   １月１３日に伺いました。お正月らしく羽子板の食器や根引き松をあしらったお料理など、どれも目に美しく、口にも美味しかったです。主人の誕生日でしたが、サプライズでケーキを用意してくれていて、感動しました。大将、女将さんの対応もフレンドリーで良かったです。また行きたいと思います。

   Chef Maeda prepared an amazing kaiseki meal that was orchestrated like a symphony of the very finest quality ingredients, whether the fish, the beef or the fresh wasabi. Each course was a mini work of art, drawing on the fresh flavors of each ingredient. Definitely one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere. And you can’t beat the one-to-one service, with the chef describing and explaining the features of each course. An unforgettable dining experience.

   You will find no better way to appreciate the passionate and artistic culture of Kyoto than this, a kaiseki dinner prepared by Head chef Shigehiro Maeda (and his wonderful staff) at Gion Hanamai. Chef Maeda specializes in obanzai dishes (meaning the majority of ingredients and dishes are specific to Kyoto) and as such his creative kaiseki dinners are incredibly unique in terms of selection, flavor, and presentation. He digs for the most tender bamboo shoots in the hills around Arashiyama. He picks delicate perilla flowers daily. His clay pot finale features seasonal fish and the finest local rice and Kyoto spring water and is made specially for each guest. Aside from the amazing food, Gion Hanamai is also a beautifully decorated, well-lit, yet intimate space. You will be served on antique and fine dishware as lovely as the food. While the staff are not fluent in English, they are well prepared with pocket translators. You should bring one too, or your phone, it is worth the sparkling conversation with Chef Maeda and his staff, who were funny, lively, and informative. My hope is that many visitors to Kyoto will continue to visit Gion Hanamai and show appreciation for hard-working and talented chefs like Chef Maeda, who care deeply about sharing their world through food.

   We had an outstanding meal here, a thoughtful experience from beginning to end. The restaurant seats a total of six guests, so it is truly an intimate space. The food is a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with multilayered flavors. The staff is very friendly and happily explained each course with a handheld translator. I’m afraid we are quite spoiled now- it will be hard to match the quality of our meal!

   Gion Hanamai was a true highlight of my and my husband’s trip to Japan! One of the most beautiful and delicious meals we’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy, we will not forget our time at this special place in Kyoto. Chef and his team treated us like honored guests (and we didn’t even order the most expensive dinner—though looking over at our neighbor’s plates I’d wager it would have been well worth it). The 6 seater counter was very intimate, and we got to interact with chef and his team throughout the evening. You will not regret choosing this restaurant!

    It was a fun experience to not miss out on! The food was amazing, ingredients were fresh, and the service was absolutely fun. Both the chef and staff were welcoming with good sense of humor. They were also informative and explained every dish. It shows how much care and thought was put into the coarse. This was definitely the best meal I’ve had so far in this trip.     All dishes in traditional succession, taking you through an unconventional journey of Kyoto flavours. Superb selection of ingredients carefully prepared to bring out the best of their nature. The firefly squid clay pot rice and grilled Oumi beef both deserve special mentions. Excellent service and sake selection. This restaurant has a special place in our hearts.

    We had an incredibly fun and fantastic experience at Gion Hanamai! Highly recommend dining here while staying in Kyoto. Each dish was prepared with care - the ingredients were all so fresh that even for not-so-experienced diners like us, we could taste the freshness and quality. It’s been a few days but my husband is still dreaming about the bamboo shoots we had during our meal. The staff have translation devices on hand and on top of their amazing food preparation, they spent a lot of time chatting and entertaining us guests. They also pre-printed a menu for each person showing the details of the meal in your language to help us learn more about each dish. For future diners - even if you might be a picky eater, you should try to be open minded and try new things here. My husband does not normally eat sushi but he tried it here and now loves it. Otherwise, the chef is very accomodating for food allergies or aversions. Please let them know ahead of time - they only seat 6 ppl at the counter per night! With the amount of preparation they need to do for a kaiseki meal, they might not have a lot of extra ingredients to substitute requests after arrival. We had an amazing meal at Gion Hanamai, thank you Gion Hanamai for hosting us. We will surely be back to visit again! The food here is 超美味しい

    Don’t second guess it, make the reservation! Intimate experience with you and a few others for an exceptional multi course dinner. Easy to get to by taxi, food is incredible-Just trust the chef. Download google translate for even more fun if you need it. A meal you will never forget!

    We're a family of foodies that loves to travel and eat great meals. I wondered if I could ever experience the fine dining experience in Kyoto - because 1) every other website in Japanese was too hard to navigate or 2) simply had no openings and 3) not that many places use Open Table. Stop scrolling and find a time to book here immediately, b/c honestly this place was worthy of two Michelin stars. If you love to eat...you need to be here. Chef Shigehiro and his team prepared an amazing Kaiseki of ten or so courses for us that was a wonderfully complex progression of temperatures, textures and flavors. My wife has a couple of minor dietary restrictions that an email exchange easily sorted through. The chef and his staff were wonderfully accommodating , friendly and funny and the food was simply out of this world. We'll definitely be stopping in again the next time we're in Kyoto.

    We spent a beautiful evening at the Gion Hanamai, and we were absolutely mesmerized by how incredible the food was. Each dish kept on getting better and better.     This is an absolute hidden gem- we know it’s going to become one of the most sought after reservations in town at some point. The chef was incredibly welcoming and a true talent. We felt honored to talk with him and eat his creations. The ingredients were delicious, fresh and so well crafted. If we are ever in Kyoto again we will absolutely be coming back again. In fact, we had dinner at a Michelin star restaurant two nights after our meal and Gion Hanamai and agreed that we enjoyed Gion Hanamai more. Must try!

    We had an amazing night at Gion Hanamai. Luckily we were the only clients that night and had a wonderful time one to one with the Chef, who was cooking & preparing dished right in front of us. The food is very refined and tasting very good, with a beautiful presentation. They also serve sake wine in beautiful small cristal glasses that you can choose. Overall, this place is hihgly recommended if you want to experience a real authentic Kaiseki place in Kyoto with a very welcoming & passionate Chef. Thank you again!

    Delicious freshly prepared food. Attentive service. Location on a small street meant the taxi driver initially didn’t know it, but we had the hotel write the address and phone number down on paper and the driver called the restaurant and got instructions, so all was good.

    What a stunning dining experience!! My husband and I have lived in Japan for 1 year and a half, and this was one of our favorite dinners thus far. We were able to share this experience with family, which made it even more special. We had a private dinner and were sat at the counter, so we could watch our courses being prepared. The food and ingredients were all fresh and delicious, the service was impeccable, and overall it was an amazing and memorable dinner. Highly recommend!!!

    YOU MUST EAT HERE! We stumbled upon this restaurant at the last minute and we are so lucky there was a time slot available on our last night in Kyoto. We booked a counter seat but were pleasantly surprised to be seated in a private room. A menu printed in English was waiting for us and it certainly whet our appetites. Course after course was served with beautiful presentation and tasted phenomenal, and served by a very sweet lady in traditional Japanese attire. Our night was capped off with handshakes from the chef (we were the last to leave but did not feel hurried from the restaurant) and they stood at the door and waited as we walked to the end of the street at which point we turned and all bowed deeply to each other. If you are in Kyoto, you MUST eat here. We have eaten at many amazing restaurants and Michelin Star restaurants as well and this was by far one of the best meals of our lives! Arigato gozaimashita!!!!

    Wonderful meal that takes you on a lovely journey of sights, smells, textures, and tastes. The serving dishes and glasses are all locally made in Kyoto (and are a joy to admire). The chef will show you all the details of the dish he is preparing for you while the ingredients are explained to you when it is served. All of your senses are stimulated throughout the meal, and your host and hostess are very kind and welcoming. Their sake recommendations are on point as well! Their private room also looks like it would be an incredible experience. I had an allergy to an ingredient and they were more than happy to find me a substitute (which was of course delicious). If you are looking for an intimate and delicious kaiseki experience, look no further.

    As 2 dumb Americans we were at first anxious to discover we were the only guests on that quiet Tuesday night. Our chef Shigehiro was an utmost professional, and once it became clear we were nervous, he and our kind server Tomo made sure to explain and tell anecdotes about every dish, even by Google translate when necessary. They really went above and beyond, and we received a warm welcome and cultural experience that was a highlight of the trip. Shigehiro was rightfully proud of his specialty - grilling and treating meat. His Ōmi beef with sansho reduction was the finest I've had. His grilled and hot pot hamo were incredible too. He shared with us his aspirations to improve his mastery of Kyo-ryori and told us about his hometown. All in all we had such a warm experience here – despite huge language gaps – that we left grinning ear to ear. I wanted to write here to thank Tomo and Shigehiro for taking care of and welcoming 2 Americans with such open arms on a quiet, beautiful weeknight.
