Small family owned restaurant at the heart of Southphilly. We are very passionate about authentic Mexican West Coast cuisine. Offering amazing flavors, fresh dishes and dazzling presentations.
Our menu mixes a balance of traditional and contemporary dishes. Where “Mi casa, su casa” is our motto. Executive Chef, Chelo Manzanarez, born and raised in Acapulco Guerrero (West Coast of Mexico) wanted to share his culinary heritage combined with contemporary world flavors and visually tempting dishes. Driven by his family ancient recipes, his passion for creating delighfull food experiences and his untamable determination, he decided to begin (with his family's support) El Mictlan journey.

    The best Mexican restaurant in the city in my opinion! We have been everywhere from California to Oaxaca, Mexico and this is exceptional delicious! My partner and I are almost afraid to write reviews and people catching on. The restaurant is quaint and it's byob! Jose is welcoming and the chef is talented! We just hope always there is reservations as news spread of this amazing restaurant!

    The best Mexican food in the city! The chef is amazing! Every dish he creates is delicious. There is so much flavor and textures and he's not afraid to experiment. I love the authenticity. He does not "water down" the flavors! Thank goodness!!! The service is amazing and supporting local business is so important. We love the BYOB! My partner and I love it here!

    El Mictlan was the perfect place to spend Christmas eve, the small dining room festooned with lights and candles and garlands of greenery. We visited because the restaurant was named in the Inquirer's Vital 76 and the menu looked interesting. We were both blown away. The fall butternut soup, usually dull but reliable, here was dancing with sour and sweet and spicy flavors and dusted with crunchy toasted seeds. The "spicy camohtli," a fried potato appetizer, was crispy, chewy, tender, deeply savory, again alive with heat and acidity. We couldn't stop eating them. The flavors were further livened by sips of the complimentary sparkling wine. There were so many appealing dishes on the menu - grilled octopus in a peanut sauce, kabocha squash croquettes with bacon and serrano chilies, guajillo risotto with scallops, and a long, long list of inventive takes on tacos, tostadas, and other Mexican specialties. Did I mention the beautiful presentation and the exceedingly reasonable prices?
