Friendly nice place the waiter was very courteous and fast and always came and asked if we needed anything till the end when we ordered two last drinks he made it happen for us loved my first time being their thank you!!
We made reservations for this past Saturday night Ocotober 17th at El Torito in Monterey... When the seven of us arrived for dinner, we had to wait maybe 10-minutes, for our table to be ready!! Customers with no reservations were waiting way over an hour to have dinner, so we were certainly happy that we had made reservations through OpenTable!!
Bland tasteless food, chicken fajitas were very dry and veggies over cooked. Brought out entrees and forgot appetiser, when commented server just shrugged and said she’d take it off the check. Handed check without any apology nor asked whether we wanted anything else. Worse service and meal on Cannery Row.
We had been here once before Covid, and we loved the experience and food. We took friends out to dinner now with the outdoor seating. The food was still great, however there didn’t seem to be organization with the tables our server had. She only came once to our table and we were not helped again when we were missing things. I had also ordered a soup with my meal and it never arrived. We tried to pay with one of the hostess who was not busy at the time but would not help saying only the server could do it for us. She was very busy and we had to wait another 15-20 before we could pay and leave when others were waiting for our table. I would still return to El Torito but maybe after Covid or when they have better management on busy nights.
Our dining experience went more smoothly than expected as this was our first time dining at a restaurant since the pandemic started. The service and the food was excellent!
I made a reservation for 6pm on a Friday night. I was seated at approximately 6:05pm which is fine, as the place was visibly packed and our table was being cleaned/disinfected. The only downside I have about this place is that the service can be spotty. It took nearly 20 minutes for a server to even ask us if we wanted water or any drinks. I understand it gets busy but 20 minutes for beverages is a bit too much. After that we ordered and the food came out faster than expected, maybe 15 minutes after we placed out order. The food was VERY flavorful. I ordered a fajitas plate with carne asada and shrimp. All side dishes such as the beans/rice/guac were fantastic. The meat and shrimp were tasty and fresh. I can confidently say that this place is the best Mexican in town. Its a bit pricy for Mexican food, but you pay for the quality of the food and the experience of dining with an ocean view.

I understand things will be different but cold food is cold food! The only thing on our plates that were hot where the tortillas!
It was good for kids, but the service was too casual (read: slow and unprofessional) for my preference. It was friendly and fine, but overall it seemed harder than necessary and almost everything required two requests.
And, given COVID, I did not have a strong sense that they were doing all that I would have hoped for to keep everything sanitized. It's just my impression, but I felt a bit uncomfortable.
First, they seem to be doing the best they can considering the current restrictions.
We had reservations for 8 people at 3pm on a Saturday and checked in 15 minutes early. Was told our table was not ready yet. After 30 minutes of waiting, we were told the table is still not ready as they were still waiting another large group to leave that had been there over 3 hours already. They made alternate seating to fit our group under the tent, which worked out better for us anyway. Server was overwhelmed but was trying his best. Staff were friendly. Food & drinks were fantastic. Definitely will come back again as we love this El Torito.
Suggestion during the current dining restrictions to maybe implement a ninety minute (or 2 hour?) table reservation during busy times so others can also enjoy the venue? Most people should find that amount of time to be well sufficient and it would likely also help the staff & servers as well.
Our waitress was really nice and friendly. The food was great, and the service was even better.
Everyone’s doing the best they can with the outdoor dining edict from the state we just ended up with a bad table it wasn’t their fault everyone is always very nice at this restaurant
Makeshift operation during these Covid times. Accommodations were okay...not great. Food good. Too LOUD music on Taco Tuesday.
Food was delicious. It was just as I remembered it. We are from the SF Bay Area and don't have any El Torritos left. Had the appetizer flautas as a meal and he had the adobo chicken. Ordered guacamole and spicey, cucumber margarita. Our waiter was super nice and attentive. It was cold out but I had a sweater and poncho. A family in shorts and light sweatshirts had to leave before ordering, stating it was too cold. We were under the large, white tent. There were two tables out in the opem, unoccupied with a spce heater between them. I didn't see any space heaters under our tent. The restaurant is by the water. It is always going to be cool. Wear appropriate clothes.
Let me preface this by saying our experience is during COVID-19, and our concerns are based on what El Torito has done to comply with restrictions.
Having said that, don't go after sunset. Tables are all outside, and most have tarps protecting them from wind. Ours didn't and we were cold when the wind started to blow. Our food, also, got cold right away. Making matters worse, our server was taking a break when we were seated (nothing wrong with that), but as a result we had three different servers.
In general El Torito is ok. I would not, however, recommend this location until after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
With the reservation my table was ready . The tables are very well separated and the staff use mask properly .once seated we weren’t provided with a menu because they didn’t have any left and my fajitas needed flavor
Good food. Servers are still getting used to outdoor service.
During Covid 19 out door dining has been limited. El Torito food is good but not of caliber of other local Mexican Restaurants in the area.
Other than the garbage that seems to be lying around blowing off tables from the wind I’d give it a 5.
I understand that they are doing their best during COVID and trying to recreate a dining experience in a parking lot but more attention needs to be paid or you can’t serve as many people. The ambiance was awful. We were seated in the far back part of the parking lot next to an empty lot and
Chain link fence. It was chilly and 1/2 the heat lamps were dead and trash was blowing around off tables.
The chips and salsa were delicious, as were our cocktails. I can’t speak to the food because it arrived cold after 50 minutes. We took it to go and didn’t bother. Our waitress had gone on her lunch break. In the middle of service. On a Friday night.
They should probably just eliminate this entire section from their service and focus on the tented areas which seemed to contain happy patrons.
There is plenty of outdoor seating well spaced. We did not feel like we were close to anyone else and everyone was mindful of mask wearing. The wait staff was friendly and courteous. The food and the margaritas were great.
It with our dining experience in mind that I commend all of the staff at the El Torito to make our evening a success. Being creative with outside dining is a great positive, after all, it is Monterey. Even a deviation from the normal setting did not prevent our servers from giving great service. See you next time!
Went out for dinner on a busy Saturday night. We were seated about 15 minutes after reservation. Took a long time to get drinks due to a server mix up. Service was attentive afterwards. Chips and salsa were tasty while we waited for our food. The table we were seated at looked like it was in a construction zone, the artificial turf area had a lot of trash. Thankfully there were heaters set up. We ordered two different kinds of fajitas. Both were very delicious! Loved the corn cake. Food and service were good, ambiance not so much. I’d come back during the day to enjoy the views.
Excellent food, excellent quality, excellent service, and atmosphere with dining outside unique and new experience.
If you want your clothes to smell like Tacos go there and seat for 20 min
The place is horrible, very unlcean, no sanitization (during pandemic), its so unkept that it's not safe to visit in good times let alone during pandemic.
Had to wait for 1 hour after sitting on the table to get food, Food was smelling so bad that we left it without eating, sweat from the server was dripping onto the food.
Quite unpleasant visit, I would recommend avoiding the place at the very least during the pandemic.
Food was not as flavorful as it was last year.. we visit every summer and after this last visit for brunch the food had no seasoning the tamales eggs and beans had no flavor retried beans go with everything and they were horrible! my husband always looks forward to the Sunday brunch but was very disappointed in the food this Labor Day weekend 😫as was I and waited to be seated even tho we made a reservation ...we won’t return won’t recommend 😩😩

We showed up right on time for our reservation, and were seated immediately. They had 100% outdoor dining due to Covid, and seemed to have a very smooth flow. Being vegan, I had the spinach enchiladas without cheese and it was fabulous. Very friendly service.

The waitress was great very attentive unfortunately there was seagulls and napkins and stuff all over I guess it’s difficult because of the outdoors the food was wonderful and the price was right

We were there for breakfast and the waitress was very accommodating, since we were a few minutes early. It was outside due to the pandemic and the only noise were the sea gulls.
Everything was very good except we got our salad at the same time we got dinner so didn't have time to enjoy our salad first.
My wife and I love El Torito but this visit was terrible. We had reservations for 1pm. Got there early and checked in. It was really windy and super hot so we asked if we could get a seat in the tent. At 1:10 we were notified the table was ready. We went back to check in and when we got to the front of the line we were told to step aside for 4-5 minutes while they got our table ready. 5 minutes pass and we were taken to a table outside of the tent that was dirty. The employee wiped down another table and then ours with the same dirty rag and started walking away. I ask him if he could move us inside and he said we would have to wait 45 minutes to an hour (even though there were empty tables). I looked at my wife and we decided to leave.
Our egg omelette was given to another party. We waited almost an hour to get. No shade or umbrella available to block sun. Waited 20 min. To get bill, and waited 15 min to get change. But I want to add, the food was very good and tasting.
