each chose a soup: the bisque that was the evening's special, and the seafood chowder. Both were incredible...we were somewhat in awe of how good they were in fact...Next we had the Burrata which was delicious and an ample service for an appetizer. For our entrees I had the sea scallops with a butternut squash risotto...incredible. The dish was served with four MASSIVE scallops and a huge portion of risotto (I had been worried that because it is an upscale spot our portions would have left us wanting more). I ended up taking half home and having it for lunch the next day, so it was like two meals in one. My husband ordered the pork loin which came with a sweet potato puree and brussels sprouts. He absolutely loved it all. We also got two sides: seasonal veg (maple roasted delicata squash, and truffle fries. Both were excellent as well, and the portions were not skimpy. We were too full to have dessert, but it all looked delicious. The wine menu is extensive as well..I don't have anything bad to say about this experience. The food is just incredible. We highly recommend!
Had a fabulous night celebrating my 2 favorite people's birthday.
Food was excellent, service outstanding and the bar entertainment after dinner was the icing on the cake.
Presently my favorite restaurant in the area.
Bravo to The Artisan Restaruant at Four Columns.
