Sep 15〜Oct 17, 2021Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month at Chao Pescao! We have curated a delectable five-course dinner featuring the distinct Latin flavors of Cuba & Colombia. With the ultimate foundation of our Colombian white rice and Cuban black beans, we've built a menu that'll take you on a culinary adventure through the delicious native dishes of these colorful countries. The special menu includes three delicious starters (Mariquitas, Pan de Bono, Empanadas), with a selection of options for your Main (Bistec de Palomilla or Lechon Cubano) and dessert (Tembleque or Tarta de Alfajor). Really get in the spirit by adding on one of our rum or mezcal tastings as well!
Tajin Fried Chicken
Three-pieces free range local poultry, Mexican spices, lime, hot sauce - served with black beans, rice & choice of crispy or sweet plantains
Crispy cassava fries, chipotle aioli, garlic mojo
Roasted pork, ham, gruyere, pickle, dijon mustard, Cuban bread - served with papas fritas
I was for the most part disappointed. The cubano sandwich was super dry and the fries came cold. The sandwich was super hot, like burn yourself hot, but the fries were cold as if they were sitting out for 1hr +. I guess I expected too much when I saw the ratings. I will say, the ambience was pretty cool and the interior design is awesome. Food, not so much.
Delicious food and great cocktails. Gluten-free friendly. Hard to find Latin Caribbean food in SF like this
Super fun decor! Amazing food and super friendly service!
Great food, ambiance and service!
Pretty poor overall. Terrible service. Food is no better than from a food truck.
Delicious food, loved the special Hamilton themed menu for theatergoers! Excited to come back.
Highly recommend - Tajin fried chicken, bistek, alfajores. Great stiff drinks!
The food was just a bit under seasoned but still delicious and worth checking out again! Service is great!
The restaurant staff was incredibly kind and aware of safety precautions. The food was delicious and our server made great suggestions. I will be dreaming about the zucca fritta! Yum!!
We had the three piece chicken dinner and the slow cooked pork shoulder dinner. Both were excellent. We'd highly recommend this restaurant. We had good service too.
It's a great location - just across the street from the Asian Art museum and two+ blocks from the Orpheum theater.
Excellent food snd service.!! Staff very friendly, efficient and accommodating about getting to theater on time.
Bummer that they don't serve "arroz con pollo", but everything we ate was delicious and plentiful! Definitely going back to help exploring the menu.
Very tasty food, very fun atmosphere Andy tasty cocktails.
Going to be honest here and admit we tried to book the Zuni Cafe as part of our visit to the Van Gogh immersive, but it was full and we 'settled' on Chao P because its menu look novel and promising. It was a delight from decor to cuisine. Good call!
Highlights: 1) Rose, our waitress, was bubbly and solicitous and ever so kind. When my wife asked for a 'girly' drink, bemoaning that no one makes a Grasshopper anymore, Rose asked the ingredients and said the bartender would give it a try. And out came a white grasshopper that tasted delicious. 2) The quinoa salad was - and I hate to exaggerate - among the very best we've ever had. 3) That aforementioned decor was charming - lively, fun, extremely creative, colorful, dramatic, a refreshing break from depressing fog gray. 4) Those tapioca buns that are apparently the signature of the house. Can't remember the name. I think a proper term for their mouth feel would unctuous. 5) And once more. It wasn't just Rose. Everyone made us feel welcome, which seems a silly thing to say because it's such a cliche, but for once it is a statement of simple accuracy. We will definitely make the long trek from Oakland again soon!
Had wonderful evening at Chao Pescao!
There were five of us and we were early, so it took a bit to seat us, but were seated and drink orders taken before our reservation time.
The empanadas were scrumptious as were the plantains.
The main corses were excellent as well, I had the Cubano sandwich and it was one of the best I've had.
I'll explain that I did mark a 4 on service, and that was with the understanding that they were really slammed that evening. Someone in a rush would have been more disappointed. Even with that the staff was engaged and as responsive as could be.
We look forward to a return visit.
This was my second time at Chao Pescao. Their food is truly excellent, an appealing mix of pan-Latin-American cuisine, with influences from Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Brasil, and more. We both got the quinoa and black bean salad with grilled chicken, and the veggie (and gluten free!) empanadas. Lots of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options, so a good pick for a group with mixed dietary restrictions. The service is also excellent. The previous restaurant in this space felt claustrophobic, despite the high ceilings. Chao Pescao’s redesign feels light and welcoming and even a bit artistic. We were there on Friday evening and one particular table was very loud, but that is to be expected.
A delicious Latino Caribbean restaurant. My dinner mate is Puerto Rican, and from the tostines to the Bistec with rice and black beans, it was all delicious. We were having such a good time that we almost lost track of time; we were set to see Hamilton at 7.
Bright and cheery atmosphere with delicious food to match.
During two visits so far, had the angus beef (bistec de palomilla) and pork shoulder (lechon cubano) specials, both of which were wonderfully seasoned and completely satisfying. We shared three of the empanadas, each of which were filled with tasty preparations of chicken, pork, or beef, served with a zesty tomato-based puréed salsa. Tried the warm tapioca rolls also, which had a thin, golden brown, crusty coating and the warm cheese inside. Subtly flavored so I’ll ask for some of the salsa to accompany them next time. The grilled romaine salad with garlic shrimp, pickled red onion, cotija, cuban bread croutons, cumin caesar dressing was another hit. For dessert, we had the coconut custard with Grand Marnier and cinnamon and the shortbread cookies with dark chocolate centers, coconut and lime zest - both a treat but the cookies are to die for!
I can’t wait to go back. It felt like we were on vacation in Cuba
Great food and great service!
Comfort food in a really nice location with an interesting decor. Enjoyed it!
Delicious , well presented food in a cheerful atmosphere.
Delicious and authentic food. Attentive and friendly service. Highly recommend.
What a great find. Chao has been open only a a couple of months, but they have created a terrific restaurant with delicious carribean food, a warm, bright, ambiance, with an upbeat staff. We wanted a place close to the Orpheum so decided to give it a try. The empanadas were flavorful and well prepared. The wine list more than met our expectations, and everyone in our party of 8 tried something different, and no one was disappointed. Generous portions and well priced.. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was our order got mixed up with another table so three meals had to be reprepared. (Thankfully this did not make us late for the show).
Hopefully more people will discover this little gem, we will definitely return.
Delicious drinks and food! Fun experience overall with bright and quirky ambiance. They (like so many restaurants these days) seemed to be understaffed. It took a really long time to get our drinks and food. They comped us an app because of it which was appreciated and our server was friendly… we were in a time crunch though to get to Hamilton. Come here when you aren’t in a hurry and want a new, cheerful dining experience.
We had a good experience at Chao Pescao. Our server was kind and very knowledgeable of the menu. We had the Hamilton Special. Friend mentioned that the food could have been seasoned a little more but was still good. I would come back to try other things in the menu.
Sunny and bright restaurants with good food and great service. Perfect for those visiting the Asian Art Museum or City Hall. Great bar as well with some fun drinks.
Fantastic food and wonderful atmosphere. Try everything! The Cuban sandwich and the chicken sandwich are everything.
Great food and great service!
This was our first time here--a special occasion. We tried four of the appetizers, and we loved them all, especially the empanadas. The next time we go, we may just do a full appetizer course and skip the mains. There are a few more we want to try!
For our mains, the fried chicken was excellent, as was the slow roasted pork shoulder. And I got to have cheesecake with monkfruit instead of sugar--a keto friendly dessert! Good value for the money; service was excellent with lots of tips and education from our server. Nice latin music playing the background. It would be great if the menu could include an explanation of the Columbian-Cuban fusion in the food and decor!
A great experience from start to finish. The staff are welcoming and attentive and the food is delicious! I have not had one thing I did not like!
Nice greeting and accommodation with a larger table when I asked. Server was excellent but whole process was slow. Prob understaffed. Food was great, with flavors and textures we loved. Presentation was also very nice. Music was nice but a bit loud—did not ask them to lower it so it was not extreme. Lighting was variable from table to table, so check if it natters to you😎.
We had Lechón Cubano and a romaine lettuce with grilled shrimps. Both dishes were great. Friendly and pleasant staff. We loved the decors, quite artistic. Will return.
It was hreat
Excelente sabor de comida latinoamericana auténtica profundo conocimiento del sentir música acorde al lugar espacioso múrales y decoración espectacular el sabor de el sancocho y de los tostones son auténticos éxitos y recomendado
The drinks, as well as the food, delicious!
Very cute place - awesome decor. We went for lunch on Friday and there weren’t a lot of people inside so it was quiet. The staff were great - friendly and helpful. The food was so good and also was prepared rather quickly so we didn’t have to wait long and enjoyed a filling, delicious meal! I will be back, and I highly recommend Chao Pescao to anyone visiting the area!
The gluten-free empanadas alone are worth going to Chao Pescao - DELICIOUS! The yuca frite were perfectly crispy and the pork in the Cochinita salad was tender and juicy. The Bistec de Palomilla, including meat, rice, beans and plantains was plentiful and tasty. We liked both of our drinks from the fun cocktail menu. Above all, the friendliness of everyone in the restaurant and especially our server made our dining experience perfect.
