Guu with Garlic
Every neighborhood deserves a gem like Guu Garlic -- the food is utterly delicious and of great value. We had the Sirloin Steak w/ garlic onion sauce, scallop mayo pizza, chicken teriyaki don, and orange cheesecake. The mains come in generous portions with choices of daily side dishes and cooked vegetables, balancing out the proteins. Our server doesn't speak English fluently but service was attentive nonetheless.
My wife and I *love* this place... We came here about once a week while we were dating, and this is the default place that we take friends who are visiting from out of town. Food is fantastic, service is great, and the atmosphere is usually lively without being too loud—you can have a conversation with your friends.
It's usually best to either make reservations or get there no later than 5:15pm on a weekend... It does get and remain busy.
Always a brilliant food experience!!
Food was not as good as it has been in the past. Came out quickly however we left feeling unsatisfied.
Food is disgusting! Didn’t go for a year, food seems so different and low quality!! Especially don’t eat sashimi, my friend and I didn’t feel well the other day.
Fun experience sitting on the ground. We ordered lots of dishes to share family style and all was very tasty.
Great food! We tried lots of random dishes on the 1st page of their menu and they all taste great!
Probably one of the worst Japanese meal in my life. Foods were badly prepared. Sashimi was not up to the quality for the price they charged. Chicken namban was over fried and super dried. They should take a higher level of measurement to redesign and double check their menu. I would recommend people to go Miku for better quality. Price is about the same with much better service and food quality in Miku.
Great service and yummy food. Would like to go again
I go here often even though it is out of the way for me. Food and customer service has always been great. Love this place!
Service was amazing! Food was amazing! Will definitely come back to try more tasty dishes
Every time we come to Vancouver THIS is one place we always eat at! We love the food, service, ambience, just everything about this place. We feel like we are back in Japan! Best Izakaya experience in Vancouver 😊
Food was just okay in my books. We enjoyed original guu much more!
As authentic Japanese Izakaya experience as it gets! Besides visiting Japan it does not get any better. The food was excellent and the service was fast.
Was very good, worth every penny. Found the meal to provide my family a perfect celebration meal for my sisters pregnancy.
Felt like I was in Japan with such traditional Nippon cuisine. Udon with beef, sashimi combo, and uni hot stove were delicious. Service levels with Japanese attendants truly made the experience authentic. Highly recommended.
Staff were friendly, courteous, and efficient. Food generally tasted good; we found it a bit too heavily flavored even with rice. Price was reasonable.
food is fairly good, portion is small, more of a drinking place, good service.
We are from out of town and our good friend who is from Vancouver told us that this is a place that we shouldn't miss. I made the reservation and it was very easy. Arrives on time and immediately, we were seated. Service was great. We orders the most popular, like the yaki udon, scallop mayo pizza, sashimi, tuna tataki, steamed mussels in sake and garlic butter...etc. The taste was so good that it was like we are in Japan. Even my super picky son claimed that the place reminded him when he visited Japan last summer. We highly recommended and definitely make a reservation.
Daughter loved the "carbonara" with roe.
Foods are good! Services very fast.
The restaurant had no heads up confirmation of seating limit which I was celebrating my birthday and felt rushed with no birthday dessert or anything as a greeting. Kind of disappointed!
Incredible, cannot wait to go back! My group was 6 people, had amazing service, and my friend at the table was Vegan and they had no issues slightly modifying dishes for her. Every plate was so delicious, and the value was unreal!
Always great Japanese tapas (would you call it Jappas?)
Came here for my dad's birthday, everything was good except the miso pork ribs which was very bland.
Second time visiting Vancouver. Second time at Guu with Garlic.
Love this place.
Super fun place. Their seafood had clean after taste. Every dish was so flavorful and tasty.
We felt like we were back home in Japan! True Izakaya experience:)
Celebrated friend’s birthday, it was great!
Food was really good, a lot of dishes to choose from.
Guu with Garlic is an amazing izakaya experience. The menu is creative and authentic. The staff are friendly and energetic. This is a fantastic spot to take adventurous eaters.
Been here before several times. I love for the salmon carpaccio!
I have been dining at Guu for many many years. While I still love the place, the food quality and taste aren't as good as it used to be. Somehow, they started putting more (hot) spices into their food and put less emphasis on bringing the original flavors of the food itself. Isn't garlic your theme? I can't taste garlic as much in your food. The menu gets pricier over time, and if I am willing to pay for this price I have more options to choose from. I still like the place, but I don't go as often as I used to be now.
Waiters seemed just want to get business done as soon as possible.
Totally not feeling the hospitality of Japanese manner.
Food was fine but the portion is not worth the price.
It was sons birthday. Overall loved the food, and atmosphere. Overall was a great experience.
Very courteous staff, unfortunately they forgot about our orders midway and we had to remind them. Weird, considering that the table (they were seated after us) beside us was receiving the same food one after the other. I’ve been to Guu before and didn’t experience this before. Great food though!
Serving foods quickly
My family and I really enjoyed the food, it was tasty, creative & different. We had a reservation right when they opened at 5:30 and were seated promptly and also noticed all the tables had reserved signs on them so if you want a table make sure you reserve ahead of time. It became very busy and quite loud but we still had a good time as it was a very lively crowd and servers were buzzing around and although they were busy, service was always with a smile. I would recommend this place if you're looking to try non-conventional Japanese cuisine.
We loved it! Everything about it!
Food was fantastic. Only regret was missing the front page menu items with more adventurous dishes. Won't make that mistake next time.
Small portion size and they couldn’t split the bill which was odd
