   French Crust has had its ups and downs, but now with a whole new team (manager, chef, bartender, even menu!) it is on its way back up. We hadn't been there for a while, but we saw the new dinner menu that felt much more like the old Jean-Robert Bistro menu, we decided to go. First, the place is beautiful. It is truly a Paris bistro design. The menu is not huge but it is spot-on. The Audrey cocktail was wonderful. We shared the poutine, and it is unlike any poutine you have had. Think puffs of potato, not fries. Not too much cheese and the gravy they use is divine. I didn't think I would like it, but I wanted to lick the plate. I got the mussels, again a risk in Cincinnati. I was told they are purchased from the fresh seafood store in Findlay market. They were wonderful, fresh, and in a beautiful sauce. I got fries on the side which made it a perfect dinner. Husband got the chicken. It was a heavy meal, but he really enjoyed it. "This chicken is done perfectly". Wine list is lovely, desserts are imaginative and excellent. I recommend 10/10. (Price is right too!)

   We had a very unsatisfactory experience at French Crust. Our server was trying her best but it was clear the place was experiencing serious staffing/management issues. As soon as we were seated our server appeared and asked us if we were ready to order. We said we needed a minute to look at the menu and then did not see her again for 20 minutes. When she reappeared we ordered an appetizer and two entrees. It then took more than an hour for our entrees to arrive at the table and we never got our appetizer. We saw at least one table walk out without their food because the service was so slow/nonexistent. The food was tasty and well prepared but nothing about it really stood out. The food was fairly basic and unimaginative, with nothing really creative or bold about it. It was moderately priced, with most plates costing $20-$30, but didn't really seem worth it. On the plus side the place was comfortable with nice decor and ambiance.

   I've eaten as this restaurant several times and found it to have a pleasant atmosphere and good food. The service, however, tends to be slow and somewhat tentative. On Saturday, they had very few customers. We told them that we had theater tickets and ordered as soon as we could, but our food took a long time and we had to plead for the check.

   Like many Cincinnati restaurants, it suffers from insufficient staff. Our server, Molly, was conscientious and pleasant but clearly trying to handle too many things. It did not appear that the restaurant had a dedicated bartender (on a Saturday night). Servers appeared to be preparing the drinks themselves which added to 'waiting' time. Despite advertising itself as a bistro, it lacks some of that urgency, speed, rustic appeal that bistros normally have. Food was fine, wine was fine, we didn't have time to try a dessert (another lost opportunity for the restaurant). Still on my list of places to go to, esp for weekend brunch at the bar.

    We had to leave the restaurant before our food was delivered to make it on time to the show we had tickets for. We had been waiting for an hour and a half and two tables who were seated after us received their food before us. We had to leave without eating dinner, which was a shame because everything on the menu sounded great but waiting an hour and a half for dinner with no warning is absurd.

    This is my favorite place in all of Okyar. You walk in and you immediately feel that wonderful metropolitan French bistro sort of feeling everybody’s there. All the tables are filled out, laughing talking and eating delicious food. This is part of John Robert’s legacy and his wife runs this place immaculately. Can’t wait to go back.

    I ordered quiche and it came burnt to a crisp. It was totally black and brown. It should have never even left the kitchen. I did request another piece and was accommodated, however, the second piece served was brown and dried out. Service was extremely slow and the server was not friendly.     When the food arrived, 65 minutes after ordering it, it was actually very good. I can recommend the food but the kitchen obviously was overwhelmed. The kitchen delay was not the server’s fault of course. However, in 90 minutes, he visited the table only three times: 1) 10 minutes after being seated. Noticing the enfolding chaos and that not one of the 15 tables in sight had food on it, we immediately ordered drinks and food when he first showed up. 2) the hostess brought us our drinks so he decided he didn’t need to visit us again until 45 minutes in to check on our drinks, which had been empty for a long time. Somebody else brought the second round, 3) at the 75 minute mark when the food arrived (which someone else had delivered of course), I asked that person for the check. The server mercifully presented it to us at the 90 minute mark. 3 visits in 90 minutes, and I wasn’t the only diner with this experience. He and the other server handling our part of the restaurant were never in sight. Just…gone. People walked out continually. Those who stayed went to the bar to get their own drinks while they waited for their food. Worst server experience of all time. Helpful tip for the restaurant: when your customer demand exceeds your ability to supply it (for whatever legitimate reason), don’t fill up your reservation book. Turn people away and deliver an excellent experience to those you can serve. They’ll post great reviews and the people you couldn’t serve that night will read those reviews and come back. But when you seat 15 tables of people and don’t serve them food for 75 minutes, you have now alienated those 15 tables of people and everyone those people told about their experience that night for a very long time. Don’t do it. And apologies aren’t enough on a bad night of service. Comp a $15 appetizer that costs you $6 at 60% gross margin. That $6 investment ensures I return to spend another $100, thereby earning you $60 that you’ll never see from me again.

    Read the other recent negative reviews before coming here during what may be a busy time (e.g., weekend nights), even with a reservation. The restaurant was simply not functioning well, primarily (it seemed) due to lack of staff. We know this issue has hit many restaurants occasionally over the last few years, but as the owner/manager, you must adjust the table count to the team cooking/serving, or you end up with a disaster. No coverage and no food served. Walked out. Hopefully, they can get this figured out, but beware…if your bread order takes 30 minutes to arrive, you will be there for 2+ hours.

    This place used to be okay. We came in and it was two older couples and no one else in the restaurant. We sat down to eat and looked at the menu. Nothing was interesting or inspiring. We drank a bit of water and left. Went to Abigails and had a great meal.

    Our waiter, Joey was pleasant, attentive and gave great recommendations. We had and loved the Quiche, Eggs Benedict, Chocolate Almond Croissant and Almond Croissant. It was a lovely meal!

    The food quality was disappointing. I had the croissant with tomato, avocado and brie. The avocado was a spread that was barely there and there were two tiny pieces of brie. It was all laid awkwardly on an upside down croissant. My husband had the salmon croissant, which was actually a salmon salad croissant. One of my kids had the Purdue croissant which was very sticky and hard to eat.

    It was an off night. Just before the FC game and three servers had called off. The staff did their best despite the odds. We had wine and a delicious meal. We our server John provided us with complimentary desserts and a heartfelt apology.

    Host seated a couple and then we stood for five minutes at the host desk while he did various chores. He then had us wait longer while he said he would check on a table even though you could see open set up tables from where we stood. Food and service was great once we were seated.Jean Robert, RIP, would not have been impressed by the host.

    This was our first visit to the French Crust Cafe & Bistro, and it won't be our last. The cafe was moderately busy, prior to an FC Cincinnati game & being the weekend, most tables were filled. Our service was a little slower, but we didn't mind, it helped us have a more leisurely dining experience. Our food, starting with appetizers and ending with dessert, was delicious. We enjoyed our experience & hope to visit again!

    We have eaten at this restaurant several times in the past. Our food overall was very good. Great flavors, etc. My wife ordered an entree featuring Shrimp and Scampi- there were only 3 small Shrimp and ZERO Scampi’s. !!!ZERO!!! Service was non existent Ambiance = all the lights were on as bright as possible- giving the restaurant the ambiance of a cafeteria. “ better luck next time????
