Casa Oaxaca El Restaurante
Food is always very good but this Sunday it was excellent . In particular the fish in the black bean sauce with red wine was outstanding. Most servers were new and need a little bit of polish, but service overall was attentive and well supervised.
Perfect.... duck ufff
We saved this restaurant for our last night in Oaxaca expecting it to live up to past reviews.
What a mistake!
I ordered the Braised Short Ribs which are usually fall off the bone tender as they are supposed to be cooked all day to melt the fat off. These weren’t. There was a lot of fat, so much that I couldn’t eat it.
I sent it back and ordered the sea bass, another mistake.
The first few bites were fine but as I got closer to the middle the fish was cold.
I only ate about a third of the fish but that was enough to get me sick.
I left the restaurant hungry.
Our flight was early the next morning and flying home was hell.
It’s 2 days later and I still need to be in close proximity to a bathroom.
The service was average, the staff seemed rushed and overworked which is not what I expect from fine dining.
It might have just been an off night for the chef but I could never recommend this restaurant.
Napoleón was the highlight of the night. Culture and class are disappearing, but this master of ceremonies on guitar exudes class and sophistication. Napoleón caps a great evening of good food, attentiveness by the wait staff and an experience that will long be remembered. To support the cause I felt compelled to ask Napoleón to stay and play. He’s a class act and Casa Oaxaca would be much less without him! Oh, I had the corn soup and short rib. A bottle of red and an American coffee to relax with. Oaxaca has great food. Casa Oaxaca rises to the occasion. GoyoGTO recommends highly!!
These people don’t care about customers. First no reservation oh now we find it for table in the service area oh then find the one we reserved. Did not have the champagne we ordered to bring one at 2x the price. Then spill boiling soup on my wife’s lap. Offered to pay cleaning and medical only after confronting them . We will never go back. Told our hotel (who made the reservation) that we hope they would never send customers again.
Bottom line: go to this restaurant at your own risk. Too many other good restaurants in Oaxaca that you can pass this one by.
Superb restaurant in a great set up. Beautiful Atmosphere . Food is delicious and very fresh and fragrant. I had one of the very best salads ever. Because it is such a simple dish, this is why it was so exceptionally good.
This is a place not to be missed if you are in the area.
Everyone seems to rave about this place. Admittedly, the location is great, the rooftop dining can be nice, the food itself is good, and the waiters are hard-working although not always attentive. The problem is the the people they pick as hostesses are TERRIBLE. They adopt an adversarial approach to guests. They ignore requests for seating locations and act totally put out by such requests. Furthermore they don’t speak a word of English even though English is the international language of most of their guests. This place is overrated and they have become smug and complacent. We have been to Oaxaca before and will return again, but we will NEVER come back to Casa Oaxaca. There are other restaurants with better food, great locations, and much better service.
This pains me to write
Here’s my complaint and it has nothing to do with the food or drinks
We sat downstairs and I was facing the stairs
The way the kitchen is set up - waiters must RUN up and down the stairs all night to bring you your food - everything is brought up/down the stairs (food, plates, glasses)
While this is happening, guests are going up and down or queuing to go up/down - it’s a circus
It does not allow for a relaxed atmosphere- I was hyperventilating watching all the action
The waiters are tasked with making table side salsa - a fabulous salsa - but another unnecessary time consuming job for them
The pacing is all off
They’re making salsa, running up and down the stairs, clearing bus tables, and trying to find the credit card machines
Please hire an additional server who’s only job it is is to make the salsa - it’ll be more relaxed, that person will be able to explain the chili’s, etc
Our waiter had no time to breathe much less talk
Perhaps that new addition could then be responsible for bringing the checks
I can not fault you in your food, drinks, decor - but slow it down - let us savor your special place. I commuted one and out of NYC’s Grand Central Station for 30 years - this felt like that same frenetic energy
Best of luck
As a party of 4, we ate on the rooftop. The ambience was excellent and our service was top notch. The food was delicious. An unforgettable experience.
Excelente comida y servicio
Casa Oaxaca was recommended to us. It was a fantastic dinner. Starting with the table side salsa. Everything was so good, drinks, dinner and dessert. Highly recommend
We made reservations 2 weeks in advance and specifically asked for the upper terrace. When we got there they seated us on a lower terrace (we are 2 women) while male walk ins got upper terrace tables. We complained and got moved to the upper terrace. Also we went there because the view of the illuminated Santa Domingo church (from the upper terrace) is breathtaking. Guess what? The church is no longer illuminated at night so no view. Service was perfunctory (I owned a restaurant in San Francisco so I can comment on service or lack thereof) and the food was meh. So sad. I loved it in 2014.
Great place , the food amazing , the guacamole at the begining is great , mole was excelent.
Bad experience overall. Two years ago they were great. Now they live off their old reputation. Not enough wait staff and they are impatient. No drink orders, and once we made an order my wine came after I was done with main course. Food was not creative anymore. Seems like a restaurant that is too busy and they are going through the motions. And finally, I got sick after the meal. I suspect the octopus which I did not finish. What a disappointment.
I highly recommend this place. sharing dishes is how we went and it was all great. serously. the servers are just ok but the drinks also great. very worth it.
This was our second time at Case Oaxaca (the first for our guests), and we thought the food was even better than it had been two years ago. The chef creates very interesting, innovative, gourmet takes on traditional Oaxacan cuisine. The menu has a good variety, including vegetarian dishes. Each dish is well prepared and beautifully presented. The portions of the entries were hearty, especially for a gourmet restaurant. My wife and sister-in-law were not able to finish their main dish. The restaurant is well located near Santo Domingo and has nice views of the church/convent. Definitely one of the best places to eat in Oaxaca that we've found.
The meal was delicious. I would give the service 5 stars, but we clearly stated a peanut allergy and were not informed when one of the dishes had peanuts in it-- we found that out for ourselves which could have ended pretty badly. The food was excellent and the outdoor seating was beautiful.
poor service, lackluster food is an affront to the Oaxacan reputation for excellent food and friendly service. Better food and service is available in restaurants costing a fraction of the price. A huge disappointment. To be avoided.
Wonderful place! A must for any trip to Oaxaca. Great food and great service
Casa Oaxaca is fantastic from food, to ambiance, to service and price. I recommend sitting on the rooftop dining area. Our visit was made even more special by the roaming guitar player, Napoleon, who played a romantic Mexican ballad for me and my wife. He is a gem and should always be around to serenade the guests. Do not miss!
Loved this place. The food is delicious, the view is exquisite and we especially liked Napoleon, the violinist, whose divine music adds a touch of class. We would come back just because of him.
The rooftop terrace was a beautiful space to dine at the restaurant. The servers were professional and attentive, without being overbearing. They had a good number of vegetarian options. The plantain appetizer and the potato patty entree I ordered were very good as was the pineapple mezcal cocktail I ordered.
We always make a point of eating at all kinds of restaurants when we travel and always include one or two top tier choices. Although this is a lovely restaurant and ostensibly one of the best in Oaxaca, we were somewhat disappointed. We called ahead to confirm a terrace table and when we arrived, the hostess, who did not provide a particularly warm welcome, gave us an argument, trying to put us in the downstairs dining room (which was as empty of life as a tomb). The food was good but not outstanding. Casa Oaxaca is fine if you want a more elegant setting, but frankly, we had more fun, better food and certainly better value from the street vendors and the less touted local restaurants.
The food and ambience were delightful from start to finish. The food is prepared in a light manner respectful of the excellent ingredients and presented beautifully. The staff are available and courteous although there was no clearly assigned waiter so it lacked a degree of personal attention. We went twice last week because it was the best we found in Oaxaca.
Gorgeous restaurant with inspired food. I had a vegetable lasagna that was beautifully presented and delicious. My husband has the turkey with mole and said it was the best mole he has
Tasted. Service was friendly and very attentive. There are several floors to the restaurant, we chose to eat on the rooftop terrace and it was lovely.
The patio is a beautiful space. An ethereal experience
