Gyu-Kaku - Oakland
Service was a little disorganized and the flame wasn't hot enough, probably due to the inexperienced server. Prices were up a little bit since we were last here three+ months ago, but still a good value for your dollar and lots of meat.
An OK meal, nothing special. Meats came out before we were done with the appetizers; an avalanche of plates. Service was perfunctory.
Server was nice but he was like gone all the time lol could not find someone to replace grill, or get the check….but overall pretty good
I'm really excited about this restaurant being in my neighborhood. The food is creative, delicious, and a fun cost. The menu is very affordable in my opinion and good for groups. We had some service trouble - delays, a wrong order, and confusion about cost - but they were very attentive and comped us on our check. I will definitely come back soon.
Portions were smaller than normal, Danae (our server) ignored us, messed up our order, kitchen staff were slow to send food out. Temperatures were NOT taken, even though there was a sign that said that they would take temperatures, I saw staff without their masks on. The food tasted good, but everything else made the experience not worth repeating.
So sad. Seems Covid has really done a number on this location. In the past, I would have given them 5 stars all around. But this past visit was beyond lacking. Walking in, you could feel the sticky floors on your shoes. The service was super slow. Ordered a hot tea for grandma and her tea did not come til after all our drinks arrived. Reason was they tea machine was still making tea. Then as we waited for our food. They forgot to give us our miso soup. As the meal progressed and they had to change our grill, they took the dirty grill away. But then we had to wait for a new one, since there weren't any clean grills to replace the dirty one. Meaning we had raw meat sitting at our table while we waited for a new grill to be cleaned. Then as the meal ended, we realized we were missing an item. Along with the fact, it took forever to get our smores dessert. I do have to say, the manager did try to rectify by giving us a discount for the problems that occurred. I do feel for them, since he said all his workers were new and still learning the ropes. Sad to say that it's not like it should be. Yes, workers may be new, but it's up to the management to keep on top of things. Making sure new workers don't linger around doing nothing and making sure the establishment is covid super clean. There is no reason for sticky floors.
It was just horror and disappointment. I’ve been in different locations in LA area and northern California, even worked at Gyu-kaku Sherman Oaks for a short time and I was so surprised the quality of service here was so poor. May be poor training programs? I can go on to the details but not sure worth my time. Anyhow, it just shows the management here is very, very weak... To bad.
Celebrating home ownership
This was my 2nd visit and I learned to sit sideways, made everything better with my legs, but a bit awkward. Host person told me ALL the tables were the same, NOT made for tall people. Had the Prime Kalbi and Shrimp Garlic Noodles with extra Shrimp, and the Nigori Sake for desert. Ivy was very knowledgeable about the menu, explained a lot of stuff for my next visit.
Best place to eat in Oakland. Second time in a week my mother and I dined here. Server dude Kai took care of us every well. Happy Hour prices are deals. Sadly a large visiting family from out of state was dining across the aisle and both of their rental SUVs parked directly across from Gyu-Kaku on 8th Street were smashed/grabbed all their possessions/cash while they were eating. So please secure all your belongings if you do drive to Gyu-Kaku because unfortunately it is still OAKLAND……
Four of us thoroughly enjoyed a happy hour feast and beef loving party. Very reasonable and great service by Micheala. Guy-Kaku in Oakland Is the place to hangout with friends and family for this Alamedan!!
This has become one of my favorite Korean BBQ spots in the Bay! All the cuts of meats were very flavorful and well marinated. The server gave us the times on how long to cook the meats for and was very nice and accommodating. The small plates we tried were so good! Tuna Poke Nachos, the corn cheese, and believe it or not, the garlic shio cabbage! Everything we had there was really good and we can't wait to go back and try more!
The best part is that there are also options for courses. My friend and I chose the meat lovers course and it was so filling!
Service and food was great! Seated right away. Parking available on the street along with a $10 parking lot across the street.
The only thing I did not like were the floor under my side of the table hadn’t been cleaned so my shoes were sticky after leaving.
T'was my first visit and if you LOVE Garlic you should try this place. Started with the Shrimp Garlic Noodles and Garlic Rice Bibimbap (garlic Heaven). Cooked the Kobe Style Kalbi Shortrib meat, with Hot Sake. Nick was my server and you could tell he was new, but willing. The only Major problem was... I am 74 inches tall with a size 13 foot and the table setup left me with my right leg folded cause there is NO room under the table.
It was awesome! We are adding this to our weekly date night rotation, first time there and it wasn’t disappointing. The meats and marinades are delicious, it’s definitely a good value at $90 for 2 people.
terrible service..staff should be better trained.
It was great, food was great, super flavorful. My new favorite go to spot.
Second time here and its a great little spot for Japanese BBQ. Good experience, service was great, food came out quick but just wished there was more portion of each meat. Always ate at the san mateo location but still good experience.
Service was slow and a few of our orders were forgotten. When there were less customers, our server was able to check in on us more, but the kitchen was still very slow. We ended up leaving without some of the food we ordered because we needed to leave. All of the food that we did eat were delicious though.
The meat wasn’t as good as the ones we had in Honolulu.
Nelly, our favorite server, took care of us on her last day at Gyu-Kaku…….everything was fantastic as usual, but she will be missed!! Gyu-Kaku is my joint to unwind and entertain and enjoy Japanese beer and sakes. Great deals during Happy Hour too!!
Decided to take a friend for his birthday and first experience: MAJOR FAIL!! Our waiter seemed to not want to service our table which resulted in other waiters taking care of our needs. We watched people who were seated after us receive their food and get excellent service. Tonight also the alcoholic drinks were terrible, the pot stickers were overcooked and our meats weren’t cut too well. We didn’t receive many items we ordered. We visit the restaurant frequently and this was the worst. I could tell my friend was disappointed. This birthday dinner was a major fail. Let me not forget when we told the manager, he listened and simply walked away. Calvin, the waiter was a Godsend because he stepped in and took care of us.
Dined at Gyu-Kaku again with my 97 year old Japanese mom. Really love this place!! Feel very safe to bring her here during Covid. Downtown Oakland location is convenient to Alameda and plenty of street parking in the late afternoon. Before 5, it’s Happy Hour!! The $60 HH course for two is plenty filling plus sake and beer are also discounted……can’t ask for more than that these days!! And service is consistently outstanding, last night youngsters Jonathan and Nelly took care of us like veteran professionals. Hats off to the back of the house, as a veteran yakiniku fan, all the meat cuts and marination were of superb quality and taste. Already made my next Gyu-Kaku reservation!!!
Nice and clean ambience. Weeknight 7:30 pm reservation. Not busy night. We were seated at our table immediately. Since my son has been to other locations so he knew what to order. We got our foods within 20 minutes of arrival. We missed 3 dishes, told the waitress, she said all dishes have been out. Luckily, all the emptied plates were still at our table. She went to double check. A man came (? Supervisor?) He said, The kitchen staff made a mistake our dishes are coming right out, and it did. We think our dishes got sent to the wrong table (because they tried to send other table dishes to our table when we first got in). Food overall were very fresh. Gave only 4 stars because everything’s were too sweet for our taste; from the cocktails to the marinated meat to the dipping sauce, but our teenager boy loves it. We would come back with our son.
My favorites: cucumber, chicken garlic rice & noodle, hanger steak beef, fatty Nora beef, and thin sliced tongue
No: cabbage salad, some marinated meats
The food here is always amazing. The service was definitely better during my first visit however. Smooth reservation and seating process. The restaurant wasn’t too crowded but we had a longer than usual wait. They were all out of an appetizer and drink i ordered but they did accommodate a substitution for us on the menu which we appreciated. Once they started bringing out the food though, it took them a while to realize they didn’t bring out the remainder of our order. My guess is our original server was on break or finished for the day. After we got the remainder of our meats, nobody checked in or offered us water refills. We had to remind them for our dessert course after we got the check.
All in all the food was amazing, the harami steak in the pot was our favorite! The brisket and galbi were on point! Will come back but I hope the communication between staff is better next time.
Four of us…….Seriously enjoyed a great Happy Hour dinner Friday evening. We ordered the Yakiniku Course for four and drank a pitcher of Sapporo, a Large Hot Sake, and a bottle of Pinot Noir, all at HH prices. Our server Micheala was still a trainee but she she sure didn’t show it and really took care us very well. Added some Beef Tongue and Prime Kalbi and we walked out stuffed. Gyu-Kaku is a fantastic joint to get together with family and friends. Very convenient downtown Oakland location if you live in the East Bay. And the youthful and energetic staff always seem motivated and upbeat. Can’t go wrong with that!
The food was simply wonderful.
This is our new favorite spot now.
Great food and dining experience. Will recommend to friends
Excellent service and ambience. Really enjoyed the dine in experience. Unfortunately I wasn’t that great at cooking the meat, though no fault of the restaurant
Just the two of us on a Happy Hour Friday!! What a feast you get for the set course for two….only $60!! Plus a pitcher of ice cold Sapporo and a Jumbo Hot Sake. Added the beef tongue with green onions and nappa Kimchee to complete a fun night. Nelly, our charming sever, was very impressive and professional…..all the meats she brought us were superb in quality.. I really like this joint, lot of youth and energy working as a team in the right direction. And a highly convenient downtown OAKLAND location for Uber drop off and pick up. Can’t go wrong with Gyu-Kaku, strongly recommend from a meat-eater that’s dined at hundreds of yakiniku table BBQ during his lifetime!!
We always enjoy the Chef's Favorite fixed-price menu. Lots of meat and interesting salads. The lichee sakatini drinks are always a treat. Service is earnest, but sometimes things are forgotten, which is understandable with so many moving parts. For example, the server forgot to fire up our grill and to bring the salad that accompanies one of the beef dishes.
Had a reservation but it took about 15 minutes to be seated. Very noisy. Might be good for groups, but not date night.
Really good restaurant! Too crowded for a post-COVID ambiance but the service was great. Could improve the cleaning department but overall, an enjoyable experience. Would come back.
The meat lover set is good for people that are new to Gyukaku as you can try varies meat and dishes for a decent price. Overall, the meat was decent and a little too salty for our taste. The quality of the meat was not that good. I would like to try other appetizers next time I come.
Rice was uncooked. Meat quality poor. Just overall pretty bad experience compared to the other Gyu Gakus in the area
Great food and service
I’ve dined at many, many Gyu-Kaku’s, most recently the Honolulu Waikiki store . This new joint is an outstanding addition to the Oakland downtown area. Three of us shared the Ninja course priced at $110. It’s a good deal and pretty much everything is included yakiniku wise except for Kimchee and beef tongue which we ordered separately. A bottle of Hatsumago junmai cold sake matched the various cuts of premium meats, mostly beef, brought to our table by Keviin AKA Kai which we then grilled ourselves right on the table. What a fantastic concept !! I must stay Kevin was on his A game…..everything came out on schedule at the right time even though it was a busy Father’s Day dinner. Great food, great service, great location!! Gyu-Kaku Oakland is a winner for family and friends who want to get together after the long lockdown.
Service was quite slow at our visit, but we could tell they were understaffed and the servers that were there were working very hard. Food was good- think more waitstaff are needed though!
The hostess and waitresses were super sweet! The food also came out at a great pace and everything was delicious!
I didn’t know that if I late 15 mins you guys would cancel my reservation and no one let me know this earlier.
