Benne on Eagle

Delicious food, although a bit over salted. The biscuits were amazing! Sunday brunch on their patio was lovely, except deathly quiet. A little music for ambiance would have been wonderful.
I’m a local and always loved this restaurant. The last time we had a mediocre meal but I don’t allow one experience to discourage me from returning We were gravely disappointed with our experience last night. We booked through OpenTable and didn’t realize all tables were outdoors. While this would have been a preference we didn’t bring a parka so it was quite cold for outdoor dining.
The food was average at best and not worth the price. We got the Liver and Pickles appetizer. Liver was delicious but the plate wasn’t worth $17. I had the oxtail. Very interesting dish and quite tasty but the white rice wasn’t something I would accompany this dish with. Mashed potatoes would have been better. My friend got the skirt steak. It was prepared to our liking but was tough, stringy and tasteless. Our knives couldn’t cut through the meat. We expressed our disappointment to our server and he simply said he would let the chef know. No change in a meal or even free coffee.
Unfortunately, I won’t be returning and won’t recommend this to guests either. There are so many consistently good restaurants in Asheville and sadly this is not one of them.
Great food!!! I had a vegetarian dish - Coconut Cury Collards with Red Rice - It was AMAZING!!!! My husband had the pork chop and for appetizers we shared Fried Okras - All of it was excellent.
Before going, I read mutiple reviews saying the food was too salty... and yep too salty. The portion sizes were pitiful. The saving graces were that the setting was near perfect (needed some music) and the cocktails were excellent.
My wife and I were in town for a few days for our anniversary and decided to save Benne for last. We definitely saved the best for last. The service was amazing and professional. The food was absolutely amazing!!
We have been wanting to get to Benne on Eagle since they opened. Due to work and COVID we have had little opportunity to go. We were thrilled that Benne had reopened for dining. I reserved a table outside for my wife’s birthday for brunch. We were pleasantly greeted and seated and it began to rain. We were not under cover and although it was not raining hard, the host offered to let us move inside since we had made a reservation ( they were also aware of the occasion). All safety protocols were followed and we had a delightful meal. Everything was done with casual elegance and we were made to feel at home. I am in the business as well, and greatly appreciate the hoops that restaurants have to go through to provide a safe, comfortable and inviting experience with remarkable food. Thank you Benne on Eagle.
Celebrated our anniversary at a table for two, on the outside patio. Proper social distancing. Gracious host. Food was authentic, soul food; delicious. Took a picture with Chef Ashleigh Shanti!
Great food and service! We really enjoyed the Liver and Pickles. The steak and pork were awesome and cooked perfectly!
The food was absolutely incredible, our server was non attentive, the outside patio area was great, the desserts were very unimpressive. But the food was good enough to make up for the poor service and bad desserts.
Wonderful dinner experience in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended!
We are foodies and we’re obsessed with Benne, the chef and staff. Outdoor dining was amazing and safe during Covid. Excellent choice for a dining experience.
Our experience was great! The food was perfect, and the presentation was elegant. We’ll definitely be back!
Wonderful! Small plates. The salad and chicken skin was delicious. We really enjoyed the Mac and cheese, cocktails and everything was great!
Food was very tasty. The blueberry cocktail was simply delicious.
This trendy new restaurant is the hottest place in Asheville. But I realized the "soul food" was exactly what the school cafeteria workers made in deep south Georgia. The Beef Cheeks were tender and delicious but gelatinous and basically pot roast. Collard greens and chicken skin...soup beans. All are good but cheap food for big prices. The setting is great in the newly upgraded warehouse district. Go for the atmosphere and have a drink and share the Mac and cheese!
High prices, mediocre food. Menu was blah! Not up to Asheville standards
Brunch was fantastic!!! French toast, pork and watermelon toast, and the sorghum grain and vegetable hash were all outstanding plates of food. Very reasonable prices too.
I loved this place! The best biscuits I have ever had and I eat a lot of biscuits, lol! The waitress was so sweet. We actually set at a high top table in front by Eagle St but it was nice an cool, not load, not much traffic going by so I actually preferred it over the back patio. I got brunch reservations at the last minute which was awesome because there was at least an hour wait at every other place and I think we ended up at the best place in town!
Each time we come to Asheville, we plan an evening at Benne. This visit was special because we ate outside in a cool breeze and felt very safe, and musicians entertained from the courtyard. Service was excellent, prompt, and attentive. All that said, our food was good but not the best we've had there. Chops were a bit dry and cabbage pancake just not as tasty as we hoped, but that is based on our preference and not the preparation. Still, Benne is our favorite eat-out in Asheville.
We really enjoyed the food at Benne but the service was very slow. Also my Trout and Scallops were yummy and well cooked but the sauce was over salted in my opinion. However the Cabbage Mushroom Pancake is a MUST! It was fantastic and like nothing I have ever eaten. We will definitely eat here again next time we stay at The Foundry in Asheville.
Indeed one of our top three meals while staying at The Foundary in Asheville.
We had breakfast three mornings in a row here... sausage breakfast sandwich with a delicious house made English muffin OR equally delicious biscuit....and the GRITS , OMG....so good.
I was blown away with the collard green and chicken skin salad with nectarines and a saladdressing that is orgasmic! (Recipe PLEASE!)
We also had the fantastic oxtail and carolina rice!
And that Hummingbird Cake with bananas was out of control!
Congratulations to the Chef and staff! Everything was on point! Nehemiah,Shay and Ebony were amazing front of house that waited on us.
Keep up the great work!
Food was tremendous great social distancing. All outside on a beautiful night in Asheville.
Delicious and great outdoor patio brunch.
Great staff, meal and experience! A true Soul food experience! Highly recommend!
Keep in mind that these are pandemic times, so dining is outside. You'll need to go through the courtyard alley to check in with the host, but we were seated streetside. Our server Ty was awesome. He had great suggestions, and made sure we understood what we were ordering. We had the pina colada soda cocktail, which was delightfully refreshing. The yeast rolls were delicious, and my husband's porkchop was beautifully marbled and well seasoned. I had the oxtails because oxtail is my favorite dish and rather difficult to find. It was the best version of oxtail I've had to date. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the outer cartilage caps were deliciously caramelized. The gravy packed a perfect, herbaceous punch that complemented both the meat and rice beautifully. This was by far the best dining experience we had on our trip to Asheville. Can't wait to come back.
Nicely done outdoor patio to feel safe while enjoying tasty food and a well curated wine by the glass.
Made me forget about the insanity we are living with right now! Thank you Ashely for another delightful meal.
Sapporah provided us with excellent service; in fact the whole team flowed flawlessly throughout the meal, which made for an incredible experience.
Service was outstanding as usual!
The food and service were excellent. The best meal we’ve had in Asheville.
Delicious food and wine! Love the atmosphere and service was exceptional.
Excellent upscale soul food, true to its roots , beautiful patio
Excellent food, very thoughtful wine list, very good waiter
We were visiting from out of town and I found Benne on Eagle a through an article and fit in my magazine. I was worried it would not live up to the hype in the article and I did not need to worry. The food was fresh, unique, and well prepared. The fried chicken my friend had was amazing. I do not say that lightly, it was crispy on the outside juicy on the inside and beautifully spiced and flavored. My hash was a nice twist on a classic dish. We came for brunch and if I’m back in Asheville I will make a point to come for dinner. The service was efficient, friendly and very knowledgeable. Overall, this is a great little restaurant that I’m so glad that I visited.
We understand with Covid that dining outside is preferred. You should have some fans in the area because it was extremely hot being on a courtyard that’s enclosed by buildings.
Fans are inexpensive and help cool down.
Had a great experience, they accommodated us getting in early for our reservation with options on seating outside or inside. Sever was great and very knowledgeable about Gluten-free options in each dish. Enjoyed the experience Very much, felt things were a bit pricey for the food we did get and plates were fairly simple dishes...that would be the only negative but flavor was great and drinks were amazing.
Great food and service!
The upside: our server was fantastic. He was very friendly and prompt. The downside: the menu was quite limited due to COVID (not going to fault them for that, since most are scaling back) however, the issue was that all of the key dishes that prompted us to choose this restaurant were not on the menu. They did not have scallops or steak or many of the food items shown in photos on here. We ended up ordering a few appetizers that were fine, but not great. Very greasy/oily, not sure which is the better description. I had to fold up my paper menu and put it under the appetizer board because liquid was dripping off of it onto the grated outdoor table and I didn’t want it to get on my shoes or clothes. We were sat outside on a table on the street with an umbrella. When it started raining I thought it would be a disaster, but it was actually nice. Maybe I missed seeing the scaled back menu online, which is on me.
very nicely set up for social distancing on the back, covered patio. we appreciated that! the food was excellent, as always.
We had a truly exceptional culinary experience! The wings were insanely good, the mushrooms and cabbage pancake was huge and very delicious. We had the trout and oxtail too. Both were so good that I did a little happy dance with my feet under the table after each bite.
Wonderful meal, inventive and always a lesson in local food culture. Outside has been well appointed and makes dining enjoyable. Looking forward to returning.
