Amazing food and great service! Wish the portions were a bit bigger, but quality was outstanding!

We are regulars at Bistro Sakana and it is always very good, however the service can be hit and miss and on this occasion the service was definitely less than great. Not so bad as to deter us from coming again but for such a good place like this, it’d be nice if the service was as high quality as the food.
Rolls are terrible!!
Service is the highlight of the restaurant. The Japanese fishes are the best here. The rolls however, are the worst.
The avocado falls apart on the caterpillar roll, the crispy rolls are not crispy, The spicy rolls with no spice inside them and rather they are on the side. The presentation is even worse as they look like supermarket rolls trying to be upscale. A messy black sauce drawing on a black plate topped with messy rolls.
Food is unique and tasty. The wagyu stone grill was tender and marbling. The atmosphere is relaxing and beautiful.
Food is Always great. Service is always a bit strange. The tables seem to be attended by multiple servers and not a dedicated one. I think at some point someone decided it’d be more efficient but it clearly isn’t. The service is typically always a mess. I come back due to the food quality but the front of house team needs a proper manager
It was a great experience. Their course menu is wonderful! Will be coming again soon.
The food is amazing!! Some of the best Japanese food in Vancouver (and there is a lot). The tables are crammed together so be ready to overhear everything your neighbours have to say as well. But the food makes the overcrowding easier to deal with.
Bistro Sakana is a wonderful Japanese restaurant in Yaletown serving fresh fish from Toyosu fish market in Tokyo. Their menu is quite extensive, including omakase and the quality of their sushi is top notch. We enjoy sitting by the sushi bar to see the sushi chefs at work, marvelling at their attention to detail. Our favourite is the gindara aburi sushi. Everything they serve is fresh, and they take pride in their craft, as can be seen in their presentation. All the servers are polite and accommodating. The restaurant is small, and the space is tight. It’s probably best to order a little bit at a time, as there isn’t much real estate on the table for all the food you want to order. The washroom is shared with the restaurant next door, which is not ideal, as there is only two washrooms and you need to go out of the restaurant with a key.
I haven't been here for awhile for business reasons and I was hyped to revisit my favourite all time Japanese restaurant. While most food here is pretty good, I can recognize that they now have a non Japanese sushi chef. His rolls just seem to fall apart and the presentation is simply lacking. Not only that the Salmon Aburi which used to be so popular here has become very mediocre. The Toro Aburi has especially become worse.
I used to come here three times a week and spend hundreds just for some salmon and toro aburi and Japanese fish.
As a positive note the ambiance and service is good.
was my first dine out vancouver experience. maybe i expected too much, but i thought paying 45 dollars would at least get me some decent quality sushi. well i was wrong. this place is only good for happy hour

DINE OUT NEEDS A CHANGE
I often enjoy eating here but dine out is disappointing and is going downhill because the dine out menu follows a similar template from past years.
It is always a salad of fish with dressing, sushi plate, fancy mixed box of assortments, and sometimes the beef houbouyaki.
I understand the quality of ingredients are high but at least the sushi chefs should show some creativity rather than recycle old ideas. At least the box coming from the kitchen at least changes somewhat.
As an experienced restaurant owner I know that sushi chefs should be the star because they are handsomely paid to be the star.
The service is good though especially the ones that can speak english.
I am just rating on my experience today of the food. This does not reflect on the restaurant as a whole.
I saw reviews online saying the food is good. Honestly the food is quite bad and I believe I can get the same quality from another restaurant for half the price. The fish is not fresh. The dish choices are very boring. I would not recommend at all
Food-wise, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant. My wife and I wanted a bit more home-style Japanese food for dinner so we looked into Minami but they didn't offer the dine out menu for dinners. So naturally, Bistro Sakana was our second choice. We looked at the google reviews and saw it was pretty split between great and mediocre, and since it seemed like more of a sushi place we didn't expect anything. But boy, we were stunned at their quality of food! Japanese cuisine is my favourite cuisine which I would like to consume every day, if possible. I love all of the aspects of their cuisine especially the home cooking part. Sushi-wise, I have had some great omakase in New York and their sushi was pretty up there. Their wasabi was very flavourful (has a sweet note) and I wanted to have some more. I loved the 3rd course which came with a variety of small dishes with tonjiru and rice. The tonjiru was fantastic. I loved the scallop with spicy sauce the most, then the tako, which was a "omakase mystery" item. Beef shabu shabu was my least favourite. I didn't like the dressing because it was too nutty for my taste. I would've liked a ponzu dressing. I gave 3 starts for service because my wife ordered the sake pairing and two of her sakes kept turning up late. All the sakes were excellent in terms of pairing and flavour. And yes it was a busy Friday night, but we wished the sakes were brought to the table at the same time when each course was delivered to our table and not like 10 minutes later or until I asked them to. And one of the servers even tried to lecture us by saying we had to purchase the sake pairing, which we obviously did. Although we might not look it but we are both intellectuals with high educations and we don't take lecturing that well. However, I rate this restaurant high purely because of the quality of food. They can train their staff a bit better.
Expected it to be far more expensive than it was, especially for the quality of food. Great ambiance. Thoroughly enjoyed my first dining experience here.
Had not been to Bistro Sakana for a few years and decided to try it during Dine Out Vancouver 2020. We were pleasantly surprised it was still the same excellence in food, menu and service. Will definitely recommend this restaurant and be on our “favourites” list.
Tried this place with Dine Out Vancouver. Sushi pieces were good but not outstanding; the teishoku set that followed was nicely presented and the flavour was balanced. Really well done! The service however was a joke. We added sake pairing. The drinks were served without tasting notes. Servers tried to clear away our glasses without asking before we could finished them. To top it off, the servers couldn’t keep track of the bill. (I was asked to pay twice.)
Food and service was good, price was in the high side. Sake selection is excellent.
Well curated dishes with wonderful varied flavours, textures and dishes. Presentation is beautiful with good attention to detail.
First two courses are good, but the rest of the dishes were just ok...so quite disappointed.
At first, I was really impressed and really liking everything about the place. Unfortunately, after the 1st dine out course, we didn't receive the 2nd dine out course until 40 minutes later. They seemed to forget about us and didn't realize it until my face was grumpy. We thought it was taking long because it was a full house and they were constantly rushing/serving so we didn't ask. It was only until they finally noticed we were without any dish for so long and asked if we were doing okay and we had to inform them that we didn't even get our second dish. Right after that, our dishes came out within 5 minutes and due to the long wait, we were unable to enjoy the food.
I love their Happy hour menu, it’s very reasonable and good size.
The reason why I gave -1 star was my beer. I ordered $4 beer so I didn’t expect much but 1/3 of my glass was foam and was not cold at all. I told a server that was too much foam but she didn’t understand what I meant. That was very disappointing but other than that, it was ok.
Must try! Very good service and many selection of food. Creative and good presentation. Fresh food.
Love the food at Bistro Sakana! The scallop motoyaki is absolutely addictive, and the smoked pork belly is flavorful and tender!

Bistro Sakana has excellent food and service. The king salmon kama and cod kama were the best that we have ever tasted. Hope others will come to try.
Very great service and food as per usual - this place never fails to impress diners and foodies. Seating arrangement is slightly tight and more oriented to that of a coffee shop, but it is an acceptable trade-off considering the restaurant is in the heart of Yaletown. The waiters and waitresses here are all very friendly and will take good care of you
The fish is excellent and fresh. Service was friendly and accommodating. Menu impeccable. Sake menu vast and exciting. Love their aburi sushi. Can’t wait to go back!
The sushi was excellent, but the tempura was TERRIBLE!!! It was very greasy and tasted doughy.

Love this spot, great food always fresh and creative. It is a bit noisy but what place isn't these days.
We brought friends from out of town and they loved it. This restaurant is great value and the food is always consistent. I recommend reservations as it is busy.
Very good quality
The food here is delicious and appreciate the fact they have brown rice option for their sushi. Service is great and attentive. Special shout out to the scallop motoyaki and smoked pork belly dish, both are a must try!

Once again, Sakana delivers. Guests from Australia, Toronto and locals were all very pleased with the food. Made me look good because I was doing the ordering for 9 people. The bistro style seating did make it difficult to hear down the table, but that would be true in most restaurants. The wait staff kept an eye out for my next round of orders or wine, and several favourites really pleased everyone: Citrus ginger hamachi is an amazing combination. The salmon aburi was so good that the guests called our for more. The crunchy filo prawns and scallop were gone in a flash of texture and flavour. I rounded the meal out with some tuna and salmon sashimi was simple but so very fresh. I will be back, as usual, next time I am in Vancouver.
