Catalan Mediterranean Cuisine
Service was outstanding. Promptly seated upon arrival in the interior courtyard; due to COVID19, the is no dine-in option/seating inside the other areas of the restaurant. Quite alright though as the interior courtyard is much nicer than these makeshift popups that other restaurants are resorting to in parking lots where you have to deal with a lot of noise, traffic, pollution, etc.
Food was excellent. Ordered the paella mixta (rice was cooked perfectly with some toothiness) while the shrimp, mussels and squid were spot on and NOT rubbery, with the mild chorizo and chicken being super moist and delicious. The bone marrow starter is quite generous and the grilled bread is nicely charred -- usually dislike orange marmalade but it was the perfect accompaniment to the savory/richness of the bone marrow. The other starter was the tapas plate and the sweetness of the cream cheese piquillo peppers was refreshing, the garlic shrimp was just meh, but the chorizo was the star of this plate as it was cooked with a nice charred crispiness with a grainy brown mustard that had sweetness from what I'm assuming is bananas/plantains that were cooked and mixed with the mustard. Paired nicely against the saltiness of the chorizo. The beef cheek and pasta was a 4-star out of 5 star dish; the one star knockdown was simply due to the dish being way too rich and savory! It needed some quick pickled red onions or something else that had some acidity to cut the fattiness of the dish.
Make sure to get both the buenelos and churros for dessert! You won't regret it.
Food was delicious and service was good. Will return. Definitely return when happy hour is back.
Fantastic. The food was amazing, service was prompt & professional. This gem off the main “town” area is a restaurant we will frequent when visiting the valley!
Their signature dish, paella, was very good. The outside dining is not really outside but their is a flexible roof cover which allows air to flow and circulate, and the tables are physically separated adequately. All staff were observed wearing face coverings.
We love Catalan and go fairly often and recommend it to friends.
Hosted a party of 4 on their patio. Service was excellent, food is spectacular - great atmosphere, easy to converse and the food really is great! I'm particularly fond of their octopus, their paella and their chocolate-filled churros - standards for me every time I dine at Catalan.
Menu description not clear, needed repeated request for basics
I hosted the party of 6, I ordered the prime rib special and it was anything but special! At $48.00 I expected a properly roared cut of prime rib, what I was served was a raw piece of meat that had never known a roasting pan, it was cut from the prime rib raw, lightly warmed on a grill or pan and had no seasoning too speak of. Even using a steak knife I wasn’t able to cut it, I sent it back to be cooked and after I was re-served it wasn’t curable, I was able to cut the outer rim of meat, hardly enough for a meal . When the server came to ask how it was I told her it wasn’t edible at that point the other guests were finished eating. At that point she asked if I wanted to order something else, of course that was not possible as everyone had already finished eating. I am an excellent cook, my daughter is a culinary institute graduate who ran her catering business for 17 yrs, we both were speechless! The item was taken off the bill, but it didn’t fill my stomach I left hungry and very disappointed.
Another thing that we all found incredible was calling the indoor, covered area a patio. It’s not a patio, it’s walled in and covered and shouldn’t be used during the pandemic.
I went for the paella and loved everything. Service was great. The garlic pesto with the excellent bread was outstanding! We could have had that alone fir dinner. The tapas plate was the appetizer. In that the sautéed shrimp alone would have memorable. The red peppers stuffed with goat cheese was a very pleasant surprise. And then there was the chorizo with a mustard sauce. I could have that morning, noon, and night! Absolutely, amazing. The paella did not disappoint at all. Calamari, fish, chicken, mussels, and more chorizo. It was incredible.
I’ll be back!
One of my favorite desert restaurants. I dine here every 1-2 weeks. Food and service are consistently excellent.
The menu offers unique choices which I find refreshing when dining out. Service was excellent.
Great food, service, wine recommendation, nice indoor/outdoor patio. Can't wait to go again
Absolutely a perfect dining experience. We loved the covered outdoor patio area, service was spot on, and the food was delicious. I had the scallops and they were perfectly cooked, not rubbery, with great flavors. My friends had fish and loved both dishes. We shared the appetizer sampler, and also tried several different cocktails, and all were excellent. Thanks for a great evening!
Birthday but the restaurant was overbooked and made no notice of the birthday despite being told 3 times. Kitchen was very slow getting food out
Burrata and beet salad was great. A nice sweet appetizer that had a really nice combination of textures with the crunchy nuts, creamy burrata, and acidic fresh beets.
We ordered scallops and paella as mains. Scallops initially came out undercooked, which they took back to reheat with no issue. They ended up being delicious. I am not a fan of paella, but the seafood in the dish was all fresh and flavorful.
The highlight for me was the sangria! We got a pitcher, which was well worth. It has brandy mixed in for that extra kick, but did not taste strongly at all.
While vacationing in Palm Desert my wife and I had dinner twice at Catalan. We went two Wednesday nights when they offer half price for bottles of wine. They don't offer the two course special from 5 to 6 pm that they advertise on the web page (which needs an update).
Food, wine, service were all good.
We are sure that we will return during our next visit to Palm Desert.
Dining was only allowed in the courtyard which has decent ventilation. Wait staff were wearing face masks (although the waitress we had during our first visit had her nose barely covered). Most guests wore face masks although one person entered the restaurant without a face mask and my wife asked him to wear a face mask (he went back to his car and got it), another person went to the rest room without a face mask. It is disappointing that the people working at Catalan did not say anything.
During out first visit some guests hugged the waiter. UNBELIEVABLE.
This was our first time visiting Catalan. It has been on our list to try for some time and we finally made it happen. Really enjoyed the smoked fish dip with pita bread. Chickens livers were good. Short ribs were tender, flavorful, and came with some nice pureed cauliflower. I enjoyed the Sangria for a change, while my hubby had his usual cocktail. The bartender was very helpful and entertaining. Otherwise the service was not memorable. Nice that the have the courtyard for out door dining. We will definitely be back.
Service was definitely off. Dishes piles up. No attention.
Definitely didn’t realize the serious lack of vegetarian options until my out of town dinner guests noticeably pointed it that the dishes used many words that don’t describe ingredients appropriately.
We usually go once a week- that is changing, we won’t be back for quite awhile...
This place today rocks. The food was great, I was so stuffed had some left overs to take home. I would recommend to friends and family for sure. The place is not too large but allows enough space for groups also. I would for sure say go and try it, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you for great service.
The food was exceptional!
Great food, great experience
Limited menu. Short on servers so things took a while.
Good to see that our old favorite continues to be great, similar menu but food was better than ever.
This restaurant is a gem in the desert. The paella and steak dishes were superb plus the service was gold star! We were really impressed by the quality of cuisine and the prices were fantastic!
We were traveling. Picked based on Yelp ratings. The grilled octopus, beets and Burrata salad and paella were outstanding! We also had the banana and cream cheese buñelos, which were delicious. We would definitely return.
Still our favorite restaurant in the desert. Only the center courtyard was open during Covid but it is always nice there. But food was excellent as usual and you can’t beat 50% off bottle wine on Wednesdays. See you next time!
Amazing food, wonderful service! We shall return again soon!
We had the paella special which was a pan of paella and a pitcher of sangria. Quite tasty and more than enough that we got to take some home. Note that the "outside" is really a courtyard that has a cloth covering over it so that it's essentially inside.
All OK, but food was very bland. Had salmon and whitefish.
I thought the wait staff was very accommodating, I had a lot of picky people in my party. The food was excellent, the Malbec went perfectly with appetizers and my lamb! You must try the Octopus/Shrimp with Chorizo was excellent! The lamb was so delicious. I will definitely be back when I come back to town! Cheers, Catalan!!
We went with our kids, 7 & 12, and we had a wonderful time. Food is amazing. I would highly recommend.
We enjoyed our time in the patio of the restaurant. However, it was difficult to find the entrance as it was not well lit. We enjoyed the wine list ... great choices. The food good, but I’m not sure I’d call it fabulous.
Food and service were really good. We were a bit disappointed that they were out of Sangria.
I love Catalan and have been coming for dinner once a week. Thank you for outstanding food and service!
What an amazing find! The food was incredible and so was the service. I would definitely recommend the octopus & the short ribs!
Let's start with the good first. The half chicken and paella were fabulous. Now for the bad. The service was not the best. No one came to greet us at the host stand for 10 mins and couldn't find our reservation even though I booked it through Yelp, and no one came to our table for about 20 mins after being seated. It took forever for them to bring things that were asked for like silverware, extra condiments, etc... however they were quick to bring the check LOL! The pitcher of Sangria was weak and completely watered down. When I brought it up to one of the wait staff he basically just told us the ingredients in it and walked away. Also the salads were bland, lacked flavor. I might give them another chance in the near future. Hopefully they'll read this and get it together.
We saw Catalan driving along Hwy 111 and looked it up on Yelp. The reviews were great so we decided to try it. WOW! What a pleasant surprise. We were seated in an atrium area with great ventilation, trees, plants and a sense of calm. Tables were appropriately separated for COVID, and we felt comfortable. The house bread and dipping sauce is "to DIE for!" Really, we asked for more. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was spot on, not too sweet. For our dinner, we started with the Anchovy salad, their version of a Caesar, it was much better than a Caesar, delicious, not too much dressing. We followed that with the Mussels which were delicious, and then we had the Paella. Paella was cooked perfectly, rice al dente, seafood tender, perfect amount of spice. We ended out meal with the Catalan Custard. Oh, MY! Do not leave without trying the custard! It was unlike any custard we have had before, different, delicious spices and flavors.
We highly recommend Catalan if you are looking for something different and delicious! Please help them stay open during this unprecedented time.
Best Tapas place:) Whenever we go to the desert we book this place.
Catalan continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in the valley. There atmosphere is excellent - sitting on the patio makes me feel like I'm in southern Spain - and their food is always well-prepared and very tasty. I love their house-cured olives and their signature paella.
For desert I'm now hooked on their chocolate filled churros - the combination of semi-sweet chocolate and the cinnamon/sugar coating achieves a perfect balance. Consistenly good food and service in an elegant atmosphere.
Service excellent. Food great sSunday special outstanding
