This is not our first time dining at Catania, since we are locals - we live just down the road. Love the food, ambiance is ok. I was actually really disappointed that there was absolutely no effort made to recognize Fathers Day. Nothing. Give the man a free shot or dessert. Make him feel special. It could have been any other night of the week. My husband is a “foodie” and that’s why we came here for Father’s Day, but I cannot say it was special. Will still return, but not for a special occasion. Sadly disappointed.
We have been to Catania 4 times now and consider it to be one of the top 3 restaurants in La Jolla. There is a beautiful outdoor patio with a partial view of ocean and sunset, but thats not even why we go. The food is fresh, innovative, and outstanding. We have eaten top notch seafood, pasta, and pizza. Everything was delicious. Its a casual place which makes it even better. The inside is beautiful too so you can't go wrong.
Really good food. Service was great. Enjoyable dining experience.
I ordered a shrimp risotto which was very salty, presentation very mediocre and portion of risotto very small, probably there were 8 spoons full of risotto and for the price that I paid was not worth it and very ridiculous.
Food is amazing
This is one of our favorite restaurants in the US! We visit everytime we are in the area.
Bridgitte and the hostesses are all amazing. Friendly, accommodating, fun.
If it wasn't so pricey I'd come regularly!
Catania is reliably wonderful, the food, cocktails, and service are fantastic as is the killer view. One of our favorite local spots!
First time there and I had the squid ink pasta and oh my goodness! I didn’t want to eat it all , only because I wanted to save some for later but it was too good to save for later!
Very accommodating to reservation request. Delicious food. Loved the Artichoke Ravioli en Brodo.
My friend and I had a delightful dining experience. Thank you!
Really enjoyed our meal here. We shared a couple appetizers and entrees. The pizza was very tasty, as was the ahi tuna, cauliflower and risotto. The restaurant is in a little mall on the 3rd floor. We ended sitting by the entrance so we felt a little chilly at first. Once the wind died down it was fine. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re in La Jolla.
Fantastic outdoor view of La Jolla and the ocean. Exquisite food and wine offerings. A real gem for Italian foodies.
best italien restaurant in San Diego!!! The Chef is the AMAZING
Menu gave us so many choices, we really could not decide. Two of us had pasta, one had a pizza and I had a salad. Views were amazing, ambiance was wonderful, wait staff were a delight. Can’t wait to go back.
The food, service and atmosphere has been wonderful each and every time we have gone to Catania. Great for a casual dinner for 2 or a celebration.
Waiter (Brazilian Japanese) was amazing. His service was exceptional and his knowledge of the cuisine was second to none!
I usually never leave reviews but felt the need to do so in this case. We went for Mother’s day and we were seated on the patio, which had a nice view and was warm. The hostesses who greeted and seated us were so sweet, hospitable and welcoming!
Service was fine, but the food was horrible and expensive! The cauliflower appetizer was good, but as for the entrees. 1st, the menu selection was very limited. Of the selections, the only thing my brother and I wanted was the seared tuna and they were out of it. So we settled on another fish they had, the "ROASTED BRANZINO". We asked the waitress if the portion was sufficient to share since it was $38.00 and she said yes. When she brought the dish out, I seriously thought it was a joke! I was expecting a relatively normal fish plate, fillet with sauce and the like; however, she brought out a literally whole small sized "roasted fish" lying on its side, including head, eyes, tail and all! There were a few small clams surrounding it. No Salad and just a few stalks of broccolini. When I saw it, I lost all my appetite and told my brother to eat the whole thing (which was not all that much)! My mom ordered the GRILLED SHRIMP AND CALAMARI. The shrimp looked fine, but the calamari was to me very unappealing. Several long "tubes" of squid, along with pieces of the tentacles, on a small bed of what looked like little pearl pasta, with a few olives. This dish was $17.00 - Neither of these dishes included soup, or salad which would have been an additional $14.00.
What was more surprising is that the prices were just for the Lunch menu - the dinner menu was considerably more. I don’t mind paying for a good meal with decent portions, but to me this did not qualify. I did not end up ordering anything and left hungry.
All in all, I feel like we mostly paid to have the nice view in the heart of La Jolla Cove.. The shops around it and the beach being close by compensated for the lunch. Obviously just my opinion
Came here for Mother’s Day lunch and everything was fantastic. To be honest, I was not expecting the food to be as good as it was! Food was amazing and so was the service! Will definitely be back.
Staying in LaJolla for a few days. Catania was outstanding. Great cocktails. Wait staff are very personable. Shared the flat bread, which was excellent, along with individual salads. Versatile wine list.
Adorable restaurant with a great view. Food was incredible, as well as the service. Will definitely come back often!
Excellent experience overall. I recommend this place
Dined at Cantania last evening. Wonderful staff, food is outstanding, OWNERSHIP is deceitful and crooked.
I'm sure you've had an experience where you just felt RIPPED OFF and the whole thing was ruined. If you're not careful that will happen to you at Cantania.
With my meal I ordered a half-bottle of Patz&Hall Chardonnay, without looking at the price. This is a 2015 Chardonnay that has an average price of around $31 a bottle. Upon getting my bill I see that I was charged $60 for a half bottle!!!!! $30 per glass for an average California chardonnay!!! Quadruple markup!!!
If you read other reviews you will see they also charge a "surcharge" for your meal. You can see the opinions of other reviewers on this, I have the same. If ownership charges a surcharge and quadruples the cost of wine then you know they are trying to bilk you. I would not recommend going there, business people with that type of greed should not be rewarded.
Its really a shame, they put out a fabulous meal and dont need to behave like this, but I guess some people are just plain greedy at the core.
Wonderful place, wonderful service, wonderful food. The patio at the back has a south of france feeling where you dine under trees.
This is our favorite restaurant in San Diego! Amazing food, great location, outstanding staff!
Great space, great service and good wine. Don’t miss the dessert menu. The Nutella dessert is to die for!
Everything was lovely, however I'd like to see some bigger Italian wines for a better price. I am a big fan of drinking Barolo and the only one they had was $20/glass. With that said, I still ordered it :)
Service and food was fantastic.
The cheese plate included a single cheese (cold meat plate included more).
main dishes were okay.
service was excellent.
We had a four day stay in La Jolla and visited Catania twice it was so nice. Our server Kristi was awesome and very personable. The food is delicious, and everyone in our party loved their food. We had the duck sausage pasta, tagliatelle, black ink spaghetti, and whole branzino. The desserts, huckleberry pannacotta and nutella mousse were also to die for. Highly recommend for a nice Italian meal.
Great food. The place I enjoyed sitting was outside overlooking LaJolla streets. The other seating was too squishy and too far away from my dinner companion.
Amazing food! Amazing service!
The food is incredible and really speaks for itself but the service was top notch. Really made my wife and I feel special. Can’t wait to go back
We had a great Easter dinner! We love the ambience, service and food. We are never disappointed.
We planned Easter lunch, it was our first visit and we most likely will not return. Food was ok, I had a steak salad that was 18.00 and was very small portion. Very eclectic menu was not for our taste.
I am a vegan and they made a vegan plate that was delicious, just for me!
Excellent as always
My dinner was delicious. Very nice serving staff. Lovely experience. Wish we could have had a better view.
Our table inside the patio was a little difficult to see the ocean view. Overall very nice!
Loved our experience at Catania. Outside seating is heated and has a view of the ocean and La Jolla. Food was fantastic--we especially enjoyed the crispy octopus and the roasted cauliflower. Ambience was casual and relaxed. Will definitely be coming back.
Great view... One of my fave spots for Happy Hour and sunsets... Better food than places on the water and a nice view.
My friend and I dined outside on the veranda. It was a beautiful day. Lunch was DELISH. We especially enjoyed the citrus salad. Out server was outstanding. I appreciate that she offered me a 1/2 glass of sparkling rose. I wanted to join my friend in her birthday toast but had planned an athletic pursuit after lunch and didn't really care to drink much booze before it. We were treated to a delicious birthday panna cotta as well. The server read our needs beautifully.
