Guu Otokomae - Gastown
Great izikaya. Fun atmosphere. Good sake selection
Nice place. Better suit for younger crowd. Monday cocktail special is great and cheap. $5 for 1oz alcohol, that is with a $2 off. Regular price is $7
Excellent price, taste and quality of food.
This place used to be so much better! Perhaps
It was an off night, but everything was mediocre to disappointing - especially the food and atmosphere, both of which used to be so special.
Overall, great food experience and service at Guu👍 We will come back again on our next visit😋
Fantastic izakaya — all dishes were superb and service was excellent. Don’t miss the burning custard!
As usual overall value and selection was great and does not break the bank. What was a bit dissapointing was that in the future it would be better if we were told in advance that we have to be wrapping up within 2hrs. If that was the case i would have booked maybe 30 minutes earlier so we can enjoy beverages etc as starters.
P I C K L E Y A A A Y.
Seriously though, great place and food.
Servers show no interest in serving. Oh well, too bad.
I thought we would have something a little different for a Japanese lunch and I found Guu Otokomae in Gastown. Be warned that this is not a sushi bar or teppanyaki den. Our group of three decided to be a bit adventurous and ordered: Miso Soup, Sashimi Salad, Salmon With Seven Friends, Takoyaki and the tempura meat lunch. Desert was Guuu'd Burning Custard Pudding. All dishes were quite good but the Salmon With Seven Friends was an acquired taste. This had diced wild sockeye salmon w/ natto (fermented soy beans), pickled cucumber, pickled daikon, garlic chips, crispy wonton, green onion, fresh raw egg yolk, "otokomae" made miso garlic sauce which are mixed together and spooned into the roasted seaweed wrap. Texture is a bit slimy but one of us had more than one serving! The Burning Custard Pudding was flambe’d with brandy - delish! The atmosphere was mildly energetic for a lunch crowd and the service attentive. Prices are reasonable. This was a good find!
Food was good. Service was on point. Ambiance was nice. Noise was decent, it was expected.
Food was fairly tasteless. Service at lunch was spotty, and different people got dishes 15-20 min apart
I always have an amazing time at Guu. Food is delicious, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cool.
They always have amazing food!! Love the service.
We go here as often as we can! We love it, our friends love it, our kids love it! Highly recommend.
We love the energy in the place!
Food was fantastic. Tuna sashimi was so fresh. Kobe steak was incredible. Soupless Ramen was so tasty. Service was great!
I organized a dinner for 8 academics who study Japan, including 2 elderly guests. Staff were very helpful, and location was excellent (next to SFU Vancouver Campus). All guests expressed how much they enjoyed the meal.
Been coming here since they first opened over 10 years ago. Service during my last visit was terrible. Likely not going back for a long time... too bad because the food is delicious. Many more izakayas in town with a better overall dining experience.
The food was great but poor service.
This place clearly has a shortage of staff...waited long enough to get our orders placed.
Service was fantastic. Food was good and well priced. Great atmosphere. Will definitely return to try some of the other menu items.
Great food but lunch menu is so small and mostly fried foods. Wish it had more variety.
The menu at Guu Original was better: kimchi fried rice, deep friend pumpkin with egg, oden, etc.
Interesting menu, unusual but tasty - we enjoy trying different food. They has some vegetarian options as well for those that don't like meat/seafood.
Service was outstanding. Our waitress, Tomoha (I don’t think I got the name right though :( ) was fantastic!
Enjoyed the food and the location was good. Will surely come back
I have been dining at Guu Otokomae for a few years now and I have never had a bad meal. The menu always has great new dishes to try. At my most recent reservation here I brought a friend visiting from London and he was blown away by the food. The service is always friendly and prompt, this is definitely one of my go to restaurants.
Great food, really good quality!
Overall, a good experience. My second time coming and is what I expected with the food—delicious!!
The entire restaurant was clean, except the (men’s) washroom; unless this location is going for a grunge aesthetic in there, then I take back this comment..... !!! They have mouth wash and tooth picks in the washrooms!! Second time seeing a restaurant have those lol.
Service was good. Two servers helped my date and I take/serve our orders. Though, one server ignored my date when he tried speaking Japanese to her. I guess she wasn’t Japanese or she just didn’t understand him (even though he’s from Japan)—but that is fine.
Music was way too loud. My date and I could barely hear each other.
Anyways, THANK YOU Guu Otokomae for the lovely lunch!! You gave us good seats as well :).
Music was a bit too loud, but our waitress was amazing !! We will go back for sure
Guu came highly recommended by friends as a must in Vancouver. We reserved at table for a late dinner. Our waiter was great an enthusiastically gave us recommendations when we asked what they thought was best to order. We tried many of their recommendations and it was all delicious. The noise level is higher than most restaurants but this is a bar style restaurant where the menu is for drinking and socializing.
This was a great spot. In Vancouver where high prices rule (eggs and bacon up to $15 at a "value" spot), this place is a gem. Great unique flavours, good service. Great location.
Staff was very slow to service
Server was attentive and courteous.
Great ambience and selection of food. Would recommend for small get togethers and nice casual drinks!
Took half hour to get out food. The place was loud
food was delicious, staff was friendly, we were there early so wasn't too busy...which was excellent for us. Definately worth trying. prices were very reasonable for the excellent dishes. my favorite was the deep fried brie with mango and blueberry drizzles. yummmmmy
Not Japanese authenticity, more Korean mix. Foods look great in pics, but too overly flavored. Japanese food is all about quality with simplicity. Quite disappointed. Service is good though.
Authentic perfect Japanese tapas style! Good service and love the place :)
Food was good and service quick
