Located on Eagle Street, hub of the historic area of downtown Asheville known as The Block; Benne on Eagle is helmed by 5-time James Beard-nominated chef John Fleer (Rhubarb, The Rhu) and Chef de Cuisine Ashleigh Shanti (Eater Young Gun 2019). Meant to honor the African-American influence on Appalachian cuisine, Benne on Eagle serves up modern soul food that nods to West African roots using local ingredients.

I only have incredible things to say about Benne. The food was incredible. It was cooked to perfection with a wonderful combination of spices and flavors. And for me, best of all, the menu contains food you would not find anywhere else, or combinations that are out of the ordinary. Service was also great, attentive without being bothersome. We highly recommend Benne and will definitely go back.

My husband and I took an out-of-town guest to Benne on Eagle, and all three of us thought it was outstanding. We each got a different entree, and we tried everyone else’s, and all of us loved all of them. We also loved the deviled egg appetizer and all three of the desserts they had featured. There are lots of good places to eat in Asheville, but this is one of the great ones!

I was a little surprised that we were disappointed in almost everything in our meal except the Hasan's fish cakes and the foie gras, which the type of bread it was on was FANTASTIC.

We got a dish with rutebega where it was extremely hard, and then we also got a dish with carolina rice where the rice seemed undercooked as well. It was a lovely restaurant and our server couldn't have been better, but we had both really been hyped up on the restaurant so it definitely did not meet that expectation and I don't think I'd go again.

Overall, a meh experience. One dish out of three was good. The other two were lukewarm, at best. Service wasn’t up to par, and considering the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full, that should be unacceptable. I know this has been listed as one of the top ten in Asheville, but this visit does not explain why.

Service was excellent, as was the cocktail selection and appetizers (recommend cabbage pancake and fish/waffle)! My shrimp entree was excellent and presented well. The quality of food prep, ambiance etc was great. The variety of menu entree selections was limited, and pretty mainstay. Felt differently about other menu items. Will return in near future.

The food is outstandingly good, in keeping with the high standards of Asheville’s better restaurants. Further, it fills a unique spot a suns ale Souther African-American fare. We enjoyed the shrimp dish and the pork. Both well seasoned with just enough kick to provide additional interest.

Staff is attentive and friendly.

We have two suggestions: a better and stronger decaf coffee would help end the meal in keeping with the delicious food.
Also, a second set of entry doors to provide an air-lock would prevent cold air coming in as patrons come and go, make the interesting and attractive space more comfortable.

Truly a wonderful addition to Asheville and
It’s heritage.

Was so excited to eat here, but the food was lackluster. The pork and sweet potato dumplings (gnocchi) were good but there was barely anything but pork on the plate. The NC SHRIMP AND SCALLOP PURLOO was a darn shame waste of money. There were no scallops... the rice and it’s contents were so hard they were almost inedible. Cocktails were great though.

Special menu wasn’t special, sirloin steak portion was tiny, rice under the fish wasn’t cooked all the way and hard, cake dessert was stale and cheese cake sat out way too long. server knew nothing about the menu, was lazy and took too long for every request. It was way over priced and very disappointed for a Valentine’s Day menu. Won’t be back and won’t suggest to anyone. When we complained to server he just shrugged and said sorry..didn’t ask a manager and wasn’t going to waste my time by then. $170plus tab should be worth $170. I wouldn’t have paid $20 knowing what I know now.

We had reservations for Valentine’s Day for the four-course, $65/person menu. The service at Benne on Eagle was not an issue. Our server, Allie, was great and was the nicest part of the experience. My first course was the carrots and they were cold and completely overpowered by the flavor of liquid smoke. My husband got quail for the second course, which was also cold, and served over potatoes, which were undercooked and cold. My main entree was a fried snapper over coconut rice. The snapper was not seasoned at all and the rice was so undercooked it was still crunchy. My husband’s main entree was the koji beef with brassicas. The entire dish was ICE cold. The beef was rubbery and heavily seasoned with salt. Overall, for the amount of money spent and the fact that we had to put down a credit card just to make a reservation, we had high expectations for the meal. Our reservation was for 9pm and it was very obvious that the food was already cooked long before we arrived. We travel to Asheville often and we have had many wonderful dining experiences but this was extremely disappointing. We do not plan to return.

Ate there on Valentine's Day and they were only serving a 4 course prix fixe menu. It was pricey but very original, delicious and satisfying, with great service by our waitstaff Ebony. Our first foray into "Afri-lachian" cuisine wad well worth the splurge.

One of the worst meals I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Cold dishes, dried out and unseasoned meats, and indifferent service (no explanation about what we were served, no offer to get a second drink). All this for $200 for two after tax and tip.

The only bright spot was dessert, which was exceptional. Other than that, I left feeling cheated. Unacceptable for a meal at this price point.

The food was tasty and well prepared, service was excellent. Our only complaint was the trout filet was tiny, smallest I’ve ever seen served for a main course; looks like they cut the fillet in quarters. The shrimp dish was excellent and full of flavor.
