Excellent tasting menu, service and ambiance.
The restaurant has elevated GTA ‘s culinary offer to the next level. Great work !!
Thrilled to notice the latest, ‘Fall tasting menu offering’ - ‘Leaves change, Brisk morning’ on their website two weeks back, I immediately took action and made reservation.
With Scandinavian, Japanese and other seasonal exotic ingredients that include Venison, Horse meat, Shima-Aji, Uni, Maitake mushroom, Ikura, Bone Marrow, Lobster, Duck…..etc, coming out in full force. The brand-new and revamped tasting menu looks like another delightful and fun culinary adventure in the making?! I cannot wait!
This evening, after settling down at our intimate table, close to the open kitchen. My foodie partner and I each ordered a glass of nicely chilled, relatively uncommon, spicy and floral Manseng based white, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and patiently await for the delivery of our food by the now, well acquainted and friendly staff.
Our reaction after the completion of the well proportioned meal? A few loud and satisfying burps coupled with a collective exclamation of OMG!! For me, the experience was like being nostalgically transported back to one of my Tokyo food-crawl and having a Michelin star caliber western /Japanese fusion meal at say, Le Sputnik, DEN or Sincere….etc......but at only a fraction of the price!
The meal was ‘ mucho-memorable ‘, the execution near flawless ( only minor miss was the slight heavily-handed use of salt in the horse tartar and rye crisp), the plating artfully presented, the food tasted increasingly wonderful as the meal progresses, with links to some interesting textural interplay, the wine pairing spot-on, the service warm and attentive……etc.
In summary…..the total package was most gratifying and at only $95 for 10 courses, incredible value and did not disappoint! There were even a few wow factors popping up now and then.…..a rarity nowadays!
When it comes to tasting menu, “ALO” is definitely the undisputed occupant of the ‘Downtown Iron Throne‘. However, up north in the land of the 905, "FRILU" is the new 'Omakase king of the North'!
Services are excellent, very friendly. I would recommend to my friends. Looking forward to try the veggie menu.
We went to Frilu for our 3rd wedding anniversary. We wanted a unique dining experience and something delicious of course. We got way more than we expected. The service was exceptional. They described in such vivid detail every dish we were served as well as the drinks we were given. I highly recommend the non-alcoholic accompaniment as it was so unique and really complimented the meal. They were very thoughtful and gave us a small bouquet of flowers and a happy anniversary note written on a disk of wood. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Be aware that this is a tasting menu dining experience. We will be going back soon with my dad and some friends.
All courses were presented exquisitely. Can’t say all the dishes overwhelmed me taste wise. We order the wine accompaniment and somehow we were left with no wine for the main course. When we asked, we were told that the pouring for the previous course was for 2 courses. We were not told that and the amount poured certainly would not have indicated that. Strange that they would not have just poured any other 1.5 oz. also they should have told us that 3 of the pairings was with sake. We are not same fans and would have preferred to substitute wine. We will not go back. Not the WOW we were expecting for the money spent.
This is my second time in two weeks. I still love the Pumpkin Patch, the desserts. Surprise that they add a pork dish before the duck rice, the pork is so delicious. Thank you JV . Definitely will visit again in a near future.
We enjoyed every dish! Would definitely come back for another season's menu!:)
Very nice dishes and you’re up for a surprise at every course. They have one tasting menu per season which I think is disappointing because I wouldn’t want to have the same menu twice. I suggest that the very nice chef offers 2-3 menus per season. Great experience and fantastic staff
Amazing experience all around! Both food and service were outstanding.
So happy to see a top notch tasting menu restaurant in Richmond Hill! Service was wonderful, everyone is very welcoming and know the dishes well. You would feel well taken care of yet you are not at the tip of toes.
Food was very creative, love the surprising combination and the team's thought of names too! Definitely will come back and spread the word. Thank you everyone at Frilu for making the night so wonderful!
One suggestion would be to put the parking suggestions on the website, it was quite confusing of where to park.
The winter menu is amazing! JV did a marvelous job, the pumpkin patch is so tasty. I am not a sweet person, but the yogurt and parsnip desserts, I can have seconds any time! The cabbage is a surprise too! Thank you JV, Kelli, Leo and your staff for giving me a wonderful dining experience! Definitely I will come again!
I was genuinely surprised to find a high-end "omakase-style" restaurant in Thornhill. The Fall fixed menu was as advertised - earthy and rich. Very unexpected combinations - tofu and sea urchin, mushroom and salmon roe
I liked the minimalistic design: nothing to steer attention from the experience of taste buds.
The service was exceptional.
Will come back to Winter menu
Great food and pairing experience. It's very re-comforting to know they use local seasonal ingredients in the menu - it is kind of fresh and "innovative". It was also interesting to see pairing including a variation of SAKE, made the experience very different to our recent visit to ALO - while having similar experience.
They also have a quite interesting selection of japanese/asian beers that we found interesting.
Restaurant has limited space, making it quite intimate, and has a very minimalist set-up. No overwhelming deco nor visible bar - it was very zen. I would have loved to see the lights deemed a little bit to make it cozier - lighting was a bit too much for an evening dinner.
Food and 10 meal course was amazing and variated. Must experience
Initial seating was dreadful(next to the privy corridor). Very loud, boisterous party overpowering the rest of the restaurant. Many of the dishes were inartfully executed both in terms of the taste and texture pairings (looking at you, Pumpkin). The restaurant's decorations (fake lichen, for example) were a hit-or-miss proposal. Excellent wine list. Front of House service was excellent, however there was an inconsistency in dish timing that frequently left us wondering what was happening with our dishes.
The rice was not good and one wine pairing didnt work but other than that we really love the place and the staff. We will come back with our friends :)
Excellent service and food. The presentation and creativity were superb throughout each of the courses. Will definitely recommend to friends.
Great food, good pairing of wine with the menu. Thanks for a great meal for my husbands birthday
This was my second time at Frilu since my first time there was very good. So this time I recommended some friends to go with again. They had just changed from summer to fall menu a few days ago. We all agreed that the fall menu was not that good. Not sure if we will come back again.
Fantastic service and food! Really exceptional and will go again!
First night of the fall menu and nothing disappoints. John, Kelly & team know how to make food and liquid use every sense....from eyes to nose to taste.....congratulations and look forward to seeing you again soon.
The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was quite beautiful. I enjoyed the subtle Asian touches in the menu. There were definitely stand-outs in the tasting, there were other dishes that fell flat for me. They might focus too much on technique and presentation and not enough on flavour. I'm curious to see what their fall menu will look like.
Good quality and unique experience uptown!
Wide range of ingredients, fun and original pairings, seasonal menu, would visit again
This was not a dinner. It was a dining experience. I would rather have 9 innovative and beautiful dishes as opposed to one big slab of steak for the same price.
Food is for the senses, both visual and aromatic and this meal clicked all those boxes.
The talented chef was nice enough to visit each table at the end of the meal.
The food and service at Frilu was excellent. The food hit all the right notes for flavour and presentation. Service was performed by the Chef and knowledgeable servers. Each dish both excited and satisfied our appetite.
Great fine dining experience north of Toronto. Very creative menu and great attention to details.
Noise level is high only because of the design of the dining room. There is a lot of echo likely because there is nothing to absorb the noise.
This is one place I can tell the chef puts his heart into the design of the dishes. High quality fresh ingredients are apparent. Every dis is a piece of art likely from Japanese influence.
A majority of the wait staff know the menu well.
This is a rare find in the GTA and particularly in North GTA.
Not only was the food delicious, the service is what blew this experience over the top for both me and my partner; they catered to our specific dietary restrictions and made sure we were content and comfortable the whole way through
If i could give Frilu 6 stars ... I would. I took my mom out for my birthday and right off the bet starting with the staff, service was tentative and friendly. We also love the fact that they have a non alcoholic pairing option.
Chef and team had our lots of thoughts and creativity to make the dishes tasty, playful at times and definitely a feast for the eyes as well.
Very happy that we have this wonderful dining option in Thornhill. Would definitely come back to try their fall menu.
Excellent food and presentation of food. We did the pairing with the menu and it outstanding.
John and His team produce the best dining experience in the City....PERIOD. Don’t be fooled by the idea of not drinking alcohol BUT choose the non-alcoholic pairing
With a kitchen anchored by a chef/owner ( John-Vincent Troiano ) who had honed his skill, not only in our local Japanese Kaiseki temple – Hashimoto, but also in kitchens like the world famous NOMA and San Francisco Michelin 3* BENU, it has become a prime target on my gastronomic radar screen. However, when, with the help of its adventurous Nordic and Japanese themed tasting menu, it was propelled onto Air Canada’s 2019 Best New Restaurant List (receiving a ranking way higher than other notable new stars like Don Alfonso 1890), It automatically became a ‘must-try’ on my book!
This evening, for once, without the need to brave the notorious rush hour Don Valley traffic, my foodie brother-in-law and I drove with heightened anticipation to ‘FRILU’ for our annual, men-only, joined birthday ritual.
Nestled within an un-assuming road side strip plaza on Yonge Street and in an area surrounded by predominantly Persian and Korean businesses. We entered the premise to find a quaint and cozy oasis, with neutral, minimalist, Zen themed décor.
With a ‘trust-the-chef’, Omakase style, tasting menu as our only choice, we settled down with our glass of lip-smacking, food friendly, Mittnacht-Klack’, 2015 Alsace Gewürztraminer and waited to be ‘wowed ‘?!
Well, I am pleased to report that this evening’s meal must be, hands-down, the most enjoyable tasting menu experience I have had in Canada for quite! A meal worthy of a Michelin star! Rare ‘wow-factor’ that had eluded many of my past meals has suddenly re-emerged! Every component and aspects of our dining experience were near flawless. From the super-friendly, attentive and professional service, to the beautiful plate presentation, to the dishes’ unique creativity and use of exotic seasoning, to the perfect execution of the ingredients, to the resulting delicious, complex flavor profile and its associated equally, wonderful textural interface, to the meal’s amazing value…..the accolades can go on and on!!
I'LL BE BACK! AND SOON!
Where was Frilu when we lived around the corner for 30 years.
However, driving from downtown, where we now live, was definitely worth our while.
Liked the fact there is just one set menu, nothing else to choose from.
The presentation is superb on different plates each time. Expertly explained by staff. delivery of courses nicely timed, nothing is rushed. Staff is extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive.
We liked all items on the menu, but the halibut, the pork and the opening dish " Freshing" stood out.
Will definitely be back.
Wish this restaurant a very long, successful run at this location.
What a gem. Thornhill is very fortunate.
Absolutely sublime. Do not be swayed by the location - this is worth a trip. The influences from the chef's stints at Noma and Benu show in the clever use of ingredients and the subtle artistry in presentation. Our servers were outstanding - and extremely knowledgeable in steering us through the excellent choices of sake, including a very rare sparkling sake. The finest meal we had in Toronto.
It was my husband and I first time dining at Frilu after hearing great reviews about it. We weren't disappointed at all! We ordered the non-alcohol pairing, which we thought was an outstanding pairing! We had the summer tasting menu, all the courses was outstanding and couldn't wait to go back again!! Definitely recommend to family and friends!
Unbelievable dining experience. A must try. The service was excellent, and just as much a part of the evening as the food.
Most of the food was good, although the crab was tasteless and the noodles with it were not at all to my liking. The horsemeat was ok, but I hated the semi-raw egg that came with it.
The main problem was that the air conditioning was set at way too cold a temperature and was aimed directly to where I was sitting instead of up into the air.
When I moved the waitress said I’d be colder there because the air was aimed at my new location. Not true! This was the same waitress who said the name of the grape that made my wine was “gros”, which is only part of its name
Awesome dining experience! The non alcohol pairing is perfect as well! Really enhances the flavor of each course! Will definitely return in a few months when their Fall menu arrives!
This is my second time visiting Frilu, and again was my experience incredible! My guests and I had the summer tasting menu. If you are looking to try Canadian farm-to-table cooking in a completely exciting and non-traditional style: Frilu does not disappoint. Over the last two menus that I have tried, Chef J.V. has brilliantly put together an amazing array of tasting menu dishes. The selection of alcohol was also fantastically put together by the front of house manager Kelli. Who could also forget the amazing service delivered by our server Leo, who was knowledgeable and took detail to each step of our meal. Will highly recommend to all of my friends and family. If you are planning on going, don’t hold back! Do the tasting menu and the alcohol pairing!!!!
Food and service were both excellent, can't wait for their Fall tasting menu!
