Black Rock - Utica - PRIORITY SEATING
Food was good and so was the service.
What can I say. This was our first time (and last time) dining at Black Rock. My husband and I went to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary. We were seated promptly (used priority seating). We waited for close to 10 min for a server to come to the table. When she finally showed, she was pretty curt with us. No name, no polite greeting, no “are we celebrating anything tonight”, no “have you dined with us before”… just “what can I get you to drink?” My husband ordered a coke and I ordered a glass of Moscato (there are 2 on the wine list). She returned a few minutes later and said that they didn’t have that kind. I looked at the list again and asked for a Riesling. She looked at me strange and then left. She returned about 10 min later and set down a glass containing a pink-hued wine (Riesling is never pink). Not wanting to cause a issue, I thanked her and drank what tasted to be a White Zinfandel. Maybe I look basic? Anyways. She then asked us if we were ready to order and said “do you want an appetizer?” We said no just dinner. I ordered the Sea Wars and my husband ordered the steak and ribs. The “have you dined with us before” question is important here. We had never been to Black Rock before this evening. I heard about the hot bald rock thing but assumed it was similar to Ruth Chris and their 700° plate for serving. Boy, we were wrong. But this was not explained at all. About 25 min after ordering a cart rolled up with 2 Sea Wars on it. The food runner tried to serve those dinners to us but we protested as it was not what we ordered. So the runner took the cart away. 5 min later our server rolls the very same cart back to the table and tries to serve us the plates again. Still not what we ordered. We told her and she looked at us with a blank stare. I said he had the steak and ribs. He doesn’t eat seafood so he can’t eat that and didn’t order that. She calls over another server and says rather loudly “I messed up.” Character limit prevents the rest of this tale.
Waitress was GREAT food was OK not great very pricey for what you got
It was very cold in the restaurant. Most people had sweaters and jackets on for a summer evening. Our waitress was a bit flaky. She could’ve been more personable. The whole thing about cooking your dinner on a flat rock was not completely comfortable. I didn’t like that this tray of black rock was slapped on the table taking up room that we needed for plates. Smoke from the sizzling Andre kept blowing into my eyes. There was no room on the table to move this tray so that didn’t happen without having to move everything on the table. We never did get a second dinner plate from our waitress. Maybe we were supposed to eat off the rock. The steaks were not seasoned except for a bit of rock salt on the rock. The calamari was delicious, the clam chowder was very good although it was an unusual recipe i.e. thin and not at all like I have experienced for clam chowder. The steak was tender but again needed seasoning in my opinion. The restaurant was out of baked potatoes at 6 PM. Early to be out of baked potatoes. One entrée with the sides and an appetizer was plenty for two people. We even took home a third of our steak and small amounts of the sides.
August 27th is my wife’s birthday and our wedding day. I’ve never had a reservation and not got seated within 5 mins of it. Reservation was for 745 we didn’t eat up 9 very disappointed in this experience
Food and service was ok, nothing to brag about. Why this place lost two stars was 1) it was so HOT in there, I was sweating and the waiter couldn’t bring cold drinks fast enough, and 2) I couldn’t walk in heels in there. The floor was so slippery in heels that the hostess actually told me to hang on to my husband because I would slip. On the way out I just ice skated my way out while hanging on to my husband. Lawsuit waiting to happen. Will not go back.
Food was terrible!! I paid for everything that I ordered and only ate the mashed potatoes and pretzels from the appetizer. I don't know who is in the kitchen, but the presentation, the lack of listening to customer requests show the lack of care and concern. I will not be returning.

We eat out a LT. And we all agreed that the the food was just ok. It was not a $200 meal. The service was great, the meal was just ok.

Food was good. I enjoy when we have been somewhere before and food is just as good as we remember. But the service was just ok. You really need to rethink taking online reservations. If wait times are already long in the restaurant you should not be adding virtual ones with wait times still over an hour. Adopt a reservation system, or walk-ins only. With our server, We asked for things that never came, had to ask for drink refills, and the server dropped the bill without asking about dessert, which we already planned on getting. A bit irritating when you have to ask for simple things that should be offered. Also, we had our credit card on the table with the bill for a while and she never came back. Thankfully we had enough cash between us to just leave it on the table for whenever she came to pick it up.
The mangers was really nice. The food was super fresh our Server she wasn’t the best but with the hospitality call the management it was still all worth it
The steak/shrimp deal going on right now is definitely worth the money!
Fries & sweet potato fries were great. Baked potato could have baked a bit more. Meat did not taste like a filet. I was disappointed because it was always good in the past
The three of us enjoyed our evening. Server was great, attentive, friendly. Food was perfectly prepared (salmon and shrimp ). Loved the steaks.
As long as you are okay with “cooking” our own steaks, great place to go. Was the best filet I’ve ever cooked 😂 would recommend.

The overall dining experience was great, however Priority Seating left much to be desired. We were told with Priority Seating that it would be a 45 minute to an hour wait for our table. There’s no point in reserving Priority Seating if we still have to wait a long time to get our table.
We both agreed that we had a very nice time. Our waitress was so nice and attentive that I gave her a 35% tip
Visited black rock a few hours ago for my step sons 15th birthday, food was amazing, our server was very nice and attentive, stated he had only been on the job for 2 weeks we definitely couldn’t tell he was very attentive & quick. Will definitely return
Love the food. Waitress was very nice. Floor was wet, ceiling was leaking, but someone was usually on it. Need more gluten free options.
Per the host, “Priority seating cuts wait time in half”, so we waited a full hour from the time our priority seating was booked. Pretty irritating.
Last minute date night out and we were able to find a sitter in time. With a 2 year old and a 5 year old it’s not often that we actually take time ourselves for a night out. Due to COVID restrictions it was hard to get a table anywhere last minute but luckily Black Rock was able to get us a table with an easy 30 minute wait. Once we were able to get a table it all went downhill. After telling the waitress it was our first time there she tried to explain the menu but seemed to know nothing about what was actually on the menu as she read it right in front of us to try to make sense of it. The prices for the food were 4 star steakhouse prices at half the quality. Appetizer was dropped off by our waitress without plates. After going 10 minutes without a drink refill we had to flag the waitress down and she confirmed she was on her way with the refill…. Unfortunately we had to remind her again after another 10 minutes that we were still waiting for a refill.
Upon completion of our meal we were never asked if we wanted desert….. she came over took our plates and said “do you want the check now?” To which we replied “yes” because this date night dinner experience was horrible.
Went for my boyfriends birthday, didn’t end up staying long enough to try our food. Our server didn’t know up from down. It was my boyfriends second time at Black Rock and he said the first server he had was amazing, really explained the menu to to the point where he felt confident about cooking his steaks. Unfortunately, our server did not. She didn’t go into the detail, didn’t know what types of soups they had. We ordered pretzel bites and she brought the cheese dip cold, when it’s definitely supposed to be warm. Overall very disappointed. Black Rock overall seems to be a great restaurant, but at this point I don’t believe they are hiring people with true server experience. If we go back and get seated in her section, we will be leaving again or asking for another server.
The wait time was an hour, but with priority seating the time was cut in half. Tables were socially distanced and the server was attentive. Overall satisfied!

We were seated promptly. Absolutely loved our waiter, Zachary: very attentive without hovering. Our steaks were outstanding & the sweet potato fries with caramel sauce were to die for. Great experience.

When entering the restaurant me and my friend me were expecting a wait time of 20 minutes they increased our wait time by 30 more minutes then it take 45 minutes to get an appetizer, entree, and dessert each the waitress was not helpful nor did she check on us periodically the food servings were very small the store owner had to intervene to fix things with our stay but overall worst restaurant I have ever been to sorry not sorry worst experience

Outside of that, the food was just ok and left smelling like smoke. Even with priority seating, still had a 1hr wait.
