Judith is a new American tavern pairing warm hospitality and the cooking of James Beard Nominated Chef Julia Sullivan (Henrietta Red in Nashville) located in the quiet area of Sewanee, TN near the University of the South. The name is an homage to Judith Ward Lineback, the first woman to matriculate into the University in 1969.

As Sullivan’s first solo project, Judith will feature a seasonal menu of creative and approachable dishes including a selection of small, shareable plates perfect for the bar crowd. The beverage program mirrors the food with accessible wines and a cocktail list created by Henrietta Red's Beverage Manager Patrick Halloran.

The warehouse-style building, previously the Old Steam Laundry which serviced the University since the 1950’s, has additional space for private dining and parties. With the goal of becoming a meeting place for students, faculty, tourists and the Sewanee community alike, the restaurant will be open for dinner from Thursday - Monday.

My husband and I started with 2 appetizer’s, the raw oysters and the sourdough with mushrooms which were fabulous! We both had the steak and it was cooked perfectly & was absolutely delicious! Our meal at Judith was one that did not disappoint! From the atmosphere, service, phenomenal food and even met one of the nicest couples ever who were seated at the table next to us! Hands down one of the best meals we’ve ever had!

Dined at Judith on a Girl’s trip. All agreed it was one of the best meals they had ever had. Can’t wait to go back!

Judith was a great experience! The food was very good, wine was amazing. Noise level is loud on a Saturday night and the tables for two are pretty tight with a very small table. Although we really enjoyed talking with the tables on either side of us! You order all food at once and there is no deviation from the way the chef makes it (filet is served medium rare, no exceptions). All in all, a wonderful experience!

Disappointed. It took 50 minutes to receive 6 raw oysters. Another 15 minutes to receive our salads, one which was supposed to be endive but was 90% romaine and 10% endive, and the other which was supposed to have à tahini dressing; it tasted like it had a lemon squeezed on top. My small trout was served hot after waiting another 15-20 minutes, was cooked well and flaky, but was bland with two tiny baby new potatoes sliced underneath as the accompaniment. My husband’s medium rare steak was cold and over-cooked. The wine by the glass list was not extensive, which is ok, but the ones offered were of low quality. All in all the service was lacking and slow and the food was subpar. I have eaten at Henrietta Red. This one does not come close, so I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Judith was outstanding, as always. I took two out-of-town guests who both said it was the best meal they had enjoyed in quite a while. The duck and the tavern steak were standouts, for sure!

A Very relaxed atmosphere and quiet for talking with people at your table. We were greeted promptly and seated. Service was excellent. All of the food our table ordered was delicious - the appetizers, steak, chicken, duck and pasta were very good. Hope to come back when visiting Sewanee in the spring.
