Chou Chou Bistro
Red Beet & Arugula Salad
goat cheese, toasted almonds, currants, strawberry vinaigrette
Grass fed 8 oz. filet mignon, homemade potatoes, asparagus, squash & green pepper corn sauce
Wild salmon, asparagus, squash, sweet potato puree, lemon caper sauce
we really enjoyed the food. Started with beet salad & brussel sprouts. both good. Warm bread was very good. The Mushroom souffle was excellent, very tasty but rich. The duck confit wellington was very good. Service is attentive, though a bit rough.
We used a Groupon for this restaurant which made our dinner a really good deal. The filet mignon and beef bourginon were delicious as well as the beet and arugula salad. Desserts were outstanding, creme brûlée and chocolate soufflé! The house red wine is outstanding, from France.
Second time dining here since Aug. Same great food and service. This time I tried the ahi tuna salad app and salmon for entree. We also ordered French onion soup, ravioli, and beet salad. Finished off with marscapone, lemon tart, and creme brulee for dessert. No disappointments and will return. The $59 three-course menu is a great bargain.
Solid food ,fabulous and attentive service and good value
We will definitely return soon. I loved the beef bourgenion.
Wonderful service and food!
Great dishes, beautiful setting and excellent service. For appetizer we had escargot and french onion soup, Then I had the Filet mignon, my mom had the squid ink pasta with shrimp and my daughter had the mushroom ravioli in truffle cream sauce. For dessert we had the creme brulee and chocolate cake. Everything was delicious! I love the renovations and expanded space not having been there in 15 years. I highly recommend it for those looking for good French food in San Francisco,
We started with the French onion soup which was delicious and the perfect size. I had the NY steak which was tender and had a delicious sauce on top. My daughter had the Beef Bourginon and enjoyed it. Our server was great and there was a little accident with a wine spill by the host and he was so apologetic and comped our dessert and brought us even more wine. Even offered to dry clean my daughters sweater. Honestly it was an accident and the way he went above and beyond was so nice. We’ll come back for the food but also the service!!!
Fantastic a great place for a good atmosphere and great food
Go there it’s a nice evening out
My companion and I celebrated his birthday with dinner at Chouchou, as we do most years, and it was a very happy experience from beginning to end. The restaurant is under new ownership, and has improved quite a bit. The menu is largely what we remembered it to be, albeit with slightly higher prices (as everything is these days). The interior has been completely redone, with the removal of the cramped banquettes, replaced by tables at a comfortably safe distance apart. Our server was upbeat, engaged, prompt, and knowledgable. Several times during our meal he and others (the owners/chef, I presume) stopped by our table to check in. Kudos for just-out-of-the-oven, delicious bread with plenty of butter. My mushroom ravioli first course was delicious, and the boeuf bourguignon with mashed potatoes was hearty comfort food. My companion enjoyed his seared scallops and onion soup gratinee. We shared a side of shaved Brussels sprouts with bacon, which was done perfectly. Profiteroles and creme brûlée rounded out the meal, and both were yummy.
The food was as good as I remembered it from pre-pandemic days, but what really made the experience special was the quality of the service. Bravi, guys. We can't wait to return.
Excellent entrees filet mignonette and ravioli), attentive service.
What a gem. From the ambiance to the delicious food to the wine and the wonderful husband and wife team! We absolutely loved everything about our dining experience. I would not hesitate to recommend this lovely place. This is what I want in a restaurant. Authentic, delicious, unassuming. Thank you fir a perfect meal.
Disappointingly overcooked chicken and pasta. Intrusive but kind service. Side vegetables were well prepared.
Very nice! Thanks a million!
So glad to see new owners here. Has not been this good since Nick left. Please patronize! The food and service are great!
We arrived for our dinner reservation. It was at an earlier time so the restaurant only had one another table occupied as we arrived. No one was at the front when we first stepped in. A young man greeted us with a smile shortly after. Their outdoor dining area was nicely arranged but we decided to seat inside.
Warm bread was presented to our table after we put in our order. Portion of dishes were generous but there was nothing impressive in terms of flavor. Escargots barely had any favor. Rack of lamb was on a greasier side. We asked for medium rare for our New York Steak but it turn out to be medium. We were told that our entrees would be ready shortly as we were still working on our salad and escargots. I believe that our entrees were "fired" earlier than they should be. We had to finish what we had on our table to make space for the entrees, therefore, we felt rushed.
More guests slowly arrived as time went by. Outdoor seatings were almostly taken, which was great for the restaurant. It was obvious that both servers could barely handle the volume. I believe that it was the Chef that gave us the dessert menu as neither of the servers paid attention to our needs. The Tiramisu was overly sweet to our taste.
Our dinner was rushed by the staff while the restaurant was slow but we got less attention as the restaurant got busier. We made a reservation specifically for a birthday celebration. It was noted clearly on the reservation. We overheard another table getting complementary dessert and "happy anniversary" from a server. Unfortunately, there was no acknowledgement from any of the staff at any point for our occasion. We were not looking for any freebies but at least pay the acknowledgement when guests choose to celebrate special occasions at your restaurant.
We wanted to enjoy our time at Chou Chou but it was not meant to be.
Cute little adequate frenchish restaurant. Some menu mistepsteps: seared tuna does not pair well with truffle oil and shaved parmesan, nor did we think cheesy rissoto was a great choice for prawns with pastis. Service was earnest and occasionally in the room. Apparently the dining room had to freeze for servers convenience (door to outside seating propped open ).
Deserts were great. Parking a plus.
The best fillet mingon steak and onion soup I've had. Amazing service with professional waiters, the music does not get in the way of conversation, clean and spacious, very relaxing and mature atmosphere -- perfect for a special occasion. The patio is heated to the same temperature as indoor and cannot be seen from outside, but the ceiling is higher for patio, so it feels much more open than indoor dining. It was for my partner's birthday celebration and they even treated us to a cake and dessert wine on the house. In the future when I need a great restaurant for a special occasion, Chou Chou will be the first choice.
Nice little place to dine french cuisine. The interior room is much more elegant than the outside appearance of this restaurant.
Whole makeover this place got during the pandemic. Would I have liked them to use better made furniture and flooring? Yes. Did it detract from that delicious dinner we just had? Nope, not a bit.
The owners have changed but the menu remains. My mom prior came here often for their escargot and was not disappointed to have it again; bathed in garlic butter each snail in its little space.
The French onion soup, redolent with a hint of sweetness from the caramelized onions, was very good. I’d have liked an herbaceous deeper undertone perhaps but enjoyed the crusty cheese topping at top the bread. The mussels were perfectly cooked in a yummy creamy sauce with herby toasted bread on the side.
I had the mushroom ravioli also in a garlic cream sauce and my Mr. had the duck special with quinoa mushrooms in a rich red wine sauce with cranberries. He enjoyed it all and so did I. The raviolis were al dente with a perfectly seasoned filling.
We ordered two desserts but they generously gave us a third: tiramisu, flan and chocolate mousse cake. The best being the flan with that crackling top and creamy eggy interior.
The portions are quite ample. Absolutely you get your money’s worth here. Oh wait. I forgot…We sat down and were promptly served HOT fresh bread with butter! (The night before we went to a Marin restaurant and paid for this exact same thing-huh?!
Not just that we left here satiated but the food at Chou Chou was terrific as well. It was clear they appreciated our patronage. How nice is that?!
Of course we will come back. Happy they made it through the pandemic. My Mr says it’s to be his new favorite local go to. That means it’ll be mine too :-)
Has new owner and new chef since Q1 of 2020 and managed to survive. Highlights are, filet mignon, Alaskan salmon, risotto, mushroom souffle, onion soup, cream of mushroom, mussels in garlic wine sauce, escargot, bone marrow and creme Brule. Great service and refreshed interior.
Chou Chou is a hidden gem. The service was great, there was outdoor and indoor dining options. The outdoor dining was warm and you did not know you were next to a busy street. Having the whole table do the three course meal was the way to go to sample a little bit of everything! We'll be back.
What a difference with the previous owner! Only a month under new chef and new management.
The menu is three times more extensive. Everything we ordered was perfectly prepared. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of ingredients and preparation.
This should definitely become a destination. French restaurants are so few in SF honoring the long tradition of gastronomic excellence!
Charming outdoor area, free parking in the adjacent lot and superb service all contribute to award Chou Chou infinite kudos !
I had not been to CHOU-CHOU in five years. Now I cannot wait to go back...
Best restaurant experience since COVID/March 2020!
Service attentive and well-paced.
We ordered one pre-fix at $65 (starter, entree, and dessert & a glass of house wine) and one NY Steak. We shared everything and still took home half of our entrees.
Everything on the plate showed attention to detail, super fresh ingredients, well-prepared, and attractively plated.

Disappointing. I had been to Chou Chou several times a couple of years ago and had lovely food and great service in the French tradition, which is always a treat. This time it was different. The waiter told us that Mushrooms Wellington was a French dish -- c'mon now. Of course it's not. Not a great sign, but OK, maybe it's all new to him. While we waited other servers came by to ask us if we wanted dessert. The first course came out at separate times, which left my soup sitting in front of me for 10 minutes while waiting for the beet salad to arrive for my husband. Nevertheless, the soup and the salads were quite good. Then main courses were good, nothing to write home about. My ravioli came overly sauced with a mediocre creme/mushroom/butter and a little touch of creens on the plpate could have cut some of the creaminess and heaviness. But I ate it. The creme brulee the my husband ordered was lovely, simple and served with a strawberry. They comped us a little cake which was terrible -- it tasted like they had bought it at Costco before the pandemic and wanted to get rid of it. Tasted like cardboard and was served too cold with an artificial sugary glaze on the plate. Overall thumbs down. Nice guys, but please train the inexperienced wait staff!
We enjoyed the 3-plate dinner with glass of wine included. Good, efficient service in a pleasant ambiance. In the few times I've been here, I've always had a lovely experience.
Server was friendly and helpful with the new menu. Chef Mina stopped by to chat and recommend wines/dishes.
First time back to Chou Chou Bistro since pandemic closures. The place has been beautifully remodeled and gives off a completely different vibe; all clean lines and very airy.
Although we had reservations, we had to wait at the entrance for a good while, which was a bit of a nuisance but really speaks more to a shortage of wait staff than anything else, and that is something all restaurants are suffering under right now.
Once we were seated, the service was not notch. The lamb and the trout were quite tasty, though the fish was cooked a bit longer than necessary. Very nice wine, and the server was quite attentive. We'll be back.
Amazing service and reasonable prices. Definitely recommend the Duck and the tiramisu. Hidden Gem!
Great neighborhood bistro! Good wine list, fabulous truffle ravioli.
My guest and I were absolutely delighted with our dining experience at Chou Chou last evening! Our server, “Angel” was so nice and attentive. The new interior is beautiful too. Our three course diners were delicious.
My husband and I looove French cuisine and partake often, but we both agreed that the canard confit wellington was one of the best meals we've ever had. Lots of good options for French wines (as well as domestic options), and the boeuf bourguignon was excellent as well. I'll be back within the week.
Dining at Chou Chou was our first indoor fine dining experience in over a year. We could not have chosen better. The dining room is light and bright, having recently been refurbished, the menu is extensive, and the quality of the ingredients and presentation were excellent. It was the perfect restaurant at which to re-enter the world post pandemic.
Everything about Chou Chou is wonderful -- the food, the atmosphere. The updated renovations look great. It is even more welcoming than the last time I went there. I highly recommend it!
Our mains were super as was the soup. The only disappointment was the beet salad as the arugula was not that fresh. The lamb and the steak were very good.
I hadn't been back to Chou Chou for years. Now that I'm vaccinated, I was able to take my sister out for a quiet, safe belated birthday dinner. First time making a dinner reservation in over a year and half. Food & Service were lovely. I plan to return more in the future.
I like this restaurant and will probably go back. The food is Ok and some dishes are exceptional (mussels, boef bourgenon) while others are more ordinary. The biggest issue I have had in the last 2 times that I have gone has been the service. The front end of the service was slow, but the last half was nearly aggressive to get us out. We did end up being the last to leave but were only there for about 95 minutes.
Still one of our favorites. The fish was a little overdone, but otherwise everything was very good.
We did not order from the three course menu as we wanted the mushroom soufflé. The waiter took the order and came back 10 minutes later to tell us that it wasn’t available. We went with the moule frites.
The French onion soup was ok, and the salad was fresh and well dressed.
The entree food was below average, mussels were over cooked, and the confit Wellington was greasy and the meat was dry.
We were charged for the soufflé on the bill, and we had to correct the amount. Service was ok.
Renovation really brightens and updates the ambiance. Very welcoming and the staff are friendly. The food selection is great and the chef was excellent. Overall I will return for another visit.
