Fishworks - Covent Garden
Sautéed hand-dived king scallops cooked in white wine and garlic butter, topped with breadcrumbs and Pernod (surcharge £4)
Fish and Chips
Cornish ale battered fish with double-cooked chips, sea salt, minted mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce
No more bread, fish too cooked, potatoes under cooked, slow service, mistake on the order, expensive.
Ordered muscles for starters, only to be told they ran out of muscles by 09:30 on a Saturday night (which is absurd for a fish monger, as the restaurant pronounces itself).
We then ordered sour dough instead of the muscles. After 10 minutes, the waiter returned to inform us that they ran out of bread too.
We asked for no ice with our drinks, but the waiter never mentioned they would be served warm off the shelf. What bothered us most was the attitude of the waiter, who felt the need to underline her point that we asked for no ice.
For mains, we ordered a mixed grilled fish platter, and an ‘oven roasted’ sea bass. The sea bass was evidently grilled, with grill marks throughout. We called the waiter who, with an attitude, insisted that we were wrong about the menu and the sea bass is suppose to be grilled. We insisted that she checked the menu, and when she realized she was mistaken, she said she’ll go and double check with the Chef. When she returned, instead of apologizing for the mistake, she said the sea bass was roasted and finished on the grill (which was a ridiculous excuse), and shamelessly concluded that “we were the first to complain about the sea bass”.
This was our second time at fishworks, and the first at its Covent Garden outlet. Fishworks in Swallow Street was excellent but Covent Garden was an absolute disaster.
We were seated downstairs, and were served by a young female waiter wearing a red trousers and a laced black top.
Meeting up with a friend I hadn’t seen for a while.
We arrived early for our booking on a busy Saturday night …. We received a warm welcome and we were seated immediately which we appreciated very much.
The service throughout our visit was friendly and professional.
I would definitely book again.
A great variety of delicious fish dishes with a few tasty vegan options too. I found the dressed crab a little watery/overpriced but the gnocchi was perfect - more than perfect in fact. I didn't have room for pud but tasted my companion's which was delicious. The service was charming and efficient.
Great food and impeccable service. On the expensive side though so beware.
Lovely restaurant but service seriously slow and lots of items not available
Didja made our dining experience wonderful, such a sweet wonderful hostess, we will come back for sure! Food is wow and fresh, the seabass sooo good, Didja recommendation the brownie with pistachio- its to die for!!!, vegetables were ok arrived late, after main course, new potatoes not so tasty.
Our main dishes were superb, as were the desserts
a side dish of broccoli and green beans with almond was very disappointing
broccoli hardly cooked and green beans were stale and rubbery
everything else was good!
Outstanding food & service! We celebrated a special birthday & it was everything we wanted for a special occasion meal! The staff were so attentive & informative & the sharing platter in particular was incredibly tasty
Delicious food and excellent service from the waitress. Would like to return when we are not rushing off to the theatre!
Convenient location for pre theatre meal around Covent Garden. The service was very good and my tuna was lovely. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal
Great plaice - attentive service, oysters and platters were exceptional
Really enjoyed our evening
The place is quiet small and our table was next to the window where is quiet chilly. We have ordered whole lobster which comes with 1 side. We have chosen some broccoli and potatoes (nothing special, not fantastic but not bad neither), the whole lobster was not bad, quiet good but became cold in a couple of minutes. The service was so so but the waitress was good. They didn’t bring any hot towels and the finger ball, we have to ask for. Finger ball was smaller than a tea cup with some water on the bottom with a 3/4 of the slice of the lemon. That was very funny as for a bill of £98 for 2 whole lobsters, 1 glass of wine and a tea, where only more than £10 is the service charge, at least I will expect some hot towels and a proper finger ball. It was not bad but not good enough to come back. I know places where is a little bit cheaper but the service, food and delivery is on the top. I was thinking to try something new but was disappointed.
The staff were charming and efficient. The food was terrific. A pre-Christmas treat and a first time back in London for a full day out was enhanced enormously by this hospitality.
I have a couple of niggles. The overall temperature in the restaurant was quite cool, possibly due to therenot being many diners. And my fish soup could have been hotter.
Apart from that, the food was great and the set price lunch was excellent value for money.
Overall pretty good. Mussels starter was not great as the mussels were small, overcooked and like rubber bullets. Main course very good, service very attentive.
Have visited three of the Fishworks restaurants and never disappointed, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner.
A warm welcome, comfortable table by the window ,exellent fish and chips and old friends. What better way to spend Sunday lunch time.
Have enjoyed to go to Fishwork in Marylonebone many times. This one in Covent Garden was a disaster. After 1.5 hour we still didn’t get our starters. When that arrived it was cold and un-done…
Very disapproval the money we paid
Some dishes also not on menu as they had run out of ingredient
We were seated at a table by the window that was very draughty. We placed our order for food and drink and then asked if we could move somewhere warmer. They took us downstairs which was fine but I think our order got lost in our moving!! We waited ages for our drinks then for our starters, 3 of us had soup which was cold. They gave us a fresh hot soup. My friend had scallops which she said were delicious. Our mains didn't arrive until we spoke to someone after about 30 minutes... I think they had completely forgotten about us.. the food when it arrived was delicous great fish n chips... lovely evening good food and wine.. just a shame we seemed to be off the radar !!
Starter arrived unfinished but was quickly rectified and was the best part of the meal.
Main course of lobster Thermidor was luke warm and bland and bouillabaisse was lacking in flavour. We waited quite a while for it and then the sides were also wrong but again quickly rectified. Unfortunately we then had no time for dessert so got the bill and on this occasion decided to omit the optional service charge.
Had high expectations but overall a little disappointing unfortunately.
Service was poor as was the food, I can’t say I would be returning.
Fantastic fish platter and brilliant service during a very busy pre theatre dinner service.
Very nice ambience, great service, fine food (if you like fish as I do) and fine wine.
What more can a man ask for?
Almost an hour between sitting down and the main course arriving.
Initial service was good but dressed crab had been poorly prepared and contained lots of shell and cartilage which made eating the meal almost impossible as every fork full had to be closely inspected. Not a great experience and although the meal was returned and removed from the bill we won't be going back.
Waitress couldn’t understand English at all, firstly she took no notice of or looked for our reservation which was for 4 people. My wife I tried to ask “If you haven’t logged in our arrival how will anybody know we are here as it was luckily I spotted the other couple arriving which was just as well as no staff were around the entrance to direct them!
Thank heaven I located an English speaking waitress who was clearly the ‘senior’ of 3 or 4 that were on duty.
She apologised for the first person and was generally helpful; we were served by a 3rd staff member; a gentleman who was very obliging however we had a couple of errors on the orders when they arrived and also had to call back the ‘senior’ lady as the kitchen’s presentation was nothing like the menu stated!
Example - One yes one string bean and on a side dish where we had 2 helpings of the same one was smothered in nut chippings & the other barely any.
We have dined here before but this was a 4/10 performance at best & the Restaurant was not busy.
Based on above antics we didn’t bother with dessert or beverages and went elsewhere.
To then have the affront to charge £198 for 2 sub standards courses means a return to Fishworks is unlikely; shame as this was about our 4th visit to this chain in 2 different locations over the last few years.
Lovely restaurant, friendly staff and gorgeous fresh mackerel with broccoli and cauliflower. Perfect!
Excellent lunch at Fishworks as always. We had plenty of time to catch up together without being rushed, which was much appreciated. Food wonderful. Will definitely return
Amazing food, great atmosphere. Highly recommend. Thanks
Service was slow waited too long for our drinks and food order to be taken.
One waitress poured our water and didnt say hello, smile or seem to have any social skills. I later caught her attention to order, however she mouthed 'bill' and went over to another member of staff asking for the bill. He then informed her we hadn't even ordered yet.
We were there just over an hour and had a £14 service charge added to the bill.
Beautiful seafood just such a shame about the service.
Food was fine but service was poor even though restaurant was extremely quiet. One gent was very apologetic and helpful but staff were busy setting up tables for evening service rather than clearing our table for 20 mins and it was very quiet
Our main courses were delicious. But the waiter didn’t warn us when we ordered fish soup with toast and rouille for a starter that there was no bread. He brought the fish soup but the very important accompaniments were not there and he had to be persuaded to bring the rouille. Customers need to be warned if a dish is not as described on the menu.
I was extremely disappointed with the service at fish works. As someone with a nut allergy I am always made to feel welcome within any restaurant I go in. Unfortunately, I did not feel this at all with fish works. In fact I was constantly told no without providing me with any alternative and quite frankly I was treated with an extremely rude approach throughout the evening. Sadly, I would therefore not be recommending fishworks and I will not be going back
Tables squashed could here adjoining tables not at all romantic . Nice food but forgot one starter.
A little on expensive side for quality
Perfect in every way. Great manageress and waitress who remembered my wife and I from our last visit 2 months ago
The food is incredible, we've never had fish taste this good before.
Very good apart from inedible old tocket served with scallops starter which should not have been sent out
