We are the one and only modern Chinese cuisine and gastropub in Los Angeles. We have a team of highly experienced chefs recuited from prestigious Chinese restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai and Yangzhou. Chang'an specializes in Chinese BBQ grills (skewers), steaks and Seafood Dishes. We have carefully selected delicious dishes from different areas in China, and have prepared worldwide selections of beers, wines, spirits. We also have premium sakes and cocktails drinks.
Chang'an has the only roof top patio in San Gabriel Valley that over looks at the Monterey Park Hills. It offers a romantic / candle light dinner setting in a modern, industrial style space. The patio is perfect for a summer night date with dim string lights and ambiance music.

It took me 45 minutes to put in my order. It took another extra hour for my dessert to come out. It also took another 30 minutes to get my check. And I thought that because I went there solo, it would be better. However, a 45 min meal ended up being over 2 hours. Food was alright, and ambience was fine.

The service was bad for a nicer restaurant. We had an early reservation and the restaurant was probably half empty. There were open booths and we asked to be seated at one of them, but the hostess said they were unavailable - I thought maybe they needed the booth for a larger party but they later sat 2 people in one and parties of 4 (same sized) in the other booths. Our waitress took our order then never checked in on us on her own. We were there for dineLA and so we thought then food would come out in courses. They brought out the chicken wings (which were actually good), the tofu skin, and the skewers at basically the same time. We got a short rib skewer and three filet mignon skewers. Both were seasoned the same way and delicious, though i liked the short rib better. Three of the entrees (waygu and asparagus) came out a few minutes later (really poor timing because we had barely started on the appetizer and the table was a bit small for all the dishes.) I don't recommend the waygu and asparagus- waygu made it sound fancy but it is basically little cubes of beef sauteed with asparagus- neither impressive in presentation or taste. I sampled some of the waygu and asparagus while waiting for the rice to come and it was lukewarm. After a few minutes of waiting for rice, we asked a server for it. Waited a bit more and still no rice, so I asked the buser/water guy and he brought out the bowls of rice for us. I had also asked for chili paste earlier and the waitress hadn't brought it so I flagged her down again. We didn't get the 4th entre (short ribs) until 40/45 minutes after the first 3 were served. I had asked two separate people to check on them... each said they would be coming out soon and that they take a little longer - funny enough other tables who arrived after us received their short ribs at about the same time as me. To be fair the short ribs were good and the presentation was akin to fine dining. Overall... not worth the $40 per person for dine LA.

Our party tried various items off the DineLA lunch menu and enjoyed just about everything we tried. Appetizers Garlic chicken wings were tasty and shareable Oyster and scallop were beautiful dishes but def meant for 2 person Main courses/Skewers We enjoyed the pork belly, sweet and sour shrimp, filet mignon The white and brown rice both took some time to come out with our dish and when it finally did, it tasted slightly under-done, which was disappointing. I ended up not eating any rice because it came after my appetizer and main and skewer. Ambience Lively environment with a crowd, it almost echoes. The decor was nice and invites conversation. Overall, aside from the disorganization, it was a positive experience.

The service was friendly and attentive! They came by to refill our water without asking and were helpful with our questions about the menu. They have a great Happy Hour menu! The garlic chicken wings and the steamed scallops were delicious! Nice atmosphere for family dinner, girls night out, date or special occasions. Free parking available in the underground parking structure. From the elevator, take it to the third floor, where the restaurant is located.

Very slow and inexperienced wait staff. The best items on the menu in my view are the scallops, the chicken soup and the lobster. It is not worth the drive from West LA to San Gabriel.
