Italy on Gilman
Good food. Nice outdoor seating. Good for a date or with family and friends.
A little pricey but worth it. The food is always delicious. Glasses of wine everywhere are expensive but theirs is a bit over the top. Love the place, though!
I've now eaten here numerous times. It's my go-to place for dinner with friends. The food is uniformly delicious, the service good, and a pleasant ambiance. Who could ask for more?
So good! From the service to the food. Definitely returning!
Fantastic place for lunch
Cute hidden restaurant in Berkeley. It's way bigger in the inside and offers patio + open door seating which is great for this kind of dining times. Food was yummy and service was great too.
choice to eat inside or out, tasty food and great service
Very nice staff. Cheerful and welcoming.
Italy on Gilman is a great restaurant. My son lives in the area and we went for a later dinner. We were welcomed and the restaurant smelled fantastic. Our server was prompt and very informed. We orders mussels as an appie and they were cooked perfectly and the sauce was delightful. I had linguini with clam sauce and were also great. My son had the tortellini and the peas were crunchy, but not hard, cooked perfectly and the sauce was perfect too.
I wish I lived closer, as this would be my go-to restaurant. The ambiance is also light, bright and airy! I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone!
Conventional but not routine Italian dishes with a flair. Artfully done and delicious. In normal times my ratings would most likely be higher for service. I suspect there was a shortage of wait staff as there were a lot of delays in ordering as well as arrival of bar drinks. And the outdoor seating option didn't help. On the positive side the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Quite tasty Italian, easy access of college football game day
Every aspect of Gilman was perfect and I will definitely return
Second visit, had the Brown Butter Gnocchi again (still very good) and the Linguini with Alfredo Sauce and Prawns followed by Raspberry Sorbetto and Tito's. Will be back for the Risotto Al Tartufo Di Funghi.
Such delicious food that was plated in a visually appealing style. We had two appetizers, a basket of bread, 4 pasta dishes & 2 desserts. I/we would be hard pressed to say which was the best as they all were worth having again . . . and again!
Our server was delightful & with just the right balance of being there when we first looked for him & when to let us take our time! It is a balancing act for most servers, but ours did it with great ease!
I most definitely recommend dining at Italy; and we will do it again very soon.
Thank you Italy!
Great service. Good food. Very enjoyable.
All the entrees I’ve had so far are solid. However, the mussels appetizer is really great. They’re apparently sourced from Island River, British Columbia, and are among the best I’ve had in a long very time - fresh, plump, soft, and tasty. I’m hoping the quality stays the high.
Very nice interior. Sat on the second floor and it was very spacious and comfortable. food was very good also.
For Italian cuisine prepared properly go to Italy on Gillman. This is the type of Italian restaurant where the menu will have no surprise offerings from little Italian villages. This menu serves American-Italian classics offered by most Italian restaurants in the United States. What sets this restaurant apart from its competitors is its food preparation. This was my fourth visit and the fourth time that I received perfectly cooked and seasoned food. The bruschetta is excellent. The tomato, garlic, and basil is served atop lightly toasted bread so that you can achieve a clean bite without all the toppings falling off because the bread shattered beneath. It is this attention to detail that many Italian restaurants ignore. The chicken marsala was tender thin slices of chicken breast sautéed in a sauce where you can taste the marsala wine. I can’t tell you how many Italian restaurants where the marsala flavor is lost. The Budino di Pane (spelled on the menu as “Budino De Pane”) is an excellent version of classic Italian bread pudding. The bread was not soaked too long in milk which allowed it to retain its firmness when mixed with egg, sugar, and vanilla before baking. It was served warm with a swirl of fresh mascarpone cream, caramel sauce, and candied walnuts. It’s delicious. On a previous visit, a month ago, I tried their gem salad which had a nicely balanced dressing, not too sweet or acidic, with fresh fruit and cheese that whets the appetite. On this third trip, I also tried their penne with pesto sauce, and I must say they have a mouthwatering pesto recipe—fresh, full of garlic-flavor, and vibrant green. On my second visit, I tried their bistecca which is a grilled rib-eye steak and this was solid. However, on your first visit, I would recommend as a secondi their chicken or fish. On my third visit, my friend ordered the salmon alla griglia and allowed me to try it. The salmon was fresh, cooked to a perfect temperature, and melted in the mouth. Great restaurant.
Our Bridal dinner was delicious! The staff was great and accommodating. We would definitely recommend to friends and visit them again!
T'was my first visit, we started off with 2 Anejo Affumicata cause it looked like a interesting drink (not to our taste, I had to drink both) and Michelle got wine. We split the La Grotta Salad and she got the Linguini Vongole. She said it was good but her personal choice would have had more cream. I loved the way you build you own pasta choices, I had Angel hair with Mushrooms, Prawns and Alfredo Sauce. I picked this Italian place because I had a taste for Gnocchi and theirs was DEVINE. JoseLuis was our server and again you could tell he was new, but working hard.
Well prepared and fresh, Italian pastas and meat dishes. Extensive menu - something for everyone. Atmosphere is light, airy, roomy and comfortable. Outdoor seating available for nice warm days but on this day everyone was indoors due to the weather. Fortunately tables are not crowded to allow for some social distancing.
This is a find for these Delta days … airy and open and quiet with excellent food —-and a fine view of the parking lot!
Always dependable for excellent food and service . A favorite
Very slow service and many “mistakes’
Unfortunately very cold with a breeze going through the restaurant where we were sitting
Great experience overall, excellent food and a nice atmosphere.
It was my first time eating here and everything was great including the atmosphere, service, food and parking. We will definitely be back!!
We went there the last night of our visit to Berkeley and wished we had found it earlier during our stay so we could have eaten there more! Everything was fabulous and we look forward to eating there again.
Nice ambience, and the view of the parking lot is I suppose better than being on the other side with a view of Gilman. Friendly service. Food better than decent, although the lasagna I had was way soft and mushy; overbaked or rebaked too many times? On the expensive side for what you get, and not very stylishly plated or originally conceived (there may be house specials that are more innovative than what we ordered). I think we'd go back just to hang out in the space and have a decent meal.
I've had three meals here and I couldn't ask for better Italian food or service. I'm becoming a regular customer.
The food is yummy and the service is excellent. They are doing their very best to provide an old school restaurant experience with good service. That is hard to do right now with supply chain limitations and staffing challenges. We should definitely support this place!
Never eat here. The food was perfectly mediocre and tremendously overpriced. I had the sense while eating that nothing has actually been prepared either that day or in house. The pasta carbonara sauce tasted frozen and bore absolutely no relationship to carbonara. I was told that only the gnocchi and lasagna were made in the house and all of the other pastas came from a box.
I ordered the Insalata Del Grotto and it had clearly been sitting pre-prepared in the refrigerator for sometime. As I was eating it, I bit down on something crunchy. Thinking it was a small stone, I immediately dismissed it. However, upon further examination I saw the culprit: A chip of pottery from the serving dish. When I called this to the attention of our waiter, he said “oh yeah I noticed that too.“ No apology, no acknowledgment that the piece of pottery had no place in a salad.
The truffle fries had very little truffle flavor. To my way of thinking, fries should have a bit of crunch and crispiness to them and be served hot. These fries were limp and cold.
Our bill came to over 100$ for a salad, pasta, meatball, fries, and 3 beer meal.
I would not recommend this place.
The management was very accommodating in meeting our seating requests. Service was excellent and food was delicious. We highly recommend!
Super delicious. Nuf said.
This is a great Italian restaurant. The Lobster Ravioli was wonderful. The staff is very nice and helpful. We will be back soon.
The restaurant has a very varied menu, including lots of items for vegetarians and fish eaters. Prices are reasonable. The food was good, but not great enough to elevate to five starts. Service was outstanding.
I had an excellent meal at a reasonable price. Bruschetta, scampi, and bread pudding with an Italian white wine and cappuccino came to $77 with tax and tip. The service was quick, friendly and efficient. This is a new business at this location and they seem to have things under control already. I hope to visit again soon.
Food and service were excellent. Calamari, penne alla vodka, linguini pescatore, and bread pudding were all thumbs up.
Very well designed restaurant the staff was extremely nice although there are many people in noise level was OK may be a little loud but the open kitchen is quite interesting and the food divine
We had a date night out for the first time in over a year and enjoyed our dinner at Italy on Gilman very much. Super friendly and attentive staff, good food and drink. We definitely had a great time.
Delicious food, but dining experience diminished by slooow service and views of Walgreens trash area and parking lot. Most staff very friendly and helpful. Waiter seemed overwhelmed. English skills seemed to come and go.
