Food was excellent service was very good. Unfortunately there are not many folks in the restaurant.
I love Bistro Sancerre. As I've said to friends, never before have I wanted to order everything on the menu. And everything I've ordered has been superb. The only drawback to this visit was that there were not enough servers for the number of people eating outside. Thus, service was slow. But the server was aware and apologetic. Excellent food helped mitigate this deficiency.
Though this restaurant is fairly new they have mastered the customer service, ambiance, and food preparation! We wanted a new dining experience in this area for our Birthday celebrations and it was phenomenal.....we will be back! Thanks William.
Food was excellent. Service was nice but erratic, could use a little polish. The restaurant interior is nice but the lighting level is too bright for a restaurant at the level this one aspires to.
Unfortunately the LED lights that they required us to put in, which are great for power purposes, don't dim. We put some grates over them to reduce the light level and I am going to hang some grape vines over them as well which will cut down their light.
went for an anniversary dinner. It was lovely and the waiter could not have been nicer. definitely a return location!
This was our first time at the Bistro. We had the escargot to start. They lack sufficient butter and garlic and had to ask them to provide more. We both had Caesar salad with anchovies. Both were served without the anchovies and we again had to ask for them. My wife had the rockfish and I had the monk fish as entrees. While properly cooked, both lacked flavor. For a French restaurant they seemed to be light on seasoning on everything. They had a nice wine selection, but the prices in our opinion were slightly higher than in other French restaurants we have tried. We won’t go back in the near future, but may try again down the road to see if they have gotten their act together.
Really wanted to like this place. However since our first visit quality of the food and service have gone down hill. We asked for bread and waited over 20 minutes for it. They were out of my first entree choice at 7:00 on Friday night.
I have dined at the bistro several times for dinner and will enthusiastically return in future and recommend the bistro to others.
2nd time there. This time outside. Short on staff. Waiter had multiple tables and could not keep up.
Nothing to make me want to rush back other than it was a beautiful evening and patio very nice.
Went for restaurant week in Alexandria. Food was very good but the service was slow...painfully slow. It was disappointing because this could have become a mainstay for us.
The wine selection process was fun and I wanted to love this place. But...The kitchen forgot to fire a couple of our party’s appetizers and our waiter, who was pleasant and present when we first sat down, sort of disappeared so we had no idea what the issue was until we went to the bar to ask to see a manager. Bummer.
Really good food and great service. Highly recommend.
Great food and great ambiance. Menu piqued my curiosity to return again.
The steak was too salty but the appetizers (Scallop Risotto, White Wine mussels) were more delicious than the main dish.
This was our first visit and I will not plan to go back. Food was only OK, but the restaurant is rather sterile, lacks atmosphere.
I am surprised that you thought the restaurant was sterile. We get many compliments that it is the most beautiful restaurant that they have ever dined in with the black and straw gold color motif, stone columns and fireplace, wood floors, and art from the most famous romantic and figurative artist in the world, I quite agree. The ceilings are high for a more open feel, but above the blackout line it is covered with acoustic panels to prevent any echoing.
What a great addition to Alexandria! will definitely be back for dinner next time so I can enjoy your incredible wine selection as well!
A great find in Old Town. One of the more unique French Restaurants I have been to with an assortment of delicious food and wines. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to go back to try a few more of the items on the menu. The Steak, Fois Gras, French Onion Soup, and the Lamb were all incredible and reasonably priced for the quality of the food. I plan to go back to try the rest of the food, but this place is definitely on my go to restaurant in Alexandria.
Chef needs to improve
The restaurant is large and well-appointed on the inside including an art gallery area for both paintings and sculptures. It was a nice treat to view this area with a glass of wine of which there is a huge selection. The outside seating area is also large and is part of bigger quad area with trees and a center water fountain. Given the nice weather during the visit, this setup makes for a quiet and serene dinning experience. There is nothing else really like it in the Old Town area. There is no traffic noise or exhaust fumes as with the eateries along King Street.
The food quantity, quality and preparation were outstanding with the main course being the New York Strip steak. Even though steaks can be ordered plain, several sauces are offered. The Cognac Peppercorn sauce is highly recommended and paired well with the red wine. The Brussels Sprout side dish was uniquely prepared allowing the seared balsamic flavor to be evenly distributed. The dessert were the Profiteroles with a flakey pastry and vanilla bean ice cream very reminiscent of the type offered in France. The accompanied warm sauce was made with a large amount of dark chocolate providing an intense flavor when poured over the cream filled pastry. Bistro Sancerre is unique in the Old Town area and will be visited again.
This was a nice, quiet place to have dinner. The wine selection is impressive, the atmosphere is romantic and artsy, and the ribeye, I swear, is the best I've ever had. Overall, I had a really great dinner with good service and better food.
Fabulous Happy Hour!!
This was our second visit. In the five months between visits it seems they made their menu focus more on being a "steak house" than a French bistro. This didn't feel like the gourmet experience we had on our first visit. Instead it was fine, but nothing unique to write home about.
Thanks for your review. You are right we do have quite an array of Steaks. But I would think the below list of a few of our menu items makes me confused about not being a French Bistro. Cheese & Charcuterie Foie Gras Escargot French Onion Soup Tomato Goat cheese tart Salad Lyonnasie Warm Brie Salad Rack of Lamb Duck Breast Herb Roasted Chicken As well as our many steaks and other items. Perhaps there is a restaurant around with more French Dishes, but I have not been able to find it.
Casual date night. Loved the wine, food and jazz music. It was a very enjoyable evening
Glad you had a good time. We are running a special right now for $2 off happy hour food items.
Interesting sprawling space, food was flavorful and good, diverse wine selection. Service needs to be more customer friendly rather than seeming to be an 'effort' to ask for addtl items or questions but realize it is still 7 months new. Will try again during the fall-winter menu. Validated parking is helpful!
There were five us for a business dinner and everyone was extremely pleased. They have a great menu that is sure to please everyone - a nice variety. The wine selection is great! Our server was very knowledgeable about food and wine and was very efficient and friendly. Highly recommend.
Hi Audrey, Glad you enjoyed your dinner. We are running a special right now for $2 off happy hour food items. -Troy
Food was quite good. Service not so much. Was very slow, un knowledgeable, and inattentive.
Horrible slow service. Steak was over cooked. Had to wait for drinks. Finished my whole meal before my drink refill arrived. Foie gras was greasy and burnt. Asparagus wilty. Bill was wrong. Nothing went right with this meal. Restaurant was only half full. Now I know why. I’d hate to see how the service and food is when the place is full.
Had made a reservation but took a long long time to be seated in an empty restaurant. Food quite good and brought out quickly. Nice place but just nothing distinctive.
Great evening with business colleagues. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and unhurried pace. Our team will be back again!
Great choice for a team luncheon. Sat outside and enjoyed great weather, food and service. My team loved it and we will be back! Thanks
Great breads. Great flights of wines. Worth going for those two reasons. Excellent service but entrees were slow coming out. Food good but we’ve had better. On balance, you should try it.
Just please do not send the cook out to greet guests. He is very unpleasant and we suspected that he was drunk. His presence made an enjoyable meal and evening a bit unpleasant We really just do not like him!
Took a friend to lunch at Bistro Sancerre for her birthday (at her request). As always, lovely food, lovely service. Perfect lunch. I've been there four times now for lunch (have not yet been there for dinner), once with five other women and the other three times with just one other person. I can always count on an excellent, unrushed meal with excellent service. Love this restaurant!
Good quality food. Very quiet on a Sunday night. Good place for sitting and talking with friends. Menu could be a little more expansive especially for appetizers.
Wonderful dining experience. The food was beautifully presented and was excellent!
Our party of six were celebrating a family member receiving an award and had reservations for a Monday night. It was slow night due to the storms in the area so the restaurant was quiet which made for easy conversation among the group. Upon entering Bistro Sancerre you are impressed by the wine selection, which you can browse and make your selection for dinner, which we did. We found a Chilean Pinot Noir that was enjoyable for red and non red enthusiasts The menu has a French inclination. We ordered crab cakes w/crostini and ahi tuna tartare. The crab was delicious but the tuna with avacado and chive emulsion was the star of our starter selection. Several in the group ordered the Rockfish with lobster and all were pleased. Others ordered beef selections that were cooked to individual preference and were generous in portion. The peach crisp with lemon sorbet was a ingenious twist on a southern favorite. The creme brulee didn't disappoint. Bistro Sancerre was great for dinner and would be a nice place after work to have a glass of wine and small plate.
Nice, simple French food in a pretty restaurant in a not so pretty part of Alexandria (though close to King Street and King Street metro).
We enjoyed a quiet dinner, on the patio. Staff were very friendly and engaging. Food was very good. Wish they would offer Pilsner Urquell as a beer selection.
The outside seating area provided shade due to the surrounding buildings. The water fountain behind us created a nice background sound and visual.
For starters we had the French onion soup, crab cakes and frog legs. The frog legs were the only item we had that I would not want again. The breading was overwhelming for such a petite amount of meat.
I had the steak and fries and enjoyed it, but my son had the trout and it was awesome. My wife’s rockfish was also good.
The server was wonderful. The rest of the staff was attentive and everyone worked together to make sure we always had everything we needed.
Look forward to returning.
Good food at a reasonable price and well prepared and served. Wine is a little on the expensive side with not many moderately priced bottles. Very big space but high ceilings and design make noise a problem. Love the out door patio dining. Great to have in the neighborhood.
