Il Fornaio - Carmel
The food was very good but we were disappointed with the service. We felt rushed even though there weren't people waiting to be seated. The salad course was served five minutes after our cocktails were served. We hadn't finished our salads before the entree was placed on the table. We won't be going back.
We have always enjoyed Il Fornaio for years and even though this virus has changed things it hasn't changed the warm and hospitable staff who serves its customers.
Excellent overall. Short ribs were a little fatty but excellent meal.
Il Fornaio is consistently good. Everyone is very friendly and courteous. The food and service are always outstanding.

My friends and I went for dinner. Their response with covid precautions was outstanding. All the staff wore masks and we were seated very far from others which was great. All of us ordered pasta. I myself had their pasta with vodka sauce. I did ask for peas to be added which they happily accommodated. By far the best vodka pasta I’ve had in the U.S. it was phenomenal. My friends also enjoyed their pasta and our wine was a generous glass full. Highly recommend though a little pricey it was right in the range of almost every restaurant in town.
Loved the patio room with the beautiful flowers out the window. The food and wine were fabulous!! Will come again!
It's all good all the time! We look forward to dinner and Happy Hour every time we go.
Excellently prepared and plated, fairly traditional Italian cuisine. Everything was fresh and tasty. Decent size portions. Dessert(custard and gelato fruit parfait) was light and refreshing.
We enjoyed our dinner very much. Every attention was made to detail and the service was excellent. Our food was outstanding.
Waited One and one half hour to get cold food and restaurant was not crowded at all????
Carlos is a great waiter. Attends to every need and has a great attitude.
Service was terrible! People who came in after us, were served well before us. We had to ask for our salads twice, before they were brought. My meal was tasteless, I should have sent it back. Very disappointed!
Chicken dish was over-cooked and the sauce made the taste even worse. Waiter seemed to care less and service was horrible.

Always great food - had a take out order last night and it was just as good as being there!
A perfect 5 out of 5 dinner. The only negative was the extremely uninterested gentlemen that checked us in on our arrival. Other then that, top notch!

When we head to Carmel for a weekend we usually dine here. The staff is friendly, good service and consistently delicious! The Gnocci the night we went was awesome!
Went here for Carmel Restaurant Week and ended up leaving very dissatisfied. The restaurant appears neglected and the service was on par with ordering at a self-serve kiosk in a fast food chain. Food was mediocre at best.
Best Italian food in Carmel Always have great meal / service
The service was great and really enjoyed the ambiance but the food itself was really disappointing. Presentation wasn’t horrible but it just tasted very poor.
Il Fornaio Carmel is one of my favorite restaurants - I've been there many times usually with mt bridge friends at the Monterey Regional bridge tournament. My friends the Fosters, who have a second home in Carmel also love this restaurant.
I also like several other Il Fornaio's, in Palo Alto and Burlingame, also Rocklin (or Roseville) where my daughter lives.
We had a weekend in Carmel and so happy we chose to come here . It is a beautiful resturant with amazing stafff! And of course the food was delicious!
As always, delicious authentic Italian Cuisine, super & friendly service from the reception to servicing the meal. Great environment for any occasion. Love Il Fornaio, our favorite restaurant. I always recommend it for friends and family with gusto!
Starting to lose their touch. The cost is no longer justifying the experience.
Great ambiance, friendly vibe, beautiful space and lovely service but the food was pretty lousy. Low quality, high volume fare. Bruschetta was cold, mealy, under-seasoned tomatoes. If tomatoes are out of season or sub-standard then they shouldn’t be on the menu. Pasta dishes were very mediocre.
We loved this restaurant so much we ate there both nights that we were in Carmel. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of other good restaurants to choose from, but for us the experience, service and the food was so good we just wanted more.
Waited almost an hour after our confirmed booking time for our table - when we asked about our table we were told that it “was not our fault” and it was no big deal because what did we expect on a Saturday night - a little humility and remorse would go a long way. The food was really good however and once seated service was good
The restaurant allows itself to over book badly.
We arrived at 6:55 for a 7:00 reservation.
We were told we would be seated in “just a couple minutes”.
At 7:30 upon insisting to know where we were; we were told there were still three parties waiting to be seated in front of us and that it could be 20-30 more minutes
We discussed with the manager and left.
This reflects badly on Il Fornaio but it also reflects badly on OPEN TABLE.
Open Table has a responsibility to ensure restaurants don’t badly over book.
Shame on Open Table for allowing this to happen.
It was parents 50th anniversary. I included this info in the reservation and informed the hostess at the restaurant upon our arrival. Didn’t make one bit of difference. Our waiter was a gem, but the food was mediocre and the overall experience forgettable. Mostly annoyed the hostess managed to just ignore anything I said and did nothing to make the evening special.
Had the lobster special and it was great. Special included a nice beet salad (or soup if you prefer) and dessert (chose spumoni but affogato was also available). Service was very attentive (lots of water refills). Carneros brut was reasonably priced.
WE went there for dinner on Christmas day. I think it was a long stretch for the kitchen staff, waiters and we ended up with the short end of the stick. We had to send our starters back as they were cold. The presentation of the food was poor. My wife had Caprese which arrived with chunks of cheese and thickly sliced tomato and no seasoning. I had the Vodka seasoned pasta dish which was just acceptable but nothing to talk about.
Needless to say, we did not take a chance with dessert.
We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service was great. What more could you ask??
We had a very nice evening on a very busy Christmas Eve holiday.
