This place is a ton o fun! great drinks and great ambiance. the coconut shrimp was good too. Friendly staff. Nice outdoor area too.
I always love coming here! Great ambience, great staff, and always a good time!
Great service! The outdoor seating option is cool and comfortable. There are coverings and you are overlooked by a tiki god. Our server, Justin is knowledgeable and friendly. The cocktails were fantastic. It was a great time out.
Delicious drinks and a selection of noshies to soak up the rum! The staff are helpful and kind. This was out second visit, and we'll be back many more times.
The waitress was very nice, and working super hard, and the drinks were delicious. I got the coconut shrimp, and they were a bit undercooked, but otherwise the food was yummy too. The one thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that you're given an hour and a half reservation, but then they told us to leave after only having been there for one hour. The place was super busy, so the service was very slow. We had just ordered our second round of drinks when the host came to kick us out, and so when they came to our table we felt really rushed to finish them. We asked for to go cups, and they said they would get them, but never did. So we just chugged our drinks and headed out.
Forbidden Island isn't just our favorite place in Alameda, it's one of the best Tiki Bars in California! The decor is spot-on and the service friendly, but the real star of this show is the drinks. All of them tasty -- seriously have never had a bad drink here.
I wish the place were a little larger as it can fill up quickly, but that's part of the tiki bar charm I guess.
Great tiki cocktails as always.
Awesome as always! Comfortable neighborhood casual Tiki. The drinks are spot on and the staff is 5 Star friendly and engaging. A must stop for me when I’m here in the Bay Area!
First time coming, won’t be our last. The ambiance, the service, even the yummy snacks. A cute little place that takes you back in time to a far away island get away
Always a favorite and their outdoor seating is perfect during these times!
I will update my review when I sober up. Great place. Happy place. Sara "no need for an h" is the bomb.
John "the singing waiter" was super helpful as I have decided to begin my journey to being a member of the Forbidden Island Kill Devil Club.
Lucky Tip: Make a reservation for the bar or a table. It's such a cool experience inside with amazing decor, drinks, and people to experience. I love the back patio but being inside transports you away to a magical place.
The food is fried. It's actually really good but don't go there thinking dinner. The shrimp, mozzarella, and chicken nuggets are really good. This is a bar, not a sit-down restaurant.
They have live music. I saw Jinx Jones there and they had the music so perfectly piped through the bar -- that standing in the back you could hear it clearly but still talk. I was really impressed by the balance of the sound quality and the level of volume. I am headed back on 8/28 for the first concert post COVID.
I love this place and wouldn't change a thing about it -- other than making it bigger and closer to my home.
We made a reservation for 5:00, yet we had to wait in a long line and they sat a party before us that had a later reservation time. We were only able to purchase one round of drinks, and we wanted a second but we're told no without a reason, so we left! Service is typically good here the drinks are good and it's a fun atmosphere! They're covid practices seem safe, but they're still a few patrons who decide that they want to smoke, or not where their masks when walking by your table or entering the building.
Great tiki bar with open outdoor patio. Had a team parent meet up and they were very accommodating of multiple separate bills and a group that waxed and waned over 2 hours. Amazing drinks including beers for the non tiki drink afficionados.
Try the Macadamia Nut Chi Chi! Best cocktail on earth. I prefer it over ice — but the default is blended/frozen.
Food is obviously not the highlight, however cocktails seem to be a focus. Cool. Count me in. Drinks were mediocre at best. Reviews seemed positive, so we thought it would be a fun place. Service was slow. Servers were rude. Seemed surprised —Yes, we would like to order drinks. On arrival we were warned we only had 90 minutes and then our table would be for another group. Wow—awesome welcome.
I really like the atmosphere with the tiki and tropical ambiance. Great music. Autumn is a wonderful server. I think your website could be improved. Was not user friendly for ordering concert tickets.
Always a great time!
Drinks are alright, decoration was pretty, though half of chairs where clearly brought in a rush, as they were plain.
Our problem was the service, which was very bad. It was pushy and adamant in us ordering more drinks and all interactions were forceful and/or awkward. We had to remember the waiter several times for our orders and we didn't get it anyway. And when reminded, the waiter was snappy about forgetting our order.
Overall every interaction was an unpleasant one.
Forbidden Island was our favorite tiki bar this far! Sarah (bartender) was so kind and made us feel like home! Miami Dave was a refreshing personality as well! He made us instantly feel welcome and taken care of!
We had a great time, everyone enjoyed themselves!
Great as always!
We go here pretty often and have always had a good time. Sat at the bar and Luis was amazing. Best bartender we've had there. Extremely kind and fun to talk to and his drinks were by far the best we've had at Forbidden Island.
This was our first visit after a year of talking about going! We went with another couple and sat inside at a booth! We had the most fun, eating and drinking! The inside was pretty empty as opposed to outside, but being our first time there, we wanted to feel the total tiki experience! The decor was fabulous, I am a huge vintage tiki fan and know the real deal! Our server was excellent and very accommodating! The cocktails were delicious and strong! We will definitely be back!
I still love this place and it has been a hard & desperate slog through the COVID…but guys, your outdoor space is in terrible need of a refresh! The patio feels dirty & broken, not kitschy. Some of the bar food is kinda limp and greasy (spicy chicken and sweet potato fries) & service is haphazard. Your drinks still kick a&*, which is why I will keep coming back! And I hope we all continue to support this gem to fund & channel the refresh that it deserves!
Fun place to celebrate something or just hang out.
The bar seemed busy, which is to be expected for a Friday night, but the staff was very attentive and we got our drinks in good time. Our reservation was for 5:30 and our table was booked for the rest of the evening after our 90minute window, but they had a table ready for us aside when we ended up staying later than expected.
Friendly staff, delicious drinks!
Ryan is awesome. The guy checking people in needs better people skills.
Thank the Tiki Gods! Forbidden Island has survived COVID and is still as great as ever! They now have a recommended reservation system, which I would strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of. On a busy Sunday afternoon with a line of thirsty folks waiting outside, I was able to walk right in and get choice bar seats, just because I planned ahead. They now have a social distancing seating arrangement, so fewer people inside, less noise. But the drinks are still superb, and the bar food is exactly what it's supposed to be. And the staff, still as welcoming and congenial as always! For real '60s Polynesian Pop ambience, value and really well-made cocktails (not those syruppy-sweet zombie-wanna-bes you get elsewhere) nothing in the Bay Area beats The Island.
fun spot. nice folks. wish i were local . id pick a fav night and be there every week .
Great ambiance. Drinks is stroooong. Delicious as well. The staff are super fun. We had a date indoors. The patio seemed like a parking lot with shade and chairs.
Absolutely love this place, drinks are to die for. My favorite is the Chamborlada.
My friends and I love coming here. The drinks and service are great. Thank you!
5 stars as always.
We had to wait a few minutes after our reservation for our patio table to open up. Once seated our order was taken pretty quickly. Drinks were good. We asked if a table opened up inside if we could switch and the hostess was very diligent in letting us know once a table became available. Honestly the best part of our night was our server! Miami Dave aka Justin was amazing!!! He handled the amount of patrons he was waiting on with grace and ease and was always so positive. Wished he could’ve joined our party he was so awesome! His drink recommendations were top notch as well!
Had a wonderful time in a beautiful atmosphere! Can’t wait to go again!
After 15 years, Forbidden Island is still the best tiki bar in the Bay Area. All of the drinks are excellent, the staff is friendly and informative, and the outdoor space is a wonderful place to spend a warm summer afternoon or evening with friends.
Thank you, Forbidden Island! We waited until vaccinated to come back, so it's been about two years, and it was actually somehow more charming than we remembered. Attentive and friendly service, delicious snacks, and ROCKIN' drinks.
This Tiki Bar has some of the best tropical drinks.
I did not like when the host seated us he immediately told us that we had to leave after 90 minutes! I felt rushed and the service was slow. The ambiance is good - but doesn’t follow the true Hawaiian spirit of relax and enjoy yourself. The MaiTai was fabulous and I would order it again.
Hidden oasis in the island city.
